I've been on a quest to get healthier since 2005 and, for me, part of that has meant reducing my synthetic chemical exposure. In 2011 & 2012, I really dove in and started making many of my own products (personal care, cleaning etc.). This lead me to discovering the world of essential oils.
In this video, I show how easy it is to make your own foaming hand soap. I am a detail person and sometimes read PubMed for fun. Don't like details, then move along. There are now thousands of other people with short videos about mixing your own foaming soap. I don't have time for haters.
At the time this video was created (2012), foaming soap was still a new thing. It was incredibly difficult to find a glass foaming soap dispenser anywhere. Everything was plastic. I knew there were others, just like me, looking for different options. Now foaming glass dispensers are all over the place!
In fact, feel free to add a link to your favorite foaming dispenser in the comments. As of 2020, I am still using 2 of the original 3 foaming dispensers that I purchased, so it was a good buy.
Now, you can even find the foaming pump mechanism by itself and create your own with a glass mason jar. Fun for the true DIYer!
The gist is that I love using essential oils in any and every way that I can. They have literally changed my life. Pure & potent, smells divine and they are good for me! What's not to like?
If you enjoyed this video, you can watch the short follow up video that discusses ways to add more moisturizing to your foaming hand soap recipes. • Moisturizing Additives...

You could also repurpose a mason jar. Cut a hole in the lid bend back the metal to make it big enough for the dispenser and hot glue it one underneath. Works great and you have a glass container.

You can also use a mason jar and cut a hole in the lid for the foaming pump that you get from an old soap bottle

+Dance to express That's a great idea. Reusing is always good! I have not looked recently, but at the time no one was selling just the foaming pumps through places that sell supplies for making your own stuff. It may be now that you can get just the foaming pumper. If so then awesome, makes the mason jar an excellent idea. I just did not want to buy the entire plastic set to just get the pumper. I've also seen just using a regular pump without the foamer and still using less soap and more water. It squirts out more watery, but it is easy enough and actually creates less gunk build up on the spout. Thanks for your suggestion! Especially, since these glass pumps in the video are no longer available.

I found foaming pumps on Amazon ($6 for two pumps) that fit regular mason jars and I found the mason jars at the thrift store for 25 cents each. I made four foaming dispensers for $13.

Talking wiry chemists they say do the Castile and the carrier oil first and agitate til it looks milky. Then add essential oils. The carrier oil will assist with the essential oil breaking down plastic. Then add water. Your video was helpful.
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 4 года назад
Yes, you are correct. I have found over time that this is really the best way. If you aren't careful it can get too sudsy. If using distilled water from a jug it should be fine, but if someone fills it up from the faucet with the soap already in the container it will make a lot of bubbles. Thanks for watching & commenting!

What you said about using distilled water only is right but bear in mind that essential oils are also antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral. They act as a natural preservative in your homemade products as well.
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 6 лет назад
Yes, this is true. For my hand soap now I don't use distilled water. I go through it pretty quickly and have no concerns about it going bad. If I am making other items that need a longer shelf life however, I still am more careful about contamination. Without all of the professional synthetic preservatives homemade stuff can sometimes go bad. But avoiding all that yuckiness is why I got into oils in the first place. Thanks for your comment!

I found on Amazon just the lids that fits in a mason jar. You'd be using the glass Mason jar and screw it on and it's a foamer lid too.

Doesn't the essential oil just float to the top? I make my own aftershave, and I always have to shake it before hand to mix the oils in.
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 4 года назад
It mixes a little better, because of the soap content, but if you just add essential oils and water it definitely doesn't mix. I have not made aftershave. Is it mostly water? Witch-hazel? Usually when adding to water I add the essential oils to a bit of sea salt first and then the water. Helps it mix/disperse. Same with an Epsom Salts bath. Sea Salt might hurt in aftershave (ouch!!), but maybe a small amount of Epsom Salts? It is basically magnesium sulfate and is healing. Or if it is a small enough amount of sea salt it might not matter? I don't really know. Just an idea if you are up for experimenting. Thanks for watching & commenting.

I was just about to comment about plastic right as you said “but-“. Lol. Since essential oils do degrade them anything containing them should be in glass but honestly those plastic bottles with the homemade soap is still probably a lot safer than some soaps sold on the market today with all the chemicals and chemical exposure they’ve gotten. Not to mention the cost to the environment producing just one plastic bottle takes. For anyone who doesn’t know, they sell a lot of very very affordable soap dispensers on amazon. Foaming ones usually aren’t anymore expensive. If they are it’s usually by a few cents.

