Sometimes I feel like Chef John is a culinary werewolf, and every full moon he has to make something that looks *kinda* like it came out of a seventies dinner party. ...okay time to stop kidding myself, I'd absolutely have those.
Halfway through this, I realized that we have a cast iron cornbread mold/pan that makes 7 cob-shaped mini loaves. I'm now committed to using that to enclose hot dogs cut in half to get even closer to the mall corn dog experience! Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm making these because I'm bummed at not be able to go to the fairs this year. I rarely had them at the fairs, but that's beside the point. I'd even eat a deep fried Twinkie at this stage.
Love the phrase "mix this with reckless abandon." Like several of your recipes, this one has now been saved into the appropriate folder, and will be made!
I have been making these for years. After I remove them from pans I brush them with olive oil and put the back in the to get crunchy. You can also do this on a pan on the stove.
This reminds me of a sandwich that was from a road side restaurant down in N.C. called “pig in a pup”. It was pulled pork inside a bun sized hush puppy. The trick being to make the hush puppy hold its bun shape and not fall apart
Already baked this with little twist recipe and turn out so good! So here’s my modification recipe : 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup cornmeal (im using smooth cornmeal) 1 1/2 cup milk Plain yoghurt around 3 tbsp Oregano (as u like) Chopped onion ( 2 tbsp ) Garlic (1 tsp ) And the rest is same 😁 Before that im soaked cornmeal into my millk around 5 mins then u just adding the rest 😊 Thank you for this recipe cheff john always love ur recipes
This recipe is exactly for me. You are a genius. I don't like fried foods. I am afraid to cook with oil due to a past experience. I have an electric cupcake baker and I made corn muffin turkey hot dogs today. I made 10 muffins. I ate four or five. I shared with my dog he likes turkey dogs and he enjoyed pieces of corn muffin. I used Betty Crocker corn muffin mix. Very easy. My muffins were baked in 12 minutes. I didn't even have to turn on the oven.😊
Oh I'm definitely going to make these. I love homemade corn dogs and I like this method because it doesn't involve the mess and hassle of deep frying. I'm gonna make a spicy version with hot links and chopped roasted jalapenos in the batter too. Another version I'll add honey to the batter for that state fair flavor. Thanks for a great, simple and inexpensive recipe and cooking method!
I love how much you like county/state fairs!!!!! I’ve gone to the fair for my birthday every year since I was a kid. So sad I can’t this year.😢. Thank you for all you do, and I’ve already made your lemonade!! Unbelievable!! It’s like I was there!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥳
Food Wishes. Sir, 'you have the Very Best Cooking Show around. Your Hummer is Top Notch. Thank you very much for sharing your Knowledge with me and the entire World. I do hope you keep doing this.
Just made these the other day for my husband's YOYO (Your On Your Own) lunches - mistakenly used a regular sized muffin pan - still so good and easy to heat up for a quick lunch. We both enjoyed them! I'll add more hot dog to the regular sized next time. Thanks for the recipe, and thanks for always giving us a laugh along with instruction.
Yummy, Chef John!!! I'm seeing those with darkly cooked bacon bits and/or some slightly blackened onions minced finely and tossed into the batter? A little smokey flavor accent?
@@caseysmith1718 Boom! 👊 Totally forgot that one. My bad! 😣 😎 🤣 Stay safe and well, to you and yours, from your fellow MAJOR FOODIE and eternal sister in Christ somewhere near Seattle and around the World, ok? 🙏❤🙏
Man, this brings me back to college. One of my staple foods was "hot dogs cut into pieces and baked inside cheap store brand canned biscuits with a squirt of mustard". They were usually underdone and slightly raw in the middle due to the hot dog moisture and my impatience with cooking. Man I miss those.
You could call them Belly Button Corn Dogs. I just watched a TV recipe by Pati Jinich for Mexican belly button soup, where the creamy smooth pinto bean based soup had large round dumplings with a depression in them like a belly button that caught some of the soup, it looked comforting.
Good call on the mustard, Chef John. According to Dirty Harry, life long hot dog aficionado, "Nobody, I mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog." - Sudden Impact (1983) - Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan
This video is going straight to the living museum of Classic Chef John Comedy Central (or CCJCC as we call it at home... naaa, it's just me... ok, I just made that up but the funniness triggered this suddent surge of creativity, you asked for it! :S )
I have my niece and nephew tomorrow. I was wondering what I should make them for dinner. And boom, Chef John saves the day once again! (Gonna make an extra tray of these for myself to enjoy as well)
Not until my nephews showed me had I ever hear of ketchup with hot dogs. Over the years, I've found ketchup can work well if it were slightly mixed with mustard such as having the two condiments side by side that way you can get mustard and ketchup in each bit; but, if you have savory hot dogs like Sabrett hot dogs, the sweetness of the ketchup helps balance out the spiciness of the hot dog.
Corn dogs are one of the few things I actually enjoy ketchup on, and probably my favorite food at the fair. I will be making these for sure. It just so happens that I picked up some cornmeal as well for some fried green tomatoes, and I think both things will go great together
Chef John, very innovative technique, never seen it before, but they look good. I think i will use the little boxes of Jiffy sweet corn muffin mix with some real honey stirred in for the batter, & another thing, i have a muffin pan with deeper cup wells, so i'm betting cocktail weinies will work, & i won't have to slice, quicker, & young grand daughters will like them.
Next time try adding a few tablespoons of finely diced onions instead of the vinegar. The taste pairs well but also adds to the moisture of the batter. It cuts down on what can be a bit of a greasy and grainy bite when you add meats to the batter.
Love this idea, gotta give it a try! As for the sauce, I find that a classic burger sauce (without the relish) does best, though a fry sauce will work in a pinch...
Is anyone here familiar with 'Pronto Pups ' from Camden Park?? You get to watch them batter up then fry them...its worth the admission price and the really thrilling (and most of the thrill comes from the concrete block counterbalance of "The Big Dipper" tracks that's not so hidden behind the odd placed board fence) reward of living through the rides with these!! Aww...Good times
Thank you so much for another fun video! As you were contemplating dipping options, a thought entered my awareness: “these would be great dipped into “taramasalata”.” I’ll let you know what results. Tastes are so different (as you demonstrated) Cheers! ⬛️
Totally making these and probably today! My boys love corn dogs but I hate buying them. Thanks again, Chef!! Ps- Hope you're starting to clear out down there. Seeing our first blue skies in almost two weeks and actual rain up here in the Willamette Valley!
