Great job! As a steam fitter I have a couple of recommendations to improve your efficiency and safety. If you prefer to use a hot water tank you must replace the temperature and pressure relief valve with a 30 psi pressure relief valve. Using a tank in a closed loop heating system is very dangerous, you are essentially making a bomb. My second suggestion is to get rid of the tank completely and use the elements without the tank. You can cut your power consumption by not heating only the water used for heating not storing. Take a 12 inch piece of 2inch pipe, put a 2x2x1 inch tee on each end. Using a bushing install your elements in each end and connect the supply and return to the 1 inch branches. Now you are only heating the water you are using. I heat my 50 x 30 shop for about $2.00 a day. Todays high is -32C. I tried going to a larger tank and it just cost me more money. I have been feeling my system for the past 9 years and have more plans.

Can you explain your set up again? Not sure I follow. Are you talking about using an exchanger?
@davemeise2192
@davemeise2192 Год назад
Rivstr, you are completely correct about the temperature and pressure relief valve. They must be changed so one doesn't blow the pex lines or anything else if something goes wrong. I like your idea of a 12 inch piece of 2 inch pipe for heating the water. Kind of like the heater in many hot tubs. They easily heat a hot tub to 104 degrees. When I used to work on them they were rated at anywhere from 2 KW to 5KW heating elements. Coincidentally domestic water heating elements are rated from 3 KW to 5.5 KW. A water tank heating element system you've described could easily be used. Because it would be a closed loop system, a larger thermal expansion tank would avoid pressure build ups so it should work fine.
@mikecallan8346
@mikecallan8346 Год назад
@Rivstr. Have you built the heating unit you speak of? If so I would love to see a video on your system. Sounds much cheaper than buying an on demand heater and much cheaper than heating 40 plus gallons of glycol mix while sitting idle.

Can someone explain why its dangerous to heat water in a closed tank for space heating, but it's not dangerous to heat water in a closed tank for domestic hot water? Wouldn't the T&P relief valve still open before any explosion? That being said, yes I would replace the T&P with a boiler relief valve since there's no reason to have high pressure in the space heating system.

I do have an auto fill and air bleeder... (I can also heat the system with hot water generated from a wood stove pipe) cost about $30 a month extra to heat a 16 x 32 slab (3 sided) porch to 68F... in PA, USA...

Thanks for the explanation and demonstration. I did the same for my front and parking-side sidewalks only I used on demand water heaters for space ( I don't have a garage or basement to put tanks in). Because they are also electric, I run them with a choice relay that does not allow them to both be on simultaneously. Works great. One question for you. Do you find a fairly uniform flow from the use of your copper headers? I was not sure about this and ran a continuous closed-loop to cover the area. So it takes a little longer to heat the last few yards of sidewalk but the first few (farthest from the house) heat up very fast and stays warm for hours after it is shut down.

Thank you so much for this! There is no other video, instruction, or testimony, ANYWHERE on the internet (that I have found) explaining simple, affordable, in-floor hydronics using an ordinary, tank type, water heater....I've searched far and wide. This is going to sound a little bitter but in my opinion the web is inundated with far too many people plugging THEIR products and systems and denouncing all others. Plenty of arrogant naysayers explaining why this system simply can't work and proving so with all kinds of formulas, calculations and technical BS. that most of us can't wrap our heads around. And please don't get me started on the green building circles(bless their hearts). Then along comes "This Guy" from North Dakota, where the ground can freeze as hard as concrete six feet down, and there's nothing to stop that N wind but telephone posts. I can't imagine the heat loss in THAT slab! Kudos to you sir, and thank you for setting this straight!

I heat water with excess PV solar efficiently (not like the clueless on youtube) and am thinking of doing this to add a little heat to the camp. I've collected a few old water heaters and have this warning. Feed the cold water into the bottom of the tank where the drain valve is. There is an internal plastic tube that sends the cold to the bottom of the tank that tends to break off and water just circulates at the top. A couple tanks I have are that way, replaced because the people ran out of hot water quickly. I would also remove the check valves that restrict flow.

