In my series of free online piano lessons I hope that I will give you the tools to learn some of the basics of the instrument. In each lesson there is an exercise for you to develop a specific technique and a piece of music for you to learn. You can also click on the links to access lots of FREE resources including sheet music and backing tracks.
This piano course is perfect for beginners and is especially helpful if you are learning piano as an adult.
In lesson 1 we cover some of the basics of the piano, including how to find middle C and how to play different pitches of notes. The student is encouraged to explore the piano keyboard by finding the note "C" at different octaves on the piano. We look at basic hand position on the piano and how to play some simple 5 finger exercises starting on middle C.
The piece in lesson 1 is a simple piano piece for just the right hand using the notes C, D, E, F and G in the key of C major. It only uses whole notes, half notes and quarter notes (semibreves, minims and crotchets). The right hand doesn't need to move out of position. Students are encouraged to stay relaxed as they play the notes. They are also introduced to the correct right hand fingering (1 = thumb and 5 = little finger).
A backing track is provided so that students are challenged to play the piano in time with a beat - this is a crucial skill to learn.
