Leslie, you are the best Girl Scout ever! Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sharing your great design. 🌿 P.S. Making all the cushions the same size is more practical in that they can be rotated and flipped for a longer life. Well done you👍🏼

An electric knife is the best way to cut foam. Spray the blade with a little pure silicone before each cut. They're serrated like your bread knife and will leave a smooth edge. Cost about $10 at the bigbox and last for years. I have an upholstery shop and use one because actual foam saws, literally a jigsaw with a giant blade, cost over $300.

Another very helpfiul video, and a great link for how to sew the covers! I've built and installed our frame and platform. The front sits about 7" above the floor of our Sienna. Now we're shopping for the mattress. The one you recommend looks great. My question is about how much does it compress when you sit on it. Thanks!
@TheVanThatGotAway

Buyer beware on foam mattresses, a surprising amount of them have fiberglass in the cover as a fire retardant. Taking the cover off can expose the fiberglass and spread tiny particles of glass around your house.

How useful is the aft facing bench? Other than access to the storage underneath (which my van doesn't have) is it worth it?
@TheVanThatGotAway
@TheVanThatGotAway Год назад
Hi Bill, that's a good question. We don't really use the aft facing bench for seating that much. But the reason it exists is because if I designed it so there was only a front facing seat, the platform would fold up too high to see out the back window if I'm driving while it's in bench mode. Also, as you mentioned, it's how we access the storage well. Without the need to get to the far back storage, you certainly open up a lot of different possibilities for bed design. What type of van are you working with?
@wardsdotnet
@wardsdotnet Год назад
@@TheVanThatGotAway 2002 sienna. Thinking about doing a folding bed without the aft facing bench. Maybe the other 18 inches would be a separate bench by the front seats

@TheVanThatGotAway

The cushions just sit on the platform, not attached. But I'm thinking of making a change and using some velcro to keep them from sliding.

@TheVanThatGotAway
@TheVanThatGotAway 3 года назад
Hey Boxer Babes! Thanks for asking. For the size of the mattress cushions I made, I got 7 yards of 55" wide fabric. Unlike the upholstery professionals I consulted, I wasn't worried about the pattern lining up EXACTLY the same on each one. I just wanted festive covers. Thanks for taking the time to chat.

@@TheVanThatGotAway thanks for the info. I did find a fabric calculator where it indicated 8 meters at 55"as well with a repeat. I'm like you, love to save money so I don't care enough about lining up a pattern! 😆 I'm actually leaning towards a solid and accessorize
