35 years and you're literally the only other person I've EVER heard say "practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect". My theater coach lived by that and drilled it in to our heads in school and it's so true. This is a very well done tutorial. You really break down all of the mechanics and techniques well. MTFBWYA
For those who didnt grow up with the movies when they were fresh and struggle with learning it by memory and watching the movie over and over again hitting yourself sometimes. This is a pretty good tutorial
The way you explain spinning is so visual. You were born for this fr. It's kind of crazy how well you understand it. I would have never figured it out without this video. So, thank you.
I loved how you kept the mistake in here to show that you're humble and not just trying to all "too good". You know? Mistakes are lessons to be learned. Much love for that.
Thank you so much, all other videos I see are like “okay so you hold it forwards, tilt it a bit” and then just instantly do the spin and everyone in the comments are like “ohhhh that was easy” and I just don’t get it lol, this actually made sense
I appreciate how you broke down the motions, but specifically explaining the path your hand makes to exit the obi-ani. That was the piece I was missing for a smooth spin.
lightsaber spinning is very similar to bo staff spinning but I feel you can do more with a staff because you can hold it on different areas and let it touch your body
Wow that was awesome! I've been spinning since I was a kid and whenever my friends asked me to teach them I could never do it effectively. I always just say it's "more of a feeling thing". I always found myself fumbling when breaking it down. This was a fantastic guide! I'm showing everyone this now whenever they ask haha.
I looked at several Obi Ani tutorials and your tips were the only ones that seemed to help my brain click, very good tutorial. Thank you! Perfect practice makes perfect
Funnily enough the spin is something obi wan never does otherwise It only happened because the two knew each other's moves so perfectly that each lethal strike was garenteed to be blocked and perfectly countered without them even needing to commit,so it just resulted in a moderate amount of spinning
I'm so glad other people understand this. I remember back in the day people making so much fun of them and me thinking how absolutely perfect it was showing their connection and equal ability/knowledge of each other
Most people are stupid and take things mostly at face value. I don't mean to sound like a douche but this particular topic of star wars really bothers me. As there is so much depth to it that's wasted on so many. Again.... I don't think I'm better than people lol I know that sounds douchy
@@bedubes2757 No you're right. So many people misinterpreted that scene but it's because they both know what the other is doing so they basically were just dancing around eachother for a moment.
Except they would have landed because they are deliberately missing each other while doing the spin when there was no block or counter available. It resulted in an extreme amount of pointless spinning when either could have killed the other with 100% certainty about 5 times.
These detailed tips are amazing, I couldn’t figure out the obi-ani until the trace step was explained, the upside down lightsaber for the weight change is also genius
Carly King... This video is old. But... I just got a lightsaber. I'm almost 34 years old. Was just a kid when I saw the original Trilogy. I was a teen when Ewan and Hayden took a swing at eachother... Thank you for relighten the desire for having a lightsaber. And for learning me the Obi/Ani spin. Carly, your love for starwars is something all starwars fans should have. The Force will be with you.... Always. A Dutch fan.
This is by far the best tutorial on RU-vid every other one is so confusing the step by step explanation was great I wanted to learn this move ever since I was 10 years old and now I finally learned it thank you 😭
OMG CARLY i came back here to say i DID IT!!! after 3 days of practice i finally manage to get my obi-ani spin right, its so beautiful and the acomplishment is amazing THANK YOU!!! i have to say that tip about positioning your hand on your waist is great, i only started to understand when my only tought was about my hand in my waist it really works!!
I watched several of these, and they were good, but something about this one, I was able to get the muscle/body movements down, even without a sword or stick in my hand. So by the next day when I did, I could pretty much do it. And I have been just getting more confident with it, as I go. I did already do Bo Staff and Kali, so I was familiar with these movements. I did try to learn the Obi Ani years ago, but I never got it really, but watching this, it just took a day.
I finally got my first lightsaber with the help of your videos, and now I’m learning to spin it too. I didn’t know if it would be worth the money once I got a lightsaber, but learning tricks and practicing with it has been so much fun. Thanks for the help, now I can impress my friends with epic Obi-Ani spins 😎
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for your tutorials! I’m an uncoordinated schlump who just got my first light saber. I’ve watched so many tutorials, but yours actually work!!! You have a great way of slowing down a trick, breaking it down into simple steps, and offer great words of advice for us noobs. Thank-you! I’m actually starting to have some success with my saber already. I can hardly wait for more tutorials! Subscribed. :)
Thank you, all the other tutorials had you put it up right against your back as a step, which despite me having 10 years in stage combat, still made it deceptively difficult. The trace your waist part is a much better way of explaining the movement in a dynamic way.
