Like your work turning making a rectangular pond and filter, that’s a design that’s accessible to many. Kev at Oz Ponds definitely worth checking out too. He makes some great ponds, nice sense of humour too.
Nice to see a fellow brit do a video. In the process of doing my own bog filter, and like you have watch ozponds, as his climate seems similar to ours, and most of the videos I found were from the States. I have a 140ltr tub for my in ground pond, already have lots of pebbles and stone, just need pea gravel. Now awaiting delivery of connectors etc, then can get cracking. Can't wait. Now going to check out the vids on the links you mentioned. Thanks for taking the time and putting the videos out.
Thank you!! Yeah, it’s been working well, but I do sort of wish I’d made it a bit bigger.. so the plant roots had a bit more room, plus if it was a bit bigger I could have added a clean out valve like it my diy patio pond bog filter! Thanks for watching, and good luck with your bog filter build! 😊
Love the video . Thankyou for the idea. I have an above ground pond with 1000 litres of water. I have 4 goldfish and I think I will use your filter type.
Hello! That was real cool...I honestly think I could make one after watching your instruction 😊 I bet a small version on an aquarium would be cool too. Oh, BTW, LOVED when you stood on the plank of wood while cutting it 🤣🤣
Thank you! 😊 I’ve thought before that a small version of something like this would be a cool filter for an aquarium! Haha, yeah, I don’t think the saw I was using was very sharp, so I really had to go for it, which somehow involved me getting on top of the plank of wood! 😂🌿🐟😊
Hi, thank you for your wonderful videos. It would be great if you can show how to put media and what kind of media or a sponge in this filter for better efficiency and water filtering.
Thanks a lot. The question is in this method the water comes from bottom to top on the filter, and how is it possible not to clog the inner pipeline with the sponge or whatever media that we have to put on the top bucket to do the filtration?
Hi love your video just have quick question how come u have the water coming from the bottom to the top and not have the water starting From the top to the bottom
Thanks for the content, I have built similar for my half barrel pond. Having issues with the amount of cleaning am having to do. I only have 1 koi and 2 gold fish in the pond but seem to have to clean the bog filter monthly and still the pond isnt particularly clear. am i doing something wrong?
Hi there, how big is the pond and the bog filter? Also, whats your flow rate like? Something you could think about is maybe adding some sort of pre-filter?
Dear Ginger Fishy - I was SOOOOO excited to make a bog filter - but sadly - Watercress is illegal here in South Africa. Is there an alternative to Watercress that you can recommend that is not blacklisted here? I think I can manage to find Water Iris... but don't know if that filters as well. I have a 1000 litre pond with about 6 big veil-tail goldfish. Please help?
Hi there, water Iris will work well, and is very good for nutrients export.. it does have a big root structure though, so just be careful it doesn’t take over the whole bog. You could also try Creeping Jenny, I’ve just added some to one of my bog filters, and it doing well. Creeping jenny also has a less invasive root structure when compared to something like Iris. Hope that helps!
What will you put inside the bog filter? Aren’t you going to install a tube on both side of the T connector with holes to evenly disperse the water in the filter?
With it being quite a small bog filter, I just used pea gravel. I did think about adding some tubing with holes to the T, but decided against it in the end as I was worried that the smaller holes may block up more easily. Thanks for watching!! 😊
Thank you!! I’m glad you like the videos! Yeah, can use a single outlet, just make sure its big enough to handle the water flow being pumped into the filter. If the outlet is too small and your pump is too powerful, the bog may over flow, because the water can’t flow out quick enough. Remember that the water is being pump into the filter under pressure but it leaving just through gravity. Good luck with the build!!! 👊😊
Hi Andi, thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Is it a list of materials you need, or a little of the tools you’ll need? If you let me know, when I’ve got a minute, I’ll put it in the description for you! Thanks again for watching! 😎
Hi I'm in the process of doin a water garden gonna add couple of fish eventually what kind of stainer did u use for the outside of ur outdoor pond thanks x
Hi Debbie, the colour of stain I used was Natural Oak. If your in the UK I got it at Wickes, and it was the Wickes own brand, Decking stain - Natural Oak. 😊👍
The water is pumped from the pond into the bottom of the filter, it then rises up the through the planter, which is filled with gravel, which provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow, this beneficial bacteria will convert ammonia (which is toxic to fish) to nitrite (which is also toxic to fish) to nitrate (which is only toxic in high concentrations). The plants that will be planted in the filter will soak up the nitrates before they reach toxic levels (they will also soak up ammonia directly), and therefore keeping the water biologically safe for fish. Whilst this is all going on, physical waste will settle in the bottom of the filter, which the plants can also tap into. It’s not the perfect filter design as I didn’t include a clean-out valve to remove the waste that will build up at the bottom. But I have since made a better filter that does include a clean out valve. You can see it in the filter I’ll built in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oFc0oT5Zhks.htmlsi=73FtmGbyShQzb9n4 Hope that helps!
Hi mate. The pond you have made looks great👍 I’m currently in the process of planing my own above ground pond and keep changing my mind about using a pond liner or a plastic tub. How many litres of water does the plastic tub you have used hold?
Hi mate, thanks very much! The tub I used is 470L. I did think about building one out of wood and using pond liner, but was just a bit worried about how strong it would be, with all the water pressure. Plus I think it can be quite tricky to get the pond liner in neatly. Lots of people do do it that way though. Good luck with your build! 👍
I’ve got it on a 470L tub. I think the filter capacity might vary depending on the plants. Long term I’m only planning on keeping White Cloud Mountain minnows in there, so bio load will be low. I am going to be keeping 9 goldfish in there temporarily though, while I rebuild there main pond, but I’ll probably have to do some fairly regular water changes. Thanks for watching!
Hi mate, I haven’t got a link unfortunately, as I bought it from my local ‘World of Water’. But if you just Google ‘470L Laguna tub’, theres a few places selling it. I will say though I’ve been trying to get hold of a second one for another project, and I’m struggling to find one, a lot of places seem to be sold out! Anyway, hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
although a good vlog i would of thought bigger piping should be used. 1 pipe should be able to handle the full flow from the pump in case of 1 blocking up this set up would def over flow
so , looks great with no plants in it , give it a few months with plants and gravel , the outlets will block one day when you are not there , the bog filter will overflow and you will empty the whole pond in about 2 hrs ........ nice
Hey buddy, great idea you have there. If I might sugest a small change... add 2 pipes with holes drilled in them and both a end cap, it will disperce the water true the whole planter box and not only the easiest way of flow. If you see what I mean, if you do have questions you can always send a pm on snapchat. Always happy to help a fellow fish owner, for feedback or a other look on a sertain problem. 😉
Thanks man, been working hard on the editing! And yeah that’s a good point on adding the 2 pipes, I think I’ll do that, will help hold that inlet bit all in place a little better as well! Thanks again bro! 🙌
