I definitely like the 4 inch overflow. I have my overflow on my last barrel in a chain of 4 barrels and when they are full, hard rain backs up into my gutter and pours everywhere. I plan to add another 2” overflow to my intake barrel since I have leftover material from my 2” manifold system. Hopefully that will help. Plan to put some kind of manual diverter on the feed also. Im not running a first flush so pollen season is nasty water.

So, your system is different from many others because you live where it freezes. Me too. I'm thinking of putting the barrels on their sides so that when they are drained for the winter any remaining water will just expand into the convexity of the barrel. Nice technique for adding the bulkhead.

Great video. If I tie into my downspout using a diverter, does that act like the first flush and the over flow allowing the leaves and shingle gravel to still flow down the downspout. Thanks

If your bulkhead fitting where up another two inches, tightening them down enough to flatten the barrel a little would make for a better gasket seal.

Where are you getting all your supplies I went to Home Depot and they are not to be found thanks

You may have mentioned in your video. Working on our first project and was going to follow similar setup. How are you cleaning any sludge or build up in bottom of barrels?

What is your plan to mitigate algae growth? Those white barrels are incubators.
@UpandAtIt
@UpandAtIt 2 года назад
We don't currently have a plan. But, we haven't had to tackle algae, yet. We may end up covering the system with black tarps. Do you have a suggestion?

@@UpandAtIt You'll have to either paint them black, which isn't a good long-term plan (chip/peel)... or wrap them in heavy black visquene (sp?) in a way that sheds water (no pockets). I have the blue barrels, and I still need to do a bleach fill/flush a few times every spring....even though it's been emptied for the winter. Algae and bacteria are always an issue. Best of luck!

@@tamasmaksza6450 Thank you we will definitely be covering them next year for sure. I will clean them in the fall with bleach. We wanted to see how they did this year as they do not get direct sunlight.

So far it is holding, but I keep a close eye on it.

I hate to say it, but I think that tightening the fitting is a temporary fix. You may have to replace the barrel.

So far it is holding after I tightened it down. Hopefully it continues to hold till the end of the season.
