great ingredients! it might work better if you boil the okra, remove it from the water then add the marshmallow and peppermint after so it's easier to strain. I find that the okra absorbs all the other ingredients and is a bit more time consuming but it has the same result! Thanks for the recipe!
I only found out about using okra as gel from my nurse last year who has beautiful natural hair. Apparently it is a commonly used in South Africa and Zimbabwe. I will definitely try it. Now that I am going natural after 20 years of relaxing. There is so many natural plants that is good for our hair I truly thank God for RU-vid because that knowledge can be shared
I agree with you sister, I used to relax my hair from 18 years old until I was 43 years old. I went natural in 2012 April 22nd. I have naturally curly wavy hair, and, still trying to find a better way to do it instead of flatiron.
Lol! Elisa, whoever told you that okra gel is commonly used in South Africa lied to you. I'm South African and live in South Africa. There's no such thing. Okra is a food staple that we ingest. I, personally, use flaxseed gel and even that is not common. What is common are weaves and mainstream hair products.
I've been doing the okra leave in conditioner now for about a week or 2 and it works great!! Defined curls and hydration . I'll add in marshmallow root next time.👍
I love your hair texture! I see a lot of comments that this is a lot of work but to me it's not. I was wondering what type of gel would give me a good hold on my 4c hair w/flaking so I could wear a ponytail. Looks like I'll be adding okra to my grocery list now. Thanks for the video!
I've been told that essential oils lose some of their effects when heated, so I wonder if the peppermint smell would mask the okra better if you add it after the gel was strained. That's cool you used okra!
Also, if just looking for scent; orange, lavender, clove are scents I love but anything can be used if it's just a scent you seek. Putting in after its cooled would produce a more intensified longer lasting fragrance.
Love this recipe! It turned out great and was super simple. I used a stocking instead of a strainer and got almost 6ozs of gel. My hair is shiny and defined, but I still have good volume. This will replace my aloe gel to manage my puff! Thanks again! 😁👍
Super cool!!! Where do you find the marshmallow root though? And I love this, I've been looking for something natural that will give back to my edges. This is perfect, thank you!
This is so different! In my culture, we prepare okra like this for soup and fufu....its so interesting to know that it can be used for hair. Nice video!
I found that when I made flax gel the straining process was MUCH easier when I strained it right off the stove. it still set thick too. I kinda wanna try this now, seeing your response about the firmer hold. . . I LOVE firm holds. I'm that girl that get the 10 hold eco & keeps the gel cast lol
Was this mixture sticky at all? Also, I am glad that you used an item that more rural people can get their hand on. Where I am from, there is not flax seeds in our stores but we have okra.
Amazing! I'd love to see an actual hair styling tutorial with you using this gel....Can it be used as a styler or more so like a gel to help with laying down edges and flyaway's?
Can you do more DIY videos like that? I want to learn how to make my own products and I know there are thousands of them out here on RU-vid too but I like to watch other people's ideas. Also, the gel laid your hair down pretty good, this makes me wonder how it will look like in a twist n curl, or just a regular ol' twist out. Cute hair in the vid by the way!
Very interesting. Good for you and the vegan lifestyle! Funny how people are creeped out about NATURAL products and food items. You'd really cringe if you knew what was in the products you use. 😉
Great! I just cooked okra the other night and now I have another purpose for it. Yay. Do you have a healthy recipe for cooking okra. Like others have said, its slimy but when seasoned right it is good.
It does not make your haur crunchy nor is there any white flakes. Hydrates your hair really good, defines your curls and detangles very well. I've been using this quite a few times now. It works!!
Your hair does not dry crunchy as with the flaxseed gel. I combined both flaxseed gel with okra gel. It only has essential oils in it, no carrier oils. Definitely made a difference in my hair. It was noticeably less crunchy and soft. And it defines your curls just like flaxseed gel. I didn't even add honey!😍😍😍💗
Hi can you tell me how long I can store the okra gel or is this a single use product? Also, does this product cause buildup? Can this be refreshed over time for my style or should I wash my hair everytime?
Hello! I just transitioned from relaxed to natural and did my big chop but I would love to know how you got that beautiful hair style! I absolutely love that hair style! Do you think you could do a tutorial on that hairstyle??
I LOVE YOU GUYS....YOU ALL ARE THE BOMB!!! MAKE ME EXCITED ABOUT GOING NATURAL JUST SO I CAN TRY YOU ALL REMEDIES...KEEP DOING U AND REMEBER YOU CANT PLEASE THEM ALL (reading the comments lol)
I buy marshmallow root herb from Mountain Rose Herbs. It's a awesome hair moisturizer and softener. I make a spritz with it using distilled water, Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gelly and essential oils: Cedarwood, Lavender and Peppermint. I spritz my natural hair with it 2x daily, morning and evening. Love it!
Oh my god... another project to try out, thanks!! So why ocra? lol Is there a hold difference between flax seeds and ocra seeds? I would most definitely like to try this. =] I also saw a video of naptural85 using an old stocking to squeeze the excess gel out, using tongs. That could have helped!
That's so genius. How long did the gel keep ur hair intact? I ❤️ ur story , going vegan, taking the natural route in all facets of ur life. ....yall sisters are soooo dope. #favoriteutubechannel
