Bill I’ve not read all comments but you certainly want to run a #4 guage wire to starter from solenoid! The load is all from starter and need to carry all the current/amps from starter to battery. That little #12 wire will melt if it hasn’t. I really like that someone on RU-vid is working on these 25-40hp vintage Johnson/Evinrudes! Good luck

I just bought a second 1956 30 hp Johnson with electric start my first one is 6 volt witch is what I like original but this one has a 12 volt but whoever did it put just black wires had to trace it down mark the end red and it has no connection where the gas hooked up to the motor just hoses put some fog oil in it pulled it over and it started I love it when that happens thanks for the videos

I guess I'm a dummy like you 🤷 I appreciate you going into detail and simplifying the whole modification, some of us take a little longer to learn then others; myself included. I have a renix-era Jeep Cherokee and the wiring is all kinds of fuckery on it.. AMC used too thin of wiring gauge and it's coming back 31 years later to bite me in the ass. Your video (combined with an inline fuse holder and some wiring out of my parts bin) saved me $173. I ordered a SPST 50 amp switch for $6 shipped to my door, and I'll be solving the no-start issue with my Jeep for $173 less then I was quoted by a shop. For those who are curious: my Jeep relies on a physical rod engaging with the ignition switch when turning the key. The process you have to go through when installing a new ignition switch is so over-complicated that simply installing a starter-solenoid bypass is 10000 times more simple. Before I'd turn the key to acc, normal. Turn it to run, everything is working fine. But try and crank it and the rod wasn't engaging at the right point to start it. Tried bending/extending and even making the rod shorter (I know this is technically the long way around the problem) to no avail. No crank unless I shorted the solenoid on the starter. Now thanks to your video I don't have to pop my hood in the (soon to be) 20 degree Michigan weather to start my Jeep and get home from work!

I was been tapping power to my starter to start my motor up and starve it of gas to shut it off I've not seen many videos with the 4 terminal solenoids manly with the 1 terminal solenoids i have the 4 terminal solenoid

2wires from switch to solenoid leave battery cable alone. Keep it plain and simple!!!Use the choke to turn it off!!!

With this set up and just a solenoid and no rectifier does it still charge your battery? Or have you been able to get lots of start ups out of this?

Best video thanks so much. However, I'm the %1who still needs to clarify something. So I have a VW Bus Camper. There's a known problem with them where they suddenly won't start. Due to the fact that a wire from the ignition has to travel 15 feet to start the vehicle. That wire as it ages gets problematic. SO, they sell something called a hard start relay. When hooked up to the starter and battery and cylinoid you now eliminate the problem. However, some guys still add a push button start in the engine bay like you are showing. That said, I bought a button. Hooked up 2 wires to it. NOW, do I hook one wire to the cylinoid power and one to the main battery power of the starter OR can I just hook one wire to the battery and one to the cylinoid?. I'm overcomplicating it but can you just clarify the placement of the 2 wires of the button. ( 1 wire to the cylinoid power and one to the battery power on the starter?. ) Thanks.

I have a 1955 25hp and by the choke there is a wire coming frome it that has been cut? There is also a wire that has been cut at the tiller where the fuel goes in? I wired it up like this and I still have nothing....

I know it's a bit late but that wire is massively undersized that's going to the starter pos.

Does anyone know how to illuminate a starter button. I have installed a new engine start button on my boat with led. So I've wired the poles on the switch 1=plus 2=switched live out to starter. 3=negative to light up the led. But if i connect the negative the led stays on. I only need the led to turn on when the ignition key has been turned on. To tell you ignition is on and press the button for the engine to start. Do i need to bring a switched live feed from the ignition key. Basically a positive feed is going into the switch from a live terminal. Thanks

I'm trying to rewire my lawn mower. I have basic knowledge at best. You're confusing the heck out of me. What switch you talking about ? I'm completely lost on the 2 small post on solenoid. On the big post I got one to battery the other to the starter. On small ones it don't matter which one I ground ,? The other goes to what switch ?

There is no videos out there on converting a pull start to a electric start!! But you can find a video on how build a bomb or rocket ship or electric powered dildo but no converting a pull start to a elec start smh