A fine vejo of a DIY radiant set up. Good on ya. I would go with propane because everything I have that can be LP is LP. Couple things for all the woodpeckers. When I'm elbow deep in hemi guts on a winter night I don't like tending a woodstove. I'm in the garage to do stuff besides feed the beast. I am also partial to setting a t stat and not shedding clothes because too hot or looking for my hoodie because too cold. I have a saying. It's your soap and your John Thomas. Not my business how you wash it.

Floor sensing thermostat is key. I keep floor at 23c ambient at 14c (so when your working you don't overheat yourself) and keeps my 22x22x14 high vault at about 14c when -15c out. Downside is slow recovery on big door opening so i have an electric fan that kicks in when temp dips below 10c to bring room temp up nice.

@teejay622 5 лет назад
Hey mitch, this surprises me about your "slow recovery". The greatest thing I love about my radiant floor heat in my shop is how fast it recovers after we "remove a wall" to pull a vehicle in or out. The old forced air system seemed to take forever.

Thanks for sharing this I really appreciate it. You should seriously consider changing that exposed romex cable over to something like armored (flex) cable. Or at the very least you should put some kind of strain relief on those so the plastic coating doesn't rub right against the bare metal edges of the holes in your pump and water heater. for safety.

If you use a solar water heater for the main source of heat I would have a 40 or 50 gallon water heater as a storage unit that has had several inches of insulation added to the outside of it. Unless you are in Canada it might even work out using electric, or maybe using one of the heat pump water heaters.

Should have a check valve on the discharge side to prevent back flow and gravity rise of hot water over cold water.

Do you have a check valve in line anywhere? Is a pressure tank necessary for same floor heating?

Rick Holtti that’s an expansion tank when water is heated in a sealed system like that you have to have a place for the water to expand to so it is required.

So you mentioned something alomg lines of filling the system and running pump getting up to a certain amount of pressure. Cant i just fill the system until doesnt hold anymore and all air is out and then plug it in and let her rip?

The water expands when heated so you need the expansion tank and system pressure should not exceed the rated pressure of expansion tank. Typical is 12-15 pounds. If pressure gets to high then relief valve opens and dumps water out to reduce back to system pressure. Relief valves are usually rated at 30 psi

I have a brand new system. 7 loops of 300 feet each. One zone. I want to use a new hot water tank instead of boiler. My house is 1990 sqft one level. I'm wondering how big a water heater to use and how big a pump to use. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

John Crossley That is about the size of my folks house. He heats his basement with a 30 gallon I think. I believe you can see what it is in my video about it. The link is in the discription box below this video or click this link here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_DgU5fYN25g.html

I dont understand how the hex lines heat the floor. I live in Southern Cal so our knowledge is limited on floor warming sytems . My garage floor gets very cold at times and I have an extra/used functioning water heater at my disposal. Thx, Gerry from San Diego, CA

The hot water created by the tank circulates through the pex lines under the garage floor, typically about 4" of foam under the pipes and 4" of cocrete as garage floor. If you can get your outlet water up to 120 degrees you can achieve 70-80 degree floor temp

You did not mention a mixing valve. Are you running the 110 deg water directly into a cold slab? I thought the theory of operation was to circulate water that is just a little bit warmer than ambient so as to slowly warm up the slab. If you were to turn this off in winter at 30 deg, and then turn it on and circulate 110 deg water it seems like it would shock the slab.

There really isn't a way to "shock" a slab. It's a giant slab of concrete weighing God knows what. Why would you ever turn this off in winter anyways? Usually you would turn this system on Nov 1 and run it until the outside temperature stays above 32 deg at night in like March. All conventional boilers send instant 100 deg water through the floor. If you send like 60 deg water through the floor it would be waay too cold coming out the other end. Even with 100 deg water the water coming out the other side is like 40 deg. This system almost directly emulates what a boiler would do. The only difference with this system the floor circulation pump quits from time to time when the temp is warm enough, which you could argue actually makes more sense because then you are not running your circulation pump unnecessarily, cycling cold water though the floor.
