This is my original recipe and you definitely dont want to use that much of the marble dust if youre using less glue... the reason being is, if you use too much marble dust, when you put the clear gesso on your projects, it will leave a film. I use black paper or cardstock as my test to make sure i didnt add too much of the marble dust when I was experimenting because on black you can see the film and i wanted to be sure the paper still looked black once it dried on it.... and I found that with one cup of glue, you dont want to use more than 3 to 4 heaping tablespoons and most times 3 is plenty. :) I hope you like the recipe :)

Your recipe? Seeing as how I started making my own back in the early 1980s I somehow doubt you invented it. And I can assure you I was far from the first to do so. It so annoys me that folk claim as their own so many things that have been used for many decades. In the 70s I made my own spacecraft from leftover Airfix model kits, even customizing my scalextrix slot cars too. Most of my mates did stuff like that back then, yet now "Kitbashing" is a new thing? We made model dioramas too. My dad made one for our toy dinosaurs to play with and store on my shelves in the bedroom, but "Booknooks" are new? And since the beginning of time artists have made their own paints with their own recipes as modern art supply stores have only been around since after WW2. glue, powdered Marble, Talcum or Baby Powder, or even crack filler powder, Flour, even Gum Arabic and raw Eggs, all been used to make the most common of art supplies, texture paint, gesso, glues, modelling pastes and even the pasints used by the original old masters all homemade since art began. Discovering things for yourself is not invention, and to claim so is rediculous.

I wanted to share that most counties have a hazardous waste station for people to take their old paint, stains, varnish, polyurethane, primers, cleaning supplies, pool cleaners, car fluids,wall paper remover,paint thinners, grout, drywall repair paste, everything you need for dozens of DIY projects. And here's the best part... It'a all free! In my city /county you can get up to 10 items every 30 @t do have to show your ID so don't forget that. And my hazardous waste station allows 10 items per car load. So if I go with my friend , that's 10 items for both of us. Not ten each! So go by yourself or take separate cars. Just an FYI! I haven't paid for paint, mineral spirits, car oil ,most of my cleaning supplies, or pool shock for 6 years. And you all know that you can take white paint to the place you bought it( sherwin williams,Lowes, walmart etc..) and they will mix and make your desired color for you. Usually for free. Find out if there's a hazardous waste station near you. It will save you hundreds of dollars in your crafting products . Have a blessed day!

You halved the water and glue but you didn't halve the powdered marble. Was this a mistake? Obviously it still worked all right, but it did start out very thick, you said.

Great Tutorial on how to make clear Gesso! Thanks for sharing. Also, I have another question... May I ask how you set up your camera and lighting for recording your videos? It's nice that you have the option to zoom in and out, so it would seem that your camera is handy... but how do you get it where it isn't in your way? :)
@mytherapyroom
@mytherapyroom 8 лет назад
My camera is on a tripod right in front of me. It sits sort of right at the top of my craft mat. The part of the tripod that attached to the camera, has a crank on it that
@mytherapyroom
@mytherapyroom 8 лет назад
Sorry, hit enter too soon...Lol. Anyway, the crank simply elevates the camera higher without having to extend the legs out further therefore allowing the legs to stay out of the video frame and allows me to use the whole craft mat without interference. As for lighting, I simply use two Ott lights I picked up at Costco and they sit on either side of the tripod. This set up allows me to have the whole craft mat to work on and then I can simply reach straight up and use my cameras zoom feature very easily. Thank you!!

Having painted more fine art painting than crafting, I've used regular white gesso for years to cover and prep surfaces, but what do you need with clear gesso? It seems like just using mod podge would do anything you needed clear for. What applications is it good for?
@mytherapyroom
@mytherapyroom 4 года назад
wuznotbornyesterda it keeps the working surface visible. It provides great youth for pastels, graphite and charcoal. It’s great for use on shutting you wish to still be able to see parts or portions of your substrate through. 👍🏻

@mytherapyroom
@mytherapyroom 7 лет назад
Chris Hales thank you! And I'm not sure of it would make into a gel or not! 👍☺
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 6 лет назад
no, this wont make a gel medium as marble dust has no binding properties, its just an additive to add tooth to the gesso. However, you can glue with this if youre paper collaging but I know some gel mediums are stronger than white glue and since that is all that is in this recipe, it wont be as strong as gel medium :)

Do you think this recipe will work for priming a canvas? In terms of getting an adequate “tooth” on the canvas?

Thanks for the recipe! I have used calcium carbonate powder, however it seems to be such a fine powder that my gesso has no “tooth” to it whatsoever… Should my powder be more coarse, or is that typical of calcium carbonate? Many thanks, Amy 🙂

Amy Stanyon you’re welcome, but I’m not 100% sure if the powder maybe comes in different grades of grit. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I know mine ended up having lots of tooth to it.

Cynthia, in a previous comment she said not if you want clear gesso. So I guess the marble stuff will produce clear and baby powder or baking soda will produce white gesso. I made white gesso with baking soda, school glue and water.

Pva glue does dissolve in water after drying, so surely this isn't a stable base...gesso is acrylic polimer based, which is stable after drying..
@ellydavis2066
@ellydavis2066 5 лет назад
Would you recommend any other type of glue in its place? I've only just started to experiment making my own pastes but haven't attempted a clear yet.
@mmoorecaterer2cats458
@mmoorecaterer2cats458 4 года назад
Mr Teacup actually Gesso is the Italian name for gypsum. And the PVA will dilute in water but not dissolve; so actually it is more stable. The original glue used in the 16. century has been bone glue. There some texts with the old recipes floating around. The advantage of gypsum was and is you can polish it with sanding paper and such to create a glossy surface.. But for that wall or wood might be a more underground.

drika rezende isn‘t chemistry great? While pva is liquid, it will mix to some extent in water. After drying, the pva will remain unsoluble and stable.

Jane Smith any time you need to ‘prep’ a surface in order for paint to adhere. Much like you prime a wall in your house before you paint, it gives whatever surface you’re going to add paint to some ‘tooth’ for the paint to adhere to. I hope that makes sense!

Calcium carbonate is one of the most commonly used ingredients for chalk paint. Plaster of Paris is good, but can turn solid, due to the fact that it is plaster.... so only mix enough for whatever project you are currently working on.

Hi I've just started to watch many art videos on RU-vid. Thank you for taking the time to pass on information to others. But I am amazed at how many people don't give proper kudos to where they get the original ideas from to pass on. There is so much plagiarism going on in the craft industry! When we start at University the first thing we are taught is to never take another persons AI (Artistic Intelligence) or make out that the ideas are our own, and to always do research and reference where the ideas came from (no matter how old or obscure) to the best of our knowledge. You did mention that you found this recipe but did not say where or from whom? If you know where you got the information from, it is morally correct to advise the makers name or at least put a link to their site or book. Cheers
