Making a metal saw blade work with a Leatherman Wave to cut a bolt, copper pipe, and pvc pipe. This DIY EDC accessory stores neatly in the factory Leatherman sheath. It is a simple mod that works really well and greatly increases the capabilities of the multi tool.
18tpi blades work best
The rivet is necessary to keep the blade from pivoting upward when cutting. It allows you to focus on the sawing motion rather than trying to keep the tool clinched tight while sawing.
Cut the blade no longer than the length of the Leatherman so it will fit inside the factory sheath.

One of my favorite Leatherman saw mods yet. Simple and effective kit to throw in pouch.

You can either wear out the blade adapter which is replaceable or you can wear out the plier rivet with side pressure which is much less of a replaceable part.. plier rivets are fairly soft and the Part of the rivet that holds the sides together tightly is about 3/32 inch thick and doesn't withstand much leverage. I would drill and tap a hole through the pliers needle nose grip mid point. Then use a small machine screw to pin the blade. I would also notch the blade to fit over the pliers rather than just the cutters as it can ruin them too. That's a good start tho. Loving the larger blade ideas
@projectswithrich22
@projectswithrich22 2 года назад
That is a good point about wearable and replaceable parts and side loading the pliers. I feel like everything on the Leatherman is a compromise but the capabilities in such a small form factor are unmatched. It would be nice to have a design where more of the length of the blade was usable as well but I sacrificed that for the additional leverage.

This is pretty cool, so m7ch faster than the time I saw a cut out a piece of the metal bunk with dental floss to make a shank.
@GeertSawek
@GeertSawek 3 года назад
If you carry a leatherman crunch you can lock down on t shanks too. Much more compact than a surge. This is handy as so many people carry the wave.
@projectswithrich22
@projectswithrich22 3 года назад
I do like the crunch. Hopefully the it's just a rumor that they are discontinued. I agree with you on the size of the surge. The size of the wave makes it more practical.

@@projectswithrich22 just bought one recently, for normal price so i expect its sticking around
@projectswithrich22
@projectswithrich22 3 года назад
That's good to hear. It looks like most places have it backordered and one site listed it as discontinued. There may just be a shortage.

This is a neat idea, but I find adjusting T-shank blades for the Bit-holder a little easier. On the other hand your idea can be probably used with pretty much any multi tool.
@projectswithrich22
@projectswithrich22 3 года назад
I'll have to try making attachments for the bit holder. My reasoning behind doing it this way was that this is a larger, stiffer blade, that doesn't flex. The mounting is also very rigid and allows me to apply a lot of force to the blade for faster cutting.

@@projectswithrich22 yes, that makes sense.

Interesting mod, though I prefer the one that uses the pocket clip / lanyard clip method a bit better - seems like it would feel a bit more locked in.

This one should last quite a while. I had a previous less refined version for years and it still cuts. It doesn't take much more time to make a couple at a time though.

The idea of the every day carry tools is to have as many capabilities as possible when none of the real tools are available. I use the Leatherman constantly when I'm out of the shop and away from the corded tools. I've even used it to cut boards to length in a parking lot so they would fit in my truck.

If I carried a Leatherman Crunch the blade could be unmodified for sure. I usually just carry the Wave and Knipex Cobras on a daily basis though.

Have you tried wrapping some duck tape around a hacksaw blade? It's cheaper, easier and faster.

Not yet but I need to make one. It is a stock leatherman sheath, with the snap. I used a piece of stainless to stretch it wider so the leatherman fits next to a Fenix e12.

Whats the point when is already has a metal saw on the file
@projectswithrich22
@projectswithrich22 2 года назад
You could try it, but the edge of the file is more for filing than cutting. It is also wider than an actual metal saw blade and as you cut into a material it would be wearing down both sides of the file.
