how much does it cost to build this, it seem you put lots of $1 stuff in there but its add up. Maybe better off buying a used filter? Or buy them in bulk online.

I have been contemplating a design for a 55'er myself for a couple of years now. I have found that it is mostly the mechanical filtering that is doing most of the water clarification.
@justbecause3187
@justbecause3187 2 года назад
@@78tag the design in this video looks to be about 80% mechanical/bio filter and 20% swirl separator, so you could definitely build better stand alone swirl filters if you wanted to. It does look pretty good for an all in one solution and I don't doubt it does a great job, but it would still be interesting to see how much of the solids the swirl part manages to catch.

I just build a filter based on your design with slight variations and installed it on a 14’x36” pool. That my son has a couple large bass and a large sunfish in. We use the original pool filter /pump without the cartridge filter as the pump. Within 2 or 3 days the murky water was crystal clear leaving only some sediment on the pool floor. Works great! Thanks for the info.

Very good video! This is pretty much a small skippy filter but with a clean out added. Skippy says never clean them ever ever...but I can't wrap my head around that. I had one for about 15 years. I grew plants in it and the root system basically took over until it was impossible to clean. At that point I just let it do its thing. Never had a problem.

The swirling motion aided by the 45 degree elbows at the bottom helps prevent channeling in a major way! I’ve never seen that done before. Genius!!😀 I agree with a few others regarding filter media: Lava rocks (or bio balls) instead of all the pads and rocks. Adding some pillow batting at the very top of your rocks will really help keep your water crystal-clear! Lastly, you should eliminate the extra hole in the lid. It’s not needed. You only need one input and one output.😉 Awesome bio filter!😃 Thank you for your video.😁

Im going to build a duck pond filter tonight using this basic concept. On the bottom will be the same until the green sponges. I am going to replace those and use the large blue sheet of macropore furnace filter found at hardware stores for under$6. 3 -4 layers of that then lava rock. I am using a large bruit trash can. Cost will be around $100 for one much larger. Thank you for this great video and making my mind up of what system I am going to use.

Great video... The main issue that jumped out was when you finished by filling the filter with tap water that contains chlorine or chlarimaines. Instead, use aquarium water, or precondition your water. I prepare all my filter media in a big laundry sacka in the flow of a differnt filter, aquarium, or pond to grow a bio film. Spend the time to grow your beneficial biome just as your would your livestock. Never rinse your filter media with tap water because it kills off your bacteria. It will save you weeks of having to reestablishing the colony of beneficial bacteria. That being said, the design was very cost effectve and effecient. Also, this is not a swirl filter as the media is stationary. A swirl filter utilizes the same as spinning principal as a cyclonic partical seperator in a wood shop dust colletcor. Keep up the great educational work. :) I'm a biologist that managed millions of gallons of aquatic life. I enjoyed watching your video. GinoJazz.com

I built one using this method and it has lasted for years. Its in a large rectabgle bin so not as strong as a bucket and it has finally sprung a leak. I'll be building a pond soon in the back yard and moving my turtles out there from the garage setup. I plan on using a 7gal bucket. Great video. 👍
@kevindorman8369
@kevindorman8369 2 года назад
The only thing i would add is maybe cut out some sections out of the upside down bucket where the water can flow straight out of the 90° pipes into the main bucket easier. Really create a swirl. I used an upside down metal crate and the flow was insane.

Yep, this is as sweet ass of a home made DIY doohickey as you are ever gonna lay eyes on. I know that sombitch is gonna work like a charm. The only changes I will make is, I'm using a 25 gallon blue water tank & I will not add 2 giant rocks to hold down the media. Respectfully, in my opinion, it's a waste of valuable filtration space. I will add a fine pea gravel atop of a finer mesh seperator. Thanks a million for the killer easy to understand and afford filter design video. It helped Ole WW out quite a bit. Go easy pimp & GOD Bless!

I like the basic concept, especially the swirl feature to prevent channeling. I would use lava rock and or bio balls on the bottom, then course filter padding, topped off with polyfill stuffing. That way it doesn't clog too rapidly and reduce waterflow. Also makes cleaning a lot easier. With the intake coming through the lid, and the discharge on the side near the top, I would not add that other pipe at the bottom. It is not necessary, and only adds another place for leaks.

WOW! There's a blast from the past! That big metal 68"x38" Camel Joe advertising sign is worth around $800 bucks now... 23:58 sorry, what'd you say? 😜 I'm in the process of redesigning a pump/filter debris skimmer for my Dad's 1800 gallon Koi pond so thanks for the ideas. I think I'm going to build a massive version of something like this but "upside-down", with the feed pipe swirl "T" up top, layers of fine filter media on top, then rocks at the bottom around the pump and also a valve at the bottom too so you can open it and let any super fine sediment flush out every so often into a hidden French drain. All that is just to keep the pump clear and working, which feeds up to two big bio-filter drums. With the feed coming from the top I think it should be easier to clean out larger debris or possibly even be "maintenance free"? (The pond is under a bunch of Fir trees, so lots of stupid NEEDLES to deal with...)

I used paint sponges and lava rock, bio balls in the bottom, but one thing that really helped was a 5 gallon paint strainer netting that fits perfect. I have to clean it every week cause of pond sludge, but it's working! My feed is at the top and bottom output. After weeks, the sponges clogged and I also had gauze netting above the sponges. So its bio balls on the bottom, then lava, then sponges, gauze the paint strainer net. I slice the tubing with a T connection, so it sprays out with stoppers on the ends. So now Im using bio, lava and paint strainer, cause I was cleaning every weekend and there were some times it clogged and flooded out. So no it wont clog, I clean it every two weeks by dumping and rinsing. Im not happy and want something better.

Maybe the size of the filter is just to small for the size of you pond? They say 10% of the pond size.. so this 5 gallon only good for a 50 gallon pond max .. bigger then that you have problems and cleaning more often..

I reffer use Cotton where the water comes in and then filtermedia based on stones ,becouse spongfilters only get the dirt away make your aquarium clear but not holding mutch good bacteria in and not filtering mutch the nitrade with media filter stones (Matrix) it balance your Amonia ,nitrades ....

I want to do a very similar build for my stock tank pond, but I’d like to use a planter pot they sell at Home Depot that’s more heavy duty.

Very cool!! I think this is my next pond project. What is the bottom intake hose with valve for? Is that where you can hook it to a garden hose for easy filling of your pond?

Wouldn't recommend this kind of design for a pond. Its going to clog like crazy. I have a goldfish pond with a multi filtration set up and I still have to dig leaves and crap out. Goldfish are messy.

I've watched several videos now and your approach features right up there... Good work!! Just one question: did you use sealant around the drain or did the fitting through the bucket wall have its own gasket?

@mangofever4681

The design is good, but the filter material is to fine and compact. Its like putting an end cap on the pump. I think it would be better if you cut the green pads into 4 pieces and just drop them in the bucket. with out compacting it, so water can flow around and through without to much resistance. The idea with this type of filter is it doesn't need or shouldn't be cleaned and the top should be exposed to sunlight.