I was wondering if the soap has more of a lubricated feel as opposed to a dry feel since you are using essential oils as well as the Dr Bronners which is oil based. Some foam soaps have a really dry feel and makes it feel like it is not getting clean.

Hi I followed your instructions very closely but my hand soab was runny not thick. I used distiled water lavender castile soap and avocado oils . Am I missing any ingriedient? Maybe I should add glycirin?
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 6 лет назад
Hi John, sorry I missed your post way back when. This is a very thin concoction. The foaming mechanism makes it so you do not need really thick liquid soap. Just a little goes a long way. I even use this thinner version in my normal dispensers when needed, just know that it shoots out fast and thin if you don't use a foamer. You can add a little oil or glycerin for moisturizing purposes, but you have to be careful. Too much will be oily or sticky and not cleansing. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Britney Becker Thanks for the compliment. I looked into making a mason jar soap pump, but I could not find decent foaming soap pumps sold individually at the time. That might have changed by now. But a little secret, you can water down your soap, add essential oils etc. and use it in a regular pump. It doesn't come out the same, but still works just fine once you get the hang of it. A little soap goes a long way!

I love your video. I found it after I decided to learn how to make my own foaming soap. Where do you get the soap you use? I also need to research essential oils and the different scents I would like to try. I would like to try some kind of citrus and sage combination. Or something with vanilla. What are your favorite scents?
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 5 лет назад
Hi Richard! You can find liquid castile soap in the laundry/soap section in some stores or at a health food store. Definitely online. I use Dr. Bronner's. There are other brands, but this is the most popular/common. As for scents, I use dōTERRA essential oils and often use their OnGuard blend. Smells like the holidays to me and is anti-microbial/anti-bacterial (in fact since I made this video they've come out with their own soap! I still make mine). OnGuard has Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. Right now I have a blend of evergreen trees in my bathroom soap. I find that I use rosemary, basil and/or peppermint often. Experimenting is fun way to see what you like.

@@AndreaCrisp I'm at Wal-Mart looking for unscented soap. They have Dr. Bronners but it's not unscented. Lol. So I'm trying some cheap stuff that doesn't have much of a scent. It doesn't say it has any particular scent but the ingredients says "fragrance." And I got some cheap essential oils too, just too experiment with until I know what I'm doing. I got lemon and rosemary. I'm checking out now and going home to make some soap.
@AndreaCrisp

@@ToxikPizza yes, it can sometimes be difficult to find the unscented version, so sometimes I get Peppermint Dr. Bronner's etc and use it as the base for my mix/smell. Have fun experimenting. Let me know if you have any questions.

u dont need a binding agent to mix the oils and water ? or a preservative ?
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 8 лет назад
+Stacie Price If you were selling them professionally then yes, but for use at home not really. Essential oils volatile aromatic compounds and not the same as an oil like olive oil. They still don't mix in water the same as, well, water, but not as much of an issue as a true oil. I use it up before anything can go bad, plus essential oils are antimicrobial and I don't mind if it separates a bit. Nothing a good shake won't help!

I think using doterra oils makes it expensive. There's nothing wrong with using other oils, we aren't trying to cure anything, we just want to wash our hands. Any soap is antibacterial and /or antiviral. Now days with the covid virus the best thing is to wash our hands with dish soap, bcz the virus has a fatty outer ring, and dish soap dissolves fat.
@AndreaCrisp
@AndreaCrisp 4 года назад
Hi Joy, Thanks for watching & commenting. I always suggest people use the raw products with which they are comfortable. I have had some health concerns previously that lead me to limited my synthetic chemical exposure over the years. This means I prefer to use essential oils that I trust to not be adulterated. I am not using them just for the smell, but in other ways, so adding them to my soap isn't a monetary concern as I already have them in my home for other uses as well. As for dish soap dissolving fat. All soap dissolves fat based on the chemical properties (polarity) of soap. The combo of soap and water together will dissolve fat. So washing hands for the recommended 20 seconds with soap and water is what is needed. With COVID I have actually increased the amount of Castille soap that I add to my mix for this very reason, but not by much. Thanks for chiming in!
