This is the easiest way to set up a rain water catchment system. It only takes about 45 minutes install. I bought the 55 gal barrel, the faucet with connector and screen from the Barrel Superstore. Website link: barrelsuperstore.com/ (no affiliate but good people)

Good advice on never drinking that water without extreme filtering and treatment. Birds and other animals poop on the roof and all that stuff filters down with that water. Also bacteria, protozoa, and larvae will start growing in that water. Filter and treat it if you have to use it. Also make sure it is sealed from mosquitos so you don't create a larva pit.
@simplyherbs9873
@simplyherbs9873 Год назад
Exactly. Bird poo is one thing, and microorganisms will breed in that water. But there are other problems. Roofs are made of different materials, and every roof is in a different stage of decomposition. Thus, microscopic roof particles will also end in that water. Furthermore, some people regularly treat their roof with chemicals to prolong its lifespan. Home water filters are not designed for water like that. The filter will be contaminated and clogged with microorganisms and other particles. Microorganisms will keep on multiplying in the filter, some may pass through it or their by products. I'm a big fan of this channel, but this video is a bad idea and should be deleted. Otherwise some people will suffer because of it.

Did the same idea with a 30 gallon barrel and used it at the garden shed to water the garden. Made a fertilizer mix with some fresh cow manure in a burlap bag in the barrel. Added a spigot at the side of the barrel and hooked up a soaker hose to feed the garden. Added a piece of sewer and drain pipe which I attached to inside the top for the gutter downspout Added a tee at the top for overflow and put a 4 inch plastic ball in the pipe to use as a stopper so the barrel would not leak out the top. Once it floated to the top it sent the flow out the overflow pipe without letting any of the manure tea out. Went out three times a week to soak the garden. Great garden for the last 6 years.

gravity feed is good. However, you can also add in a small submersible pump powered by a 12 volt battery (recommend solar rechargeable for sustainability) this will also enable you to connect longer hoses to it if you want to move water to places like your garden. you wont get high pressure but its effective for this purpose.

I purchased a 50 gallon rain barrel from amazon. It comes with the top filter (30 second assembly required) and the spigot. I also pruchased a screen to cover the top and sides. As a extra safety measure I purchased mosquito screen mesh and covered the top of the barrel (2 layers of protection). Then I cut smaller pieces of the mosquito mesh and placed it over the top and end of the drainage pipe. I will pre-treat this water and use a life straw to drink it with.

Awesome info Don!! I ordered my water barrels from Sportsman's Guide. They are used Pickel Barrels so they have a slight smell. I also have several of the food grade removable top barrels, but they get used for silo corn purchases. A couple of things, and I think you mentioned it, are the overflow pvc can be run into a second or even third barrel placed next to the original giving more than 100 gallons of water catchment. The other thing is that my father ran a pvc pipe off of his central air conditioner outside unit and down hill to a fifty gallon catchment and it stays full of clean, pulled out of the air, water. He just uses it for watering the plants, but it can be used in an emergency if needed. Personally, I need to capture the water from my dehumidifier I have in my out building. Again, clean water from the air. Thanks for the info and how too.

Not sure if you had this info., so I thought I'd share. The formula to calculate how much catchment you have is: area (in square feet) x amount of rainfall (in inches) x .623 = yield (in gallons) i.e.: Let's use a 10x10 piece of plastic painters tarp... 100 sq ft tarp x .5 inches of rain x .623 = 31.15 gallons captured.

I have an overflow pipe, from one 55 gallon barrel, to another, right beside it, then an over flow off of it. One day, I drained them both, and cleaned them dry. And in a 1 hour heavy rain, both were full again, and spraying extra water out! I do recommend elevating them off the ground for filling buckets, or running a hose. And they need an overflow. I occasionally sprinkle in a Pinch of the granulated pool shock, to clean and kill anything inside. In Mexico, people have black plastic tanks on their roofs, to collect rain water, and run their plumbing. The black plastic keeps sun light out, preventing algae growth. And probably makes Hot water! Great video Sootch! Next you can get one of those 500 gallon tanks, in the cage, and build a water tower.
@frostyfrances4700
@frostyfrances4700 Год назад
Please give proportions of a 'pinch' of granulated pool shock to the water. 5 gals? 15? Don't presume some readers have a single ounce of bedrock information to build on. I can assure you some of us don't. Plus, do you presumably have to drain it for heavy winters. 20%? 100%? Is there any way to keep the water from freezing at all? I mean short of straw bales and manure between the barrel and bales?
@chrissewell1608
@chrissewell1608 Год назад
@@frostyfrances4700 To True! 1 granule of pool shock will treat about 5 to 10 gallons of water, to be clean enough to drink. It is that strong of stuff. So a pinch will completely treat the water of 100 gallon tank, and kill any algae inside the tank, too. My Pool shop guy, uses some when he goes on vacation to Mexico. Said he has never gotten sick from their water! But buddy, I have drank the untreated water, and it ain't no fun!
@frostyfrances4700
@frostyfrances4700 Год назад
@@chrissewell1608 - Thanks! But I forgot to ask how often would be a good idea for preventive maintenance with the pool shock. I've been trying to gradually gather a general emergency collection of items for all sorts of needs, and I do have several Life Straws. I also know how to make my own Berkey and do stuff like that. But it would be advisable to do as much for water storage as possible, and I don't like to leave any stone unturned. As a former pro in Civil Defense from way back in the day, I don't have any confidence in these poor souls who think they can bug out longterm and remain safely hidden in the wilderness with their hoard of goodies either. Just thought I'd mention that. First of all, modern technology being what it is, anybody with the right equipment can find someone if they've dug a tunnel halfway to China. Secondly, human nature being what it is and will doubtless remain, at some point in societal breakdown, there'd inevitably come a time when the more violent survivors WOULD be determined to find bug outs. We used to explain to people that in the first 2-3 days after a major disaster, you'll likely see a lot of voluntary cooperation and sharing of scarce resources. After a week a lot of people will start growing desperate and dangerous. Before 2 weeks are out, the gloves will come off and the people who were so generous at first are liable to turn on a dime. The typical time you can expect to have to wait for serious government help to arrive can be up to 10 days. Point being, the only real safety as well as the RIGHT thing to do is to prepare as best you can and try to pool resources for as long as possible. Some people are too untutored to do basic prep and others suffer the illusion that they can fend off starving hordes forever with their little pea-shooter Armalites. Not much can be done about them, but for everyone's sake the rest of us need to do all we can. Knowledge is power! And if the violent militias get the civil war they want, things will deteriorate even faster. We wouldn't be able to save everybody, but for a multitude of reasons we need to get ready to do what we can. Beau's Rule 303.
@chrissewell1608
@chrissewell1608 Год назад
@@frostyfrances4700 I don't know how often you may want to use the pool shock, and don't want to tell you wrong. I did look at a Berkey, water filter system today. And really liked them. How about adding a hose to spigot and running the hose into the house and then add a small pump to be able to fill bottles inside dwelling? If so, what kind of pump would you suggest?

We are new to prepping and are looking for water supply options. Someone told me that since we have a typical asphalt shingle roof and the water would be toxic and any type of filter system would not remove those toxins. Suggestions?
