A quick way to find the center of your staff, rest your staff on 1 finger of each hand, and slowly bring them together. The staff will automatically balance itself till your fingers are touching then just mark the spot between your two fingers.

I feel you're probably one of the greatest lightsaber stunt individuals I've ever seen in my life ever. I used to do a few tricks you know spin it stuff like that but unfortunately my life changed when I was hit at 125 mph back on December 31st 2019 where I became permanently disabled so my lightsaber spinning days are kind of over. I had both my legs broken both my kneecaps, cracked my collarbone, broke my nose, shattered my left arm completely got a concussion I die twice in the operating table and was in a coma for a week What's even worse than that was from 2012 to 2018 my entire family passed away my mom had a stroke on Christmas 2012 and died January 27th 2013 so my mom got me in a Star wars and when I watch your videos I am just blown away by what you can do with these items I mean I know you've been doing it for over 30 years and it shows but you are probably the greatest lightsaber stunt woman stunt person I have ever seen in my life you make anybody from the Star wars films look like an amateur I don't know why you're not in the Star wars movies maybe you are I don't know but you should be in the ones from Disney because you would knock it out of the park without a question I mean you basically are a special effect I mean what you can do with these things is just it's almost unearthly so I just wanted to share my opinion of this and my thoughts and thank you for uploading the videos you truly are an amazing person and somebody that I look up to when it comes to this because you're just that you're you're just like a special effect you're that good you're just I can watch you all day long and never get bored and you seem like one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. Like you would look at me and see all my scars and all my problems I would never make fun of me like a lot of people do cuz a lot of people make fun of me and it really upsets me a lot.

@halyson7648
@halyson7648 2 года назад
A tip for taping lengthwise: instead of starting up and working down, go from one side of the tape to the other. Line your tape up long way and press it around the staff. Much easier to get it smooth that way as it wraps around in go. You can also do longer lengths of tape and get quicker coverage.
@SpydersByte
@SpydersByte 8 месяцев назад
it doesnt really help that she's holding it and trying to show it to the camera, doing it lengthwise wouldve been 10000% easier if she had just set it on the floor and held both ends of the tape as she laid it on top. Trying to hold both the stick and the tape at the same time and still place it accurately is just a recipe for disaster 😅

Michelle, thanks for all of the great content. I would love to see even more Kali/Jar'Kai/Niman/Form 6 tutorials. It's one of my favorite as you can block and attack at the same time. I know there are many actual kali combat channels but for lightsabers you have to have a bit of flair and no one makes this look as good and elegant as you do. (insert James Bond song "Nobody does it better") A few things I have picked up and may be useful to others. This one takes more time and requires some tools. The reason for doing one washer, one layer of tape is part to make them very secure and part to not have the metal rattle at the end. I've found that if I need more weight the way I do this I only need one washer per end, but if you need two, one to two tiny drops of super glue between the washers will tightly bond them together for eternity. Kids, don't use super glue with out parental supervision, you will glue your fingers together. That may be great for swimming but it's bad for spinning. Then I find the center of the end of my staff, google finding the center of a tootsie pop.. I mean circle. Drill (or have your parent or guarding drill) a pilot hole. If you do not make a pilot hole the staff WILL split. Put a few drops of wood glue in the pilot hole. Put 2-3 drops of superglue on the end of the staff, place the washer on the end and use a screw to attach them. Before you tighten the screw all the way you can add a drop of superglue and this will hold things together so tight the hulk wont be taking it apart. Then tape it up as usual. I have never seen a washer go flying with just the tape method, but as you drop the staff that tape can wear and if you don't pay attention and re-tape it is possible. This method stops that and the pilot hole and wood glue prevent splitting. If you prefer a more typical bo staff (thicker, usually about 1.25in/3cm) and do not want to use any tape, skip the wooden dowels at your big-box hardware store. Instead head to the isle with the shower curtain rods. Many of them have nicer rods that are higher quality and already finished with a stain and or lacquer and they right around that diameter. Something I want to try. In the 90's you use to be able to buy a yo-yo that would light up without any batteries. It used a centripetal force powered led of some sort. If I can find some of those I want to try to incorporate them into a staff.

This is totally gonna justify the massive roll of burgundy duct tape I bought ages ago. Nice to finally give that purchase a reason to have happened, lol. The hockey tape is good stuff. Except I started with white and that starts looking unpleasant quick, but great otherwise. Gonna end up with a bunch of rolls of this stuff, I flippin' know it. Tried that self-bonding silicone tape, too. Not so long lasting, but it's very grippy. Might fare better on a staff where it tends that the center part doesn't take hits as they did on sabers as I used them. And finishing the ends with a different tape cause there's no proper adhesive otherwise. Would have gotten more out of it if I had done that. But I felt it gave a bit more confidence at the time I tried it because the added grip was tremendous. However, while grip fades on that, it increases with the hockey tape over time. Tide goes in, tide goes out, you can't explain it. But I need to start looking into this cause things I want to start practicing I'd just rather not put that abuse into my sabers. Someone had also just recently suggested putting those stoppers on sabers, too, which is an idea. Probably still drop that a bunch in taking the skill over to that. Hopefully not, but.. Definitely gotta get out later and try my luck on some straight wood at Home Depot. 👍

I just went to the garden section in my local dollar store and bought a couple of 6' bamboo poles, then trimmed one to 4' feet for practice... 6' one wouldn't go so well in my tiny apartment. However, I hadn't thought to put tape on them for that nice aesthetic touch... so I guess I'm going back to the dollar store tomorrow! lol

Hi, Michelle. Just found your channel; instant subscription ;-) I am wondering about the length; as pretty much all dowels I found in hardware stores here are pre-cut only to 1m (3,28 ft) and all stores I phoned up don't offer any longer than that. What length would you recommend for staff and 1H saber, respectively? Is there even a minimum? I really appreciate your input. Thanks, and keep up the badassery!

This might seem ridiculous, but I when I was just starting out a while ago I happened to find that badminton rackets are actually quite good substitutes for staffs (I'm a pretty regular badminton player and one day I was just twirling one around my fingers out of boredom when I realised). A regulation racket is about the length of a collie stick, it's very light and balanced in the middle, the central part of it is very thin, and it's very durable (drop-proof). Additionally, the actual racket face part of it really doesn't get in the way and it makes it really easy to see which way around the staff is. And they're quite cheap. I actually managed to apply almost every basic skill across to one, and it definitely has made badminton matches far more interesting. Just a quick, random tip!

@dominicdiesposti2068

4’ is the standard length at the BIG box stores. If you want some more heft and a little more feel, try a bigger diameter dowel. Just 1/8” more adds a lot of feel to the handling. And SAND THE DOWEL. Stock off the shelf is a little rough. 😎👍

I made my own hanbo (90 centimeter staff) out of a leftover piece of clear acrylic rod. Maybe not the most traditional material, but it still looks really cool. I prefer the length of the hanbo, because it can perfectly double as a walking stick. Last week i made myself a 20 milimeter wide steel tip from an old desktop screw in which i engraved my initials and screwed (and glued) it onto one end of my white oak jo staff for extra impact. I love working on my Katori Shinto Ryu training gear and my workplace has all kinds of machinery to help me with that.
