I have recently bought a power cord from China. Very similar to the cable shown in this video. The moment I put it in my system and played music, my chin fell to the floor. OMG! Everything sounds much clearer and defined now. I have to admit I have always been somehow skeptical about cables, but I trust my ears and I can say it really made the difference!

Yes same for me, but I found it to be too detailed/cold/analytical with the rhodium plated connectors. Its like changing a whole amp lol

No one should trust their “ears” as they are one of the most inaccurate senses and highly susceptible to psychological influences. In other words, they’re easy to trick. But if the end result is you enjoying it, then that’s a win of course.

Ok so I have been working in electrical & cabling systems for 30+ years & although I am a "non-believer" (that it makes any difference noise wise) I will offer you & others that wish to make their own power cables a pretty good tip, because after all manufacturing your own to a specific length to suit your equipment if it doesn't cost you much will be satisfying (just don't bother with the shielding bit) So when you start with your three wires before you do anything else hold all three together & insert them into a cordless drill like you would for a drill bit, then hold the other end tight (or get someone else for that bit) then pull the trigger on slow & watch your wires all spin together perfectly without any kinks or uneven bits. Then when you apply your outer sheaths & heat shrink it will be smaller diameter & easier to slide the last bits over. One last point...don't twist power wires too tight, just similar to how Tharbamar did is fine.

Thanks a million, Mark! Just taking advantage of this to ask a basic (for me, a lerner) question: why do I see folks twisting all the internal cables and audio path wires (input wires) inside the amplifier? I see twisted cables from vintage power boards to the output transistors bolt to the heatsinks. Same thing with the "minus" and "plus" cables from the PSU to the smoothing big capacitors... In essence, what the big "benefit" of twisting wires and cables? Aren't these creating a bit of resistance end to end?? Thanks again!

@@montech5647 Hi Montech, so twisting wires is all about attempting to eliminate RF interference. If you imagine those wires all loose with different spaces all along the length any induced EMR would be different strength's depending on how close or not each wire is which in turn would pose a problem for removing it. Now imagine the wires twisted...they are all equal to the noise because of the twist & as such an equal induced noise presents a "common" noise which common mode rejection circuits can remove a lot easier than random wires. Mostly this is a problem where the wires are a feed into any amplification stage (you don't want to amplify noise) The power cables that Tharbamar made don't have to be twisted for any other reason than making it neat & easier to slide sleeves over, the same goes for speaker wires. Wire resistance doesn't have anything to do with twisting, if all wires have the same material/gauge/length they will be extremely close in resistance...loose or twisted.

Hello Mark, how critical or important is “ torquing down” the screws in this application. I just viewed a video from Furutech where they recommended a torque of 80 c (not sure of the rest). Thx, Mike.

have ordered some 4TC cable from China on ebay, it has 8 braided conductors in 2 colours all constructed the same way Kimber build theirs. this allows for no shielding to be required as the 8 strand braid acts as a natural shield. also the construction is like a tunnel that allows you to thread a single conductor through for the earth, it just looks so much neater when finished

Generally it’s my understanding that if you buy a decent component, you can rest assured that the power cord that came with the device will do the job. You don’t have to replace it, unless you want to have a fancy looking power cord and that’s okay too. Fancy power cords will typically not change the performance since AC is converted into DC, and almost certain the manufacturer has installed a noise filter in the component as well. Nice looking power cord though. 🙂

No, sorry it is not like that. Hans Beekhuyzen explains in audio hygiene why. The power cables delivered with the component are normally not shielded. It is the shielding which is preventing the power cable to radiate disturbance to for example an RCA cable carrying the audio signal, which are mostly nearby on the backside of the component. So it is not the disturbance from outside going into the power cable.

That is a fine power cable. I use the same method for making my interconnect cables. I connect one wire of Mogami 2549 twisted pair to plus and the other wire to the return. I connect the shield to the return at the source end and float the other end.

Hi Tharbamar :) Im your huge fan from Poland. I made a lot od DIY cables because of you. I now want to make this power cable and have question. You said that this cable is made for transports, dacs etc. But what about power amps, mono blocks ? It can be safely use to power amps without risk of overheat? In other video you made AC from 3104 but using all 4 wires but without shielding - which one is better?

Only the cleaned roots of the wire must be soldered with Kester 63/37 type solder - otherwise they will begin to crumble from the clamping screws.

