I used to use Flaxseed gel all the time. However, it was difficult to keep it for an extended period of time and I couldn't really change the viscosity how I wanted to without making a mess. I like this recipe much much better than Flaxseed.

1/3 cup of fenugreek powder, 1/3 cup of hibiscus powder, 2 1/2 cups of water put on stovetop on low heat. When herbs are fully mixed turn off heat put lid on and allow to infuse for at least 8 hrs. Take off lid add 2 tbsp of penetrating oil like avocado oil, castor oil, olive oil etc. Mix with mixer and apply on wet hair, saran wrap or shower cap hair (put thermal heat cap or steam hair for extra absorption) let fenugreek hibiscus mask sit on hair for at least 2 hours. Has amazing slip to all hair textures especially type 4 hair. Enjoy!👍🏽

Where do you purchase many of your ingredients? Love all your recipes 😘
@curlytea
@curlytea 5 лет назад
I get the ingredients from many different suppliers. The easiest way to find a list is to go to my website here: www.curlytea.com/listing-category/suppliers-wholesalers For cosmetic ingredients, the 1st place I check is usually Lotioncrafter.com. If they don't have it, I move on to MakingCosmetics.com. And if they don't have it (lol), I move on to Ingredientstodiefor.com. I use that order because ingredientstodiefor.com has A LOT to choose from, but their shipping is the slowest (for me) . For natural products, ironically, I check Vitacost.com first because they ship very quickly and the way they pack their ingredients is outstanding. If they don't have it, I move on to Mountainroseherbs.com, which is absolutely the best source for natural teas and oils. They take longer to ship (for me).

Can you reuse the fenugreek seeds? Also does the fenugreek seeds cooks faster than flaxseeds?
@curlytea
@curlytea 4 года назад
Don't worry about cooking Fenugreek seeds. What you're looking for is the water to turn a very noticeable yellow color. Once the water is yellow, that's what you need. I've never kept fenugreek seeds afterwards, so I don't know how effective a 2nd and 3rd batch from the same seeds would be.

No. This gel has a broad-spectrum preservative and did not require refrigeration for the roughly 2 months it lasted for me.

Can I use slippery elm powder instead?
@curlytea
@curlytea 5 лет назад
I've never used the powered form, but I'm gonna say no because powders tend not to absorb fully. This gel will be left on the hair. If you have a great idea to strain the powdered version, please try it. But I've never been able to successfully use a powered herb outside of Matcha in a hair recipe without it leaving a mess in my hair. lol!

Can the marshmallow root and slippery elm be substituted for powders. Ie. marshmallow powder & slippery elm powder, fenugreek powder? Thanks 🙏🏾
@curlytea
@curlytea 3 года назад
If you have a non-messy, effective way to strain the powder, go for it. I hate using powders because I hate having to try to stain it. If you don't want to worry about trying to strain powder, get the actual herb.
@ashtraybitch

Does the gel have the same amount of hold without the fenugreek seed?
@curlytea

Fenugreek seed itself doesn't provide any hold. If you don't have fenugreek seed, you can simply skip it or replace it with another herb.

Could you add an oil to this recipe?
@curlytea
@curlytea 4 года назад
I wouldn't. This recipe does not include any traditional emulsifiers to make sure whatever oil you add won't just separate out later. This is only a gel.
@tina.lerato
@tina.lerato 5 лет назад
Would it be possible to substitute the fenugreek seeds for something else? Maybe flaxseeds?

Fenugreek and Flaxseeds have different physical properties. Flaxseed gel is also notoriously difficult to keep for an extended period of time.

Can you add a oil. Is the marshmallow root and slippery elm a humectant? Is this like a curling custard or jelly? Are there other ingredients you can add to it? Is this still on your website and do you tell how to add other ingredients? Sorry so long!!! Just curious!!
@curlytea
@curlytea 11 месяцев назад
Hi! Technically you can add oil but it will make the gel opaque/cloudy because it will become an emulsion. I wouldn't use marshmallow root or slippery elm as a traditional humectant in this case. This is a curling gel that defines curls. You can add other water-based ingredients to this. For example, if you want to add more extracts, that's fine. Yes, this recipe can still be accessed by members at the site. I don't have a separate section talking about all the other possible ingredients that can be added to this recipe, but the full video, ingredient list and my notes are available here: www.curlytea.com/0823/marshmallow-root-curling-gel.html

@curlytea
@curlytea 4 года назад
Well, this recipe doesn't have a traditional emulsifier. If you add a butter, it may look like it's mixed, but it could separate over time. You can try to melt an emulsifier into your butter 1st, then mix the two together with a stick blender to see what happens.

Is this ph balance
@curlytea
@curlytea 4 года назад
The pH should be somewhere between 4-5.5 for optimal effect. pH balance is 7 (I think), but curly hair in particular seems to like slightly acidic ingredients (pH 4 - 5.5) from my understanding.

Hey I don't want to use marshmallow root as gel I want to use it as spraying live-in conditioner so Can I mix marshmallow root powder with water & glycerin & use it on my hair? Will that way it give me enough slip?
@curlytea
@curlytea Год назад
You can use marshmallow root. If you use the real root from mountainroseherbs, it will not gel up by itself. If want a spray, skip the gelling ingredient. As for slip, I'm not sure. If you want slip but don't want it to get thick, you may have to use something like Cassia Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride instead of the gelling agent.

@curlytea
@curlytea 2 года назад
You'll have to do sufficient antimicrobial testing for an official shelf-life time frame. I usually use this in a little over a month and in that time I don't notice any problems. Now when I make this, I add an antimicrobial to the recipe called Antimicro Root Blend : www.makingcosmetics.com/PRV-AMROTBL-01.html?lang=default If you're also concerned about shelf life, you can switch out the preservative I used for liquid germall plus or one of the really heavy hitters.
