@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 10 месяцев назад
@jeannetteellis2034 Unfortunately I do not. A lot of it was used with whatever dimensions I could get my hands on as far as scrap lumber and materials I was able to use to keep the price down on the build. I believe the third coast craftsman has plans for his which you can try out and just change up to fit your needs. I highly recommend the entire side opening, the split door, the rain barrel water system, and automated door. Good luck on your build and future chickens!

Highly recommend staining first if you can! I was in a bit of a crunch for time and the rain was relentless so I had to keep the project going the best I could. I’d also recommend putting the hardware cloth on the inside of the run if you can. It will help in the long run from keeping chickens from kicking sand etc up onto the studs. Functionally I went on the outside so it was harder for predators to push in on it but it doesn’t look as good as it could! Thank you for watching and commenting! Good luck on your build!

I have a “chicken coop” playlist for when t star to build my own, guess what video just made it into that list 😂 Also, who would’ve thought that painting the mesh wire black would’ve made the coop look clearer, less cloudy and more se through 🤔. Like how 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for sharing. Lovely ladies btw… (not the chickens 🐓) 😊
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
Well it’s an honor to have made your list! Yes the other benefit of the mesh being black is taking pictures of the inside of the coop when they’re roosting etc. With it unpainted the camera will only focus on the wires but once it is painted black it looks right through! Thank you for watching and good luck on your build! I’ll let the wife and kid know as well lmao

Believe me when I was making these I was dreaming of reaching a wide audience of people that were also in love with the hobby/lifestyle, but the algorithm is trash so it didn’t work out that way. But I’m definitely dropping another video and have footage of several more that I’ll eventually try to do. So much has happened it’s crazy! I am doing the deep litter method and I’ve also put a board in front of the wall that swings out to keep everything in! @annwithaplan9766
@annwithaplan9766 Год назад
@@TheReaper1 - Good job. I also liked your edging. I use the deep litter method, too. I had purchased my original coop which is still in use, but last year I built a smaller coop myself (I'm 65) and both coops are on the ground. I have electric fencing (but not charged) around the run with one easy-up canopy for shade and another canopy with no top which also holds up bird netting to keep out predators. So far, so good.
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
I thought the edging would help the asthetic a bit as well as up the defense of the hardware cloth under it. That’s great that you recently built a coop of your own! It proves age is just a number! How many chickens do you have now with 2 coops? They sound like great set ups! It’s very encouraging to hear you’ve been raising chickens all this time and are an advocate for the deep litter method. @TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
Why thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and my random thoughts through out the build lol. So on to the sand, after doing a bunch of research for the best run material “All purpose Constructed sand” was the winner. I got it at Home Depot and I’ll provide a link to it. It’s a little more coarse than “play sand”. People that did the research said “play sand” was a no no because it’s particles are too fine. If I were to do it again I would use more sand and have my coarse rocks even lower. I found out pretty quickly the chickens like to use the all purpose sand as make shift dust baths at times and will dig a hole that’s 8 inches deep, which in turn shoots out the larger rocks I placed for irrigation to shoot all over the place in the process! It doesn’t ruin anything other than when I “Poop Scoop” I often am scooping up those large rocks and just throwing them away as well. (So maybe don’t use any large stones) Hope this helps! Thank you for the compliment on the beard too! www.homedepot.com/p/Quikrete-50-lb-All-Purpose-Sand-115251/100318450 Thank you again for watching and good luck on your future build and chickens! Again thank you
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
@@saveforthree you better get a move on it then! 😆 As far as the coop size I’ll have to run out and measure it tomorrow but I’d say the coop is about 5’ 6” x 5’ 6” and the run itself is around 14-16’ including the area under the coop that is fenced in (hardware cloth) that’s a rough estimate but I feel it is somewhat accurate. I was using old lumber for the most part and stuff I got as scraps from jobsites. I’ll try to get some measurements tomorrow real quick in the morning. Thanks again!

