Easy DIY Overhead Storage Shelf Installation

This is a video showing how to easily install some extra storage shelving. The shelving is by Fleximounts and was relatively easy to install. The whole project maybe took about 3-4 hours. You will need the following tools to complete this project: Stud finder, tape measure, safety glasses, a drill with some drill bits, a socket wrench is definitely advised but not required (but you will want it, trust me), and a ladder. Have two of these: Throw the hardware they give you in the trash and pick up some M8 bolts and a magnetic nut driver. The included allen hardware is impossibly cheap. Also these things will wobble and be unsteady if you follow the instructions and don’t modify them. Order some triangle gusset braces and fix them to the vertical posts meeting the ceiling. These racks are nice, but it’s a full on dealbreaker/ inferior install if you don’t strengthen the verticals with braces.

I'm having a hard time understanding this but want to follow your advice. How do you use the gusset braces

The instructions actually call for wall mounting when you're this close to the wall. Might have been easier to exclude the ceiling braces and just fix the vertical bars directly to the wall on the back side rather than have that tiny gap. I have 5 of the 4x6 units I'm about to add to my garage so I've been watching these videos. Learn a little more with every video. Thanks!

The verticals are supposed to be in the center of the ceiling pieces to equally distribute the weight. You are over loading the end of every ceiling piece.

I’ve watched a few of these videos where they install it like this and can’t figure out the misunderstanding of how load bearing works. Hopefully they don’t overload it.

Good on you guys from down under! You made a very articulate and easy to understand video. Better than a lot who make it seem more complicated than it is! I can buy all the items I need and give a young apprentice some cash to put them up. Thank you!