Good you didn't reshoot the blade falling out bit as it's important for beginners to see that accidents happen and they shouldn't be discouraged when it happens to them. Great videos, keep it up.
All the other to tutorials only taught me how to do the first part where you have your arm out but then after that they explained it to weirdly.your tutorial genuinely helps do the FULL obi ani
Love that you kept that blade toss/loss in the video! Realistic is always best and it gives us hope knowing it happens! That saber also looks like Crimson Dawns Banshee hilt? I thought you did a very good job and I look forward to learning more! (Michelle C Smith) is a master saber spinner but honestly I thought you did just as good at teaching it! Great Job!!!
"Your new empire? Anakin my allegiance is with the republic, to democracy!" Said Obi-Wan "If you're not with me then your my enemy" Anakin replied "Only a sith deals absolutes I will do what I must" obi-wan pulls his lightsaber from his belt "You will try" said Anakin...
Those subtle blade flips to the other hand were just 👌 . Stellar video in all. Good guide and tutorial, clear instructions, great demonstration, hilarious bit when the blade flew loose. Great job.
Bro everytime I see the spin from the iconic duel, I get shivers, I love the film, I love the fight, and obviously the spin, then I think of what Star Wars has become now..
When you say 'and you're just going to go straight into it' I have watched this over an over an multiple times in slow motion and I still can't work out how you're turning your hand like that behind your back it's insane and looks awesome
Great video, very clear instructions. However the part where u put it by the hips and spin it back was a bit unclear, I struggled with the movement, and after slowing your actually move down I found it to be different and more complicated then the instructions
The fact you left the blooper in your video made me a subscriber!!!! Great video. I've been trying to learn this for ever and your video is much better than any of the others I've watched!
I tried learning this a couple years ago with a stick, watched like 3 videos nono of them helped. Watched this about 15 minutes ago, learned it in around 10. I didn't realise it was so simple to learn this complicated-looking trick! Very helpful!
It's amazing to me that 20 years ago we had a kid make a video imitating lightsaber moves and he was the butt of every joke, and now we have a beautiful u young woman teaching people how to imitate lightsaber moves. I call that progress! Thank you Ghyslain Raza!
What makes it so impressive for Anakin and Ben is that not only are they spinning a literal arm slicing gadget near their bodies, the blade is light, which means the center of gravity is below the hand not at the blade.
The look on your face when the blade came flying out was awesome...lol. Seriously, not laughing at you, but with you on that one. We've all done stuff like that when having fun with something and things go wrong. Nobody was hurt, so it's OK to laugh at it. That said, great tutorial and technique. May The Force Be With You.
I have been trying to learn how to do this for months now but none of the tutorials I found made sense until I saw this one. I got it down in less than ten minutes with both hands!!
Still a good learning lesson over a year later. I got my first Practice Kybers blade and picked up the Obi-Ani within the first 20 minutes. After the first hour, I was training my off-hand and fluent in my dominant hand. Thank you Carly!
You had the perfect opportunity to start this video off with “Hello there” and…you almost had it. We were on the verge of greatness, we were _this_ close.
My piano teacher always used to say “Practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect”. Im so glad I’m not the only one who has heard that and still uses it 😅 Wonderful video! The Obi-Ani is one of my favorite lightsaber tricks!
I love that you left the blade flying off in the video! I've seen a ton of instructional videos that are super tight and rigid. I think it makes you more relatable and fun plus you got sick Saber skills! Saw the Ahsoka Saber unboxing the other day and I want them so bad! Thanks for the lessons Teach! Liked, subbed and sharing!
Perfect practice makes perfect. Love it. I've said that myself many times! Another way to say it, which sounds a bit like Yoda: What we practice, we become. It really is true. Practice doesn't make perfect.
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to find someone who can do this and is teaching it. BTW I love that you didn’t edit the outtakes. 😂 Also I just watched your Saber brand quality video. Because I’ve always wanted a good quality light saber. Thanks for your videos and I’ll be looking for more. 🙏
So much easier learning from you then the other guy because he honestly never did the trace and pivot idea for hip through. Thank you imma practice really hard now
Thank you very much for this, I've been trying this one for a while but couldn't make it happen. With this tutorial I can finally do it. Much appreciated and may the force be with you 🙏
I’m definitely a sith. I connected two hilts together and took the blade off one side so the “Kybercrystal” shines a bright light and I have an extended hilt. Now all I have to do is angle the bottom of the hilt at their eyes and it’s so bright it gives me openings for swings.
You definitely have a knack for teaching, the way you break the movement down into clear sections is exactly the way it should be done. I'm betting you have dancing or marital arts training previous to RU-vid? Dancers make great material artists they can memorize forms with hundreds of moves in a week! Something that take many martial artists years. Good luck and keep up the good work. 👍
