Christian, thanks for this video. I just replaced mine at 238k on my gs400 sadly i dont think it has ever been replaced. Grommet was hard as a rock and fell into valve body, luckily i was able to fish big chunk out with pliers. Runs like its brand new now and prob wont be burning those half quarts of oil anymore either
Funny.. i have had a 98 GS for 3 years (my second one) i had it for sale, only because i was going to purchase a 2007 GS.. and seen your videos... and decided not to sell my GS. Mine is in great condition interior and everything else.. i didn't really want to sell, i just got the idea in my head to get the 2007 GS.. which i still will, but i will keep my 98" GS also.. thanks
Excellent video! I was wondering if it is normal that the pcv valve moves around while sitting tight in the gourmet?I replaced the pcv on my 98 Lexus LS400 but I noticed the valve felt kind of loss( i mean it moves around), but you have to pull up hard to get it out.
You can take it out and shake it. It should rattle. Honestly, it’s so cheap I suggest doing it as a preventative measure if you’re not sure of its age.
I've just done the job, theres a thread on google you can use about changing the starter motor which includes removing the inlet manifold (where your vsv solenoid is located) and then you can flip the inlet manifold upside down, use some phillips screw drivers and flatheads to change the solenoid and canister and reassemble. taking the inlet manifold off and especially fitting it back on is the biggest pain in the ass ever, its not easy. done it 5 times now and ruined my fuel line flare nut in the process. It is doable though, about 4 hours altogether without rushing it if you set a decent pace doing the work
explorehunter the positive crankcase ventilation valve allows pressure build-up to release and get consumed “again” by the intake system. The intake creates a vacuum and pulls some of the hot “blow by” back again. In older cars it vented into the atmosphere and was often pointed down at the road, hence a lot of the videos you see of the roads back in the day had a prominent dark line down the middle of them.
It vents positive pressure from crankcase. All the leaked gases from combustion need to go somewhere. If pcv valve is clogged or stuck closed you will start leaking oil from the path of least resistance. (Usually your valve cover or cam seals, but really cam cause a leak from anywhere). Pcv valve possible symptoms. Runs rough. Oil leaks. Consumption of oil. Check engine light.
What is the valve (similar to PCV valve) on the passenger side valve cover ? Is that PCV valve as well ? Looks like its non-removable. @ForwardMomentum, Can you please let me know what it is ?
02 LS430 - when I was changing out my ocv, the pcv valve hose snapped at both ends. I barely touched it. Anyway... I will need to replace the hose and I might as well do the valve too. But my question is this: the old hose is a hard rubber like material, not flexible at all. So how will a new hose fit over a new valve if it's the same hard material?
You can go to your local auto store and just have them cut the right size and length off a spool. It doesn’t need to be a pre-formed hose shape unless it will contact something sharp. #sendit
@@ForwardMomentum ohhhh I see!!! Another question... How come my hose that snapped off is hard. It was also molded to valve and crankshaft stem... I wonder why Lexus did that?
Well probably to maintain shape and avoid a kinked PCV hose (which could actually cause a seal to blow out due to pressure). If you have any concern at all I recommend replacing it with an OEM part. So if it has sharps bends, I’d go OEM on that. Good job asking questions. 👊
@@ForwardMomentum the OEM hose is not much cost difference but I have no idea how it will install on the stem or valve since it's so hard. I know these are odd questions but I'm super stressed out. What turned into a simple ocv replacement has led to something e else
@@tneal3042 you can add heat to the hose to make it more pliable at the ends if you need to. The new OEM hose won’t be rock hard like that old hose that broke on you. You’ll be fine. 👍
Noah Bailey also check your vacuum hoses. I also have an 04 GS430 that would get that code after every fill up. I checked some vacuum hoses and noticed that they were badly cracked. Once I changed them the CEL never came back on. I also replaced that gas cap before I did the hoses and would still get the CEL. Hope this helps!
Interesting idea for a vid! I can tell you exactly what I get for mpg: 18.75mpg mixed over the last 7 years. I have a lead foot too. I get up to 24mpg highway going easy and about 21 keeping up with traffic. In all honesty if I was looking for a commuter with some performance I would get a Civic Si sedan and turbo it. My friend gets 34mpg highway from his.
Forward Momentum wow I’m looking at the GS400 just because I’ve always wanted one, also looking at the Lexus IS350. Which gen was the civic? I need something more professional business.
bosshognit ok gotcha. Well if you need better than 18-20mpg and more professional than a Civic, you could go Acura TL or Lexus ES without breaking the bank. Or, just get the GS and drive it to easy. :)
To tell you the truth I really don't know what type of diff is on it it has the m instead of the 4 on the shift selector if the o/d not working does that mean I need a new transmission
@@C-DIESELCATC first of all, check the fluid. Make sure it’s good and not burnt and the correct level. Second, does it do this in “D” mode? Does it have really low profile tires on 16” wheels? Something is off. Make sure you’re not in “4” while in M mode. Go to D.