The missus said to me the other day "you spend over £1,000 on speaker cables because you can 'hear the difference' but you can hear me calling you from the kitchen" lol I viewed one of your other cable videos and I asked about the shielding and you were kind enough to send me this link so thank but I think it's a little late for me considering I've already purchased all of my expensive shielded speaker cables and yes I'm one of those idiots who does the research after they purchase there equipment! 🙄 BTW. I want to make new power cables for amplifier, pre-amplifier, 4k BluRay player, CD player, TV and anything else in my home theatre. I see you use 2 conductors from Mogami 3104 wire plus a new ground wire and twist these together. If I want to end up with a 4 foot power cord how long do I cut the Mogami 3104 wire? How much length can I expect to loose when twisting the cables together? If money was no object I would build the Oyaide cables you built in another video. These look more in line with my budget. Thanks for the video, your opinions are appreciated.

The Ferrit Core often results in problems with the Sound Quality. I would not use it for my Cables.

If you are going to do this is the U.S., please use Green for POSITIVE, White or White w Green Stripe for Neutral, and Black for Ground. That is NEC spec.

Sound is richer, PS Audio AC5 with my Aquarius R2R DAC sound brighter than with my DIY cords, AC12 and my DIY cables are about the the same but AC12 is slightly quieter, Now I’m using AC12 with amplifier and rest of the components with DIY shielded power cables, thanks

Looking for advice from anyone still looking at comments for this. I want to make something similar but can't afford the Mogami speaker wire. Can I use any OFC copper cable of 12AWG/4mm2 and the pvc cover it comes with won't be a danger in terms of a fire hazard assuming correct fuse in? UK 230V. Was looking at usual Amazon offerings such as KabelDirekt etc. And if not and I use standard annealed copper not OFC basic mains cabling will I lose something in terms of quality?

Australia has specific color coding for power cables. Actually certified electrician only can wire such cables in Oz. For good reasons. You can also use higher grade Furutech terminals. And double or triple wrap with shielding... will make another degree of improvement.

Yes, here in the US, Black = HOT, White = NEUTRAL, Green = GROUND but since I’m not selling it can be anything for personal uses. I’ve tried many different shielding up to 4 layers using aluminum foil, copper tape as well as each individual conductor shielding there is no difference in audible noise improvement, my power cord is absolutely quiet even when I raise volume knob to max level on class D amplifier, there will no hiss or white noise. This particular cable is designed to use with digital components by lifting shield ground on component side and drained on wall side but still it can be use with other type of components.

iId never use speaker cable for mains, the other way round is perfectly fine. The insulation of a speaker cable is sub 50V as such running this on a beefy power amplifier wouldn't go well.

I’ve been using them so long in pro and home audio with not a single issue. Ul13 CL2 Rating and withstand to 500v. Also note most ultra high current amps are wired with very same cable inside.

Excellent review. I find that sometimes using an shielding can negatively affect sound quality. If main cable has significant noise then it will capture that noise. Have you tested with and without shielding?

Grounding at one end allows the shield conductor to act as an antenna and shunt any noise to a dingle ground reference. Too many paths to ground can cause ground loop hum.

j watched your video and j also made diy project of power cable -it is shielded model but j didnt use ferite noise filter on the end -recently j started using ferite beads on the entrance of powerd cable of amplifier j noticed difference can you explaine from your point using noise filter on this power cable and what are benefits in sound by your oppininion

Basically when current/signal passes through the cable also carries noise as well and magnetic field generates throughout the cable. The magnetic field is absorbed by the ferrite core and the noise current is reduced with the help of ferrite core.

Funny, the power supply in my amplifier filters out any noise…. Suppose you have a noisy power supply, than a good cable won’ t help. I don’ t agree with the usefulness of this cable, but you are very good in doing a presentation. A more interesting topic would be to prevent ground loops. Ground loops are very common when you have connected more grounded apparatus to your amp. It gives an annoying mains-frequency noise in your speakers. The solution is to not ground your amplifier via the mains cord so don’t connect the ground in your cable at the amp side. (or safer: use an isolating transformer)

Have you ever looked at the line of Viborg connectors and accessories on Amazon, Steve? Really good stuff at good prices! Stuff that competes with the best connectors out there. I own several of their AC and IEC plugs, binding posts, RCA jacks and spades. Good stuff that makes a big difference.

Go straight to aliexpress monosaudio iec pure copper gold plated decent good as viborg.Xangsane 6 core 1.5 silver plate occ copper probably best cable you can get double shielded round a solid core inner.sound amazing with a silver fuse wire fuse.made more difference to my system then any other cable that and better op amp best upgrade ive done.

