This method looks so easy! I’m eager to try this, because I certainly have lots of fabric to use for these. (Don’t we all?) Thank you so much for this tutorial.
What a neat idea!! Thanks so much for sharing! For the casing .. in order to reduce some steps .. it would also be easier to just iron quarter of an inch on both sides (top & bottom) & directly sew it on to the bag (instead of making an entire casing first, then sewing it on)
Thanks! I guess different people find different things easier! I sewed the casing together to avoid ironing like that 😂 I find it a bit fiddly. Different strokes for different folks as they say! Use whatever makes it faster for you!
Stumbled upon your RU-vid when I was trying to find gift bag ideas that were an upgrade from the sack style. This is the perfect solution. I “whipped” up a bunch using odds and ends from my stash. Thank you!
This is 100% easier than sewing the drawstring slot into the fabric. I have been looking for something to give me that ruffle at the top with an easier draw slot. Love this and I'm going to try it. I started using fabric reusable bags for advent calendars. Now, it makes so much more sense to use it for everything! I'm taking the extra time and fabric to make mine lined in hoping it lasts longer. I'm not sure it matters at this point. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm so glad I happened across this video!
Thanks! So glad you liked it! I love these bags and often get folk asking ‘do you want the bag back?’ when I give them a present and they seem happier when I say they can keep it than when they opened the present in the first place 😂
I have watched many video's, hunted and purchased patterns, and your video was the easiest to follow and I love the easy to follow steps. I only messed up once on my end, but that was due to me misunderstanding. But, it still worked out and the bag turned out so cute. I came up with this same idea just before Christmas, cause I wanted to stop spending money on paper, boxes and tissue and then storing it.
This is how I want to give all my gifts next year! I am the world's worst wrapper, but I can do this and everything will look so much better - I'm sure of it! Many thanks!
@@ScrapFabricLove I've made two bags in about two hours. Slow start, but I really love them and I know they are going to come in so handy for next year's Christmas wrapping. I don't even have to use tissue paper with these! Many thanks for the wonderfully easy to follow tutorial!
Yeah! Glad it helped. And you remind me of me starting this early for Christmas! People will scoff at us but we’ll be the calm organized ones come December!! Have fun!
Love this! I’ve made a lot of gift bags over the years, but this would be so much easier. You might consider investing in a bodkin..kind of like latching tweasers. It makes pulling the ribbon through so much faster. Also, I have added jingle bells to the end of the ribbons just because I like jingle bells 😊
Love the Purple Thang also. It is flexible and inexpensive. You can use one end to pull the ribbon though and the other end you can use to push out the corners when you turn something inside out.
Really enjoy your video.. I love sewing. Love the fact there isn’t any measurements I am not very good went it comes to measuring.. I will try and give it a go and send you a picture of the final product. Thanks again
it's amazing how many ways a simple bag like this can be made! Thanks for your version that does seem very fast. I think I will use my serger to sew the "L" seam at the end. Thank You Kristen!
thank you, Thank You THANK YOU! I whipped one up in 20 min & will be using your tutorial for my gifts this year! SO much easier than other drawstring bag tutorials
Night before Christmas eve and decided to make bags. Yes! I made one of your bags yay! Just had to let you know! Hate wrapping too. I am a lefty. Measuring, and straight stitches are such a pain! Heck I cant even hang a picture straight! 😊. Loved your video and subscribed.
Love , love , love this. I love that it’s not fussy but has amazing results. I don’t always follow patterns precisely. Often the seam allowance is whatever lines up with my presser foot. I have made drawstring bags before using a similar version of this method but it has been some time. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! You have me as a new subscriber. I hate messing around with fiddling on measuring and pining and all the stuff sewing lovers do. This is perfect and I appreciate you for it!!
thank you very much, FYI you can use the chop stick the whole way, saving a few frustrations.........put ribbon in before sewing sides since the ends are not sewn.
Thanks for the quick easy (common sense/busy mum) tutorial. Also thanks for reusing shirts as I use what I have and sometimes feel a bit shy but seeing others doing the same is AWESOME - Nga mihi (thanks in Maori)
Thanks so much! So glad it was useful. And don’t ever be shy about reusing fabric! I’m embarrassed when I buy fabric new as I know there is absolutely no need but I still do it sometimes anyways….
I love that dachshund fabric. My sweet little sausage dog is 13 years old. Off topic... I'm cutting my squares for the weight loss quilt project. Circles and applique intimidate me, so I'm going to do corner triangles, lol.
What a fabulous idea, a great way to take a good idea and make it your own. Appliqué always intimidated me as well but I’ve just decided to give it a whirl
@@treyshields7848 glad you are going to give it a try! I love Nola’s idea too. Now though I am wondering which bits of using appliqué are worrying you guys? Maybe I can say more about it in a future video if needed.
@@ScrapFabricLove Kristen, I haven't had much success with applique, I don't control the pieces, I go along the edge, then run on the outside, then the inside. I'm just not able to control and keep the stitches right on the edge. If I practice more, I know it'll get better. I decided to take the easy way out with the corner triangle because I don't want to struggle with the pieces on a daily basis.
@@NolaTheAlamoChiliQueen ok gotcha! Thanks for replying to that. I really do love your triangle alternative- I think it will look brilliant. I’ll keep in mind what you said though when thinking about how I explain similar projects. You might prefer just quilting on your appliqué after using some fusible instead of doing it at the piecing stage. I’ve got a project in mind that is a bit like that for after the new year.
What a fabulous idea! I have been trying to reduce my use of single use items for years and this will be a wonderful addition to my list of ways to do that! Thank you. I love your videos, they inspire me. How is your food and exercise quilt going? Today is day 15 for me.
So glad you liked it. Weight loss quilt is going good! I’m planning a little update post soon. I have enough blocks to join two rows now! And I’ve amazingly lost over 10 pounds! I’m sure some of that was water weight at the beginning 😂 but it’s still encouraging! I’ll post that update this week or next!
Brilliant idea. I hate wrapping and it's so wasteful. This would also work great for children if you wanted to make them stocking shaped you could easily.
Great, easy way to make a drawstring bag. Especially for a beginner project. You could do french seams to hide the raw edges. You could also hand stitch a couple of stitches or machine stitch the drawstring at the mid-point in the casing. This would prevent the drawstring from being pulled out. The single piece of fabric and the single piece of casing on the outside is a great way of doing it and the extra drawstring makes a nice bow. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks! I am a press on nail addict as well as a quilting addict 😂. I think I had my Bernina 770 for that video but I have since traded it in. I have a Pfaff 720 now. (I have a post on my blog with that iron in it - just go to www.scrapfabriclove.con and search irons and it should come up! )
If I can ever get away with not measuring I absolutely will 😂! I think I got that fabric from an eBay haul so unfortunately I don’t know the name of the fabric - sorry!
Thanks for your ideas. I always though the selvage edge acted differently when washing the fabric. Is that not a problem? I guess unless the recipient doesn't wash the bag it's ok?
I think the worst it might do is fray a bit but honestly I don’t think many people wash these. I mean of course you could but I have never felt the need.
A wonderful woman from Alabama makes all her quilts from men's shirts she buys at thrift ships. She has videos on how to get the most yardage from shirts. Her RU-vid channel is Catbird Quilts.