Thank you! Yeah unfortunately the closest to blue prints was the drawing in the beginning. A lot of the lumber I used was old scrap pieces etc so I was just winging it with what I had. The windows etc were leftover from my house that I found in the attic one day too. The closest thing I have is the materials/hardware listed out if you click the Amazon links in the description. I found my answer to my question below. "Love Nwantiti" is a song by Nigerian singer and songwriter CKay, released in 2019 as the second track from his second extended play Ckay the First by Chocolate City through Warner Music Group. The song has become a commercial success in Nigeria, the Middle East, North Africa and in many European club venues. It has even been translated into French vocals by French rapper Franglish. My African/Mediteranean guess was the closest with respect to the vocals and my guess about India didn't hold up with the instrumentation. Great Build! Mac

Thank you very much for watching and inquiring about the music. I’m a fan of many genres. That particular song is Love Nwantiti by CKay, he’s a Nigerian singer. He sings in a version of English and a mix of his native tongue I forget the name of the language off hand. It has a great flow and Rhythm to it. How are you liking the grandpa's feeder knock off?
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
To be honest, for it to work properly it will need some modifications. It is far cheaper but with that comes some flaws. The lid is so light that after a few weeks it started to stay up. A solution to this is to fasten something to the top for extra weight so that the step will in turn lift back up. I’d also recommend putting something at the base like I did in the video to keep it from tipping at all. That was the number one issue I saw when reading reviews so I wanted to remedy that right away. Other than that it’s not bad. I may use a large hole saw to put a pvc 90 into the side that extends to the outside of the coop so that I can fill it with food without entering the run. Hope this info helps and again thank you for watching and inquiring!

@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
Thank you very much for watching Jessicasoss1586! I’m glad you enjoyed! As far as the quikrete, that is just the brand, it isn’t actual concrete, it is construction grade sand which is coarse, more so than play sand. I did a bunch of research trying to decide what to use in the run that would be easiest to clean and healthy for the chickens. It turns out, that sand causes less risk for respiratory infection, less insects activity such as mites etc, harder for any kind of bacteria to grow in, less chance of bumble foot and frostbite because it drains water so quickly (also I have large stone underneath so water drains almost instantly). The list goes on, but I would highly recommend it over anything else. Also cleaning the coop, I use essentially a slotted shovel like a scooper for a litter box. It’s super easy.

@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
Lmao well thank you again! I use RU-vid to learn how to do so much, including working on my truck. It’s free and like you said, watching from multiple sources and deciding the best method is the key. I had no idea what a hyperadobe house was until now. I looked it up and wow, if you’re going to be building one of those I hope you record the entire process! That looks awesome! By yourself will definitely be a challenge as those long lengths of fabric with the clay type material inside will be super heavy especially when placing it on higher layers, but where there’s a will there’s a way! One of the first homestead videos I’ve ever watched was a woman named Becky, she built a log cabin by herself. Watching her walk up a ladder with a log on her shoulder made me realize how much an individual can accomplish if they really set their mind to it. Good luck on your journey, and do your RU-vid college research! You got this! And make sure to record everything!

Whats the best insulation im in Colorado. It goes to -20°
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
To be completely honest I don’t know what to tell you for that. I can tell you that my coop has no insulation, but there are a couple of other factors I have going on. The deep litter method causes the pine shavings and chicken droppings to begin composting which in turns generates a small amount of heat in the coop. The specific breed of chicken you have will make a huge difference on the temperatures it is able to handle, some breeds are far hardier than others in colder climates. I only had 2 nights this past winter that dropped into the negatives that also were very windy to the point it was a -50 degree windchill all night. Now I knew that it was going to be very windy and that would cause the coop to lose temperature faster than if the air was still. So I broke down and bought a heating pad. It was around 30-40 dollars and safe enough for direct contact with anything in the coop (safer than a heat lamp). I used that and I saw the temperature of the coop itself rose internally an additional 5 degrees ( I have a wireless temperature gauge in the coop that I can see the readings inside my home from). After those two days I turned the pad back off as to not get them too used to supplemental heat. As you see in the video though I have no insulation on the walls for them. But again I don’t have consistent cold weather as low as yours. Hope this helps a little. Might be best to ask locally what others are doing. You’d be surprised sometimes of how little people do for them lol. Additional take that with a grain of salt because some people are use to losses on their flock where as I am trying to give everyone in it a fighting chance as best I can without breaking the bank. Cheers!

I’ve been looking for a design for my next coop and I love your video. I know you gave an Amazon list of extra materials you used, but do you have a list of what would you purchased and a design layout with measurements?
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
The Amazon lists have all the materials I used and tools I used. The only thing I don’t have on there is the lumber, roofing, and old windows I found in my attic! Lol. Unfortunately I do not have a list of all the lumber I used and I didn’t write down the exact measurements as I did it on the fly comparing it to other coops and adjusting sizes for the second hand lumber I mostly used on the build ( I obtained a lot of the lumber from jobsites that were going to waste it and throw it out ) I can tell you the majority of all the studs are 2x4’s. The legs of the coop itself are 4x4’s. The siding I used I got from Home Depot and it was 1/2” 4x8 sheets. Typically people use T1-11 that is pre primed for exterior use, but I was trying to be as cheap as possible so I could spend money on a rain barrel water system so I went with the sheets you see in the video and used an extreme exterior stain on the inside and outside of the coop. My apologies that some of this is vague. Let me know if there’s something specific you want to know about it, and thank you for watching!!!