I thought the drain wire should have constant contact along the shield, otherwise as shown in this case you will make kind of a ground loop? Any thoughts?

Hi there is no drain wire, only the shield is drain on wall side by connecting to ground pin and lifted on component side better shielding, there is no ground loop when ground wire is connected to the both ends. Thanks

I have got IEC connectors that are marked 125 volt 15 Amp is it OK to use these in the UK for amps CD player and power supplies all for Hi Fi. The ones shown on the Ad on eBay were marked 125 to 240 volt. Will it be safe to use these?

Audiophile Grade AC - jeeez !!! How can someone think that the power need to be protected or filtered or modified in any way for HIFI, because you might hear the difference ? You can see many very good power amp even without rectification !!! You have to avoid gound loops and thats all. The mains are "travelling" to you hundred/thousand of miles in the air, under the ground, inside the wall, and that last meter "Hifi Grade Power Cable" really won't do nothing to it. But it can harm your purse very badly. Very sad to see when a clever guy propagate such obvious hype and cheating. It's a rip-off as many other Hifi equipment. Hifi Business is a very nice target of hypes and mysteryes and miracles and nonsense devices contradicting the laws of physics. They are all very expensive for silly and snob but rich people. Please keep comparing speakers, amplifiers, or whatever that counts, but not power cable and "Hifi Tables" and "HiFi Pads" and "Hifi AC Power Strips" and "Power Cables" and such cheatings.

For your information, filter circuits, active or passive, are the most common most cheap and most simple elemenst of electronic devices. The cost is few $. Do you really believe, when you buy an amplifier for $2000, those hifi and electric engineers who made that, they can't put $2 value filters in your device as many as they want and anywhere as the want if necessary ? They give you a sh...t product for $2000 because they are not professional, they don't understand how the mains work ? You think your merchans will solve that engineering problem with their "special" and "little overpriced" stuff ? Do you shield your cable with breaded copper although it wasn't shielded to that point from the powerplant to your amplifier. You wanna shield the last 3 meters from 1000 miles to make a miracle device ? Above cable 3m : ~ US$ 160. Your amplifier power cable is free, it comes with cable, the $2000 price included the power cable already.

@@telelaci2 I'd understood it's more about protecting the other low voltage cables (e.g. Interconnects and speaker) running behind your system from the EMI noise generated by the mains cable. So shielding is key, rather than super thick or fancy conductors

@@dalevearncombe9672 If that would be a problem, then the electric engineers would simply move the mains to a new position far from other cables. (its not near anyway) IF that could be an issue, they would do that. They would be able to do that, they are engineers, designers, professionals, they know how to design an amplifier, trust them. Btw other low level signal cables are shielded ! Not the mains but the L and R audio. Shielding the mains is very silly idea. Maybe silly is an improper word, because it has its purpose, it's a nice rip off.

@@TechStuff365 Hi John, you just ignore what I said about the mains. It comes from a power plant hundreds of kilometers far away. Via many kind of devices, transformators, switches and at last it reaches your house. The electricity is propagated with the speed of light, so despite of the 1000km it's there in an eyewink, let's say 0.003 second. Inside your house the wire goes inside the wall, it's a simple industrial and cheap copper wire in the best case, nothing special. What can a "high quality" cable improve on that on the last meter ? Use your common sense. The other 1000km long wire's quality doesn't count only and exclusively that last meter will ruin the amplifier's capabilities ? These fancy cables are nothing else but, thick copper wires assembled with high quality plastic insulations and parts, and very beautiful colors, really demanding products. Price is set if it was from solid gold, not plastic and copper. But what is the purpose, 1000km wire's quality is random, sometimes bad, and the last one is good ? Hows that ? And by the way there is no limited budget for the cable, because it's not an expensive part. They make it expensive, because they can sell the snake oil, so why not ? Free money from the snob pigeons.