@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 Год назад
Thank you very much! That's great that you guys have plans to build the coop, will be much easier than winging a build like I did! A lot of mine was built with recycled/scrapped lumber where I could use it. The windows also fall into that category lol. I found those two framed panes in my attic. They were around 70 years old but I can't complain when it cuts the cost down. Windows are very expensive and I'm very cheap so those two combos don't mix well. When the accident happened and the window broke that's when I had to spend a couple bucks (but still stayed cheap) and bought a couple of plexiglass pieces and framed them in. You gotta remember the chickens aren't going to complain about the types of windows as long as they can openfor fresh air in the summer. So keep an eye out at antique stores and yard sales etc, you never know what you'll find! Good luck to you two!

I’m seriously considering building this. Anything you would change after these few years of having it?
@TheReaper1
@TheReaper1 4 месяца назад
If you’re going to do the deep litter method inside the main coop, I would cut the chicken entrance door 8 inches higher minimum. I have pine shavings that jam up my automatic door every now and then because I made mine so low. Also stain the studs before you out the hardware cloth on. I had chickens on the way so I didn’t have time to do it that way. The large stones around the parameter of mine were awesome for over a year. Then I hatched out a rooster and unfortunately he loves messing those stones up looking for bugs. So get some bigger rocks if you go that route lol. I would also make a hatch door or have it so the side opens for the run on the side where you would collect eggs. Because it is short it’s impossible to clean from in the run without getting on your hands and knees. So having that part of the run be able to swing open for cleaning underneath would be the way to go. Makes it easier when adding sand or whatever you’re gonna use as the flooring in the run. Also the automatic feeder for food I have in the video, they make larger ones that can old like 25 lbs of food which can feed 10 Chickens for over a week. I would get that instead. That’s about it though everything else has been awesome. Also it’s not in the video but I ran heat trace cable and wrapped my entire water line and chicken cups all the way around the rain barell so that it doesn’t freeze during the winter then wrapped it all with white electrical tape. That worked well aside from a few -50 degree F days. For those I just gave them a bowl of water until the temp rose a bit. But that’s the list of my problems

The coop is now over 2 years old (took some time making the video) and the stain has been holding up surprisingly well. I most likely wont do anything to it this year but next year I may renew it with a coat or two. Between rain, heavy snowstorms, hail, and some insane smoke for a month from a forest fire, it’s done really well for the price! Lmao. It’s been 2 years now and I haven’t heard any complaints! All jokes aside there are trees up against the back of the coop maybe 2 feet from it so there’s only a small portion of the day sun hits it. And the line that goes into the coop and into the cups is all inside and shaded so I don’t think it gets too hot. Plus every now and then when I clean out I use my finger to test if they’re all working and it’s always felt cool. Appreciate the question though! I’d imagine if it was she’d by the coop on one side and trees on the other it could get toasty during the middle of summer!

Check out my product link in the description for materials. I used a heat trace cable rated for wrapping around the pipes down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit!

Awesome video, Im just so confused how you aren’t slapped with royalties for the music, love the music just thought that was a huge no no in youtube.

I paid for each song to be able to use them. I decided I didn’t want to have the same generic songs I hear on every other channel so I decided to shell out some money. Thank you for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed!

how does the sand do in the rain? does it smell?
@TheReaper1

The sand does very well with the rain. It dries up very quickly if it gets wet. The larger stone on the bottom help it drain even faster. Only complaint would be to the chickens themselves. They love digging it up and bringing the stones to the surface! Lmao. No smell coming from the sand whatsoever, it creates an environment that doesn’t allow bacteria etc to grow in. Poop removal once a week is extremely easy with a shovel I use that is made of wire so that the sand sifts right through (I usually get large stones too and just throw them out) Hope this answer helps you out! Take a look at other info online if you want, there are a ton of benefits of using sand. Thanks for watching!

Do you have the plans for the coop design?
@TheReaper1

Unfortunately I do not. The drawing in the beginning was the closest thing to it. I used a lot of left over lumber from jobsites etc so a lot of my measurements were on the fly using what I had to work with.