A 7 amp (not 5 but more) rated wire is 22 AWG (at max 47kHz). Most of ethernet cable's size is 22...23 AWG, that is the size of 7 amp rated cable. Everybody knows how thin an ethernet cable is, you just have to check the glassy RJ45 connector. That is the thickness of a the power cable you get, it's your statement. And you think that when you buy a $2000 Power Amplifier, it comes with crap cable, because the electric engineers who designed that amplifier couldn't calculate the proper amps and they will give you a cheap unusable budget thing for the money, not even copper. But you know it better than those engineers. They don't want to give you a good product, they have no competition, you can buy only their amplifier, no choice. No capitalism, no competition. They will save $10 on the power cable and they will live like a happy fish in the water. I think the opposite. Not the power amplifier manufactuers ripp you off with a cheap cable, but the oil snake manufacturers ripp you off with an $500 cable. But: "...its very unlikely there will be poor cables in that chain..." - when you are talking about the 1000miles, so you think every cable piece is good quality except the one that you get with the amplifier. How logical is this ? And by the way the HiFi's problem is only the undersized cable that is heating up ? Your statements are not very well based, I don't want to argue with it. If you believe in this I don't want to change your opinion, it's fine by me.

You have to be careful using different types of metals you can get galvanic corrosion it should always be the same socket to plug material Not really a suppressor innocence a emi / rf rejection and it's not going to do much like that and could be unbeneficial you could put a suppressor on the end between live and neutral of (x2) capacity of 1uF 400v be more beneficial that will filter out any digital high frequency noise. Try not wind it so tight either the wires every 2" enough, you just increasing the length of resistance of the wire try and get the total length of the whole wire to half a metre including the wind. The dielectrics of the plastic is not good either it's not PTFE? You could rip off the outer shielding would be better can replace it with PTFE plumbers tape 4 coatings forward and back, don't go to tight. If you leave a bit of the plastic sheaf on one end stop it fraying pull the rest of the cable sheaf halfway down cover half the wire that's bare with the teflon PTFE plumbers tape, and do the same on the other side. oh and spray the wires first before putting on the PTFE tape with a silicone lubricant drenched the wire

So... You make such cable.. You pay like 50+ $ for power plugs, for OFC wires, shielding... Then YOU PLUG IT into your most basic house power socket, cheapest cables inside/behind the walls, via most basic fuse contacts... How does 1.5m cable like this can cancel all the other bad things that go along with the home or even worse building installation???

I have a question: Is the Mogami 3104 insulation rated to withstand AC current in all countries? It is not a AC power cable, it is for speakers operating on DC. Your explanation please?

AC or DC current is current, As per Ohm law 1V AC = 1V DC and W3104 is ratted for 500v DC.

@@Tharbamar Thanks, should be perfectly fine I guess. Question is, will an insurance company accept a claim involving Mogami 3104? It is a cable not legally rated as a AC power cable. I checked with my local Australian Hifi supplier and they said NO. Even Furutech hifi bulk 'power cable' does not have the legal blessing in Australia. Besides unless one is a qualified electrician here, we cannot even put a plug on a power cable! I am not complaining, but merely pointing out the issues that one has to consider. Something that can be perfectly good and fine may not stack up legally and have an inherent risk attached to it.

@@Tharbamar Just to add that, here in Australia, all electrical cables need to be certified by Australian Electrical Standards and test tagged. So Mogami 3104 speaker cable will be illegal here. Problem is, even if someone makes it with 3104 and it works fine, you are still breaking the law here! Must be the same in many other countries too. Thank you for sharing wonderful information but although "easy to DIY power cords" viewers should know the legalities. Cheers.

This is the sort of practical handyman work that should be taught as part of a public educational curriculum. DIY AC cords, publicly advocated, what could go wrong? Also, have you identified the problem you are trying to fix? while I recognize the craftsmanship involved and the clear purpose of the video, I would never substitute a professional safety laboratory approved AC power cord for something without a tested assurance of fire safety , unless I wanted to unplug it every time it wasn't in use. without taking sides , the idea of audible benefits in this way is controversial, and that fact alone , to me, makes the risk of homemade power connectors unacceptable. and probably uninsurable.

Say what Willis? Most components run on DC, not ac. Whatever ac comes in is filtered internally and converted to dc. If ac affected the sound or "performance" of any component. Then that manufacturer would include beefy power cables. But they don't. Smarter people have determined that "Standard" ac wall plug cable is sufficient to power a unit. But, if you think it does, well.....good for you. You just bought something useless to brag about to others who don't know any better either.

Thank you, I was a union electrician for 40 yrs and started in electronics in H.S. I've been trying to explain the AC power at the end of a power cord is EXACTLY the same unless your cord is defective or too small a gauge. And you are correct, the first thing in audio gear is a power supply which changes the internal voltage and filters the DC. The current draw of say a pre-amp is sooo small the cord can be very small gauge. They are very pretty cords tho.
