@newgardenroad Hi I just found you. I subscribed, I've tried in ground but with a bad bag , all our gardens now are above ground in galvanized 4x8 plots , I tried that last year ,I can't this year , So using 10 & 20 gallon grow bags , I added 13-13-13 in dirt . Do you add any other fertilizers during the season ? Like fish emulsion etc.. for organic ? Thank you Mrs j Montgomery County, Texas

I grew sweet potatoes in grow bags for the first time this year. Made slips from a sprouted organic sweet potato I bought at the grocery store. Have made slips before and it's quite straightforward. Had a great harvest. Grew them last year in a raised bed and it was a bit of a pain getting the potatoes out of the ground. Had some roots grow back this year. With the grow bags I just gently dumped the bag in a wheel barrow to harvest. Easy, peasy. I cured them outside in a shed and then forgot about them. When I went to check our weather had been so warm they were starting to sprout. Next year I will bring them into the cooler house. Just boiled them up and popped them in the freezer. We don't eat them but they go in my homemade pup food. ☺

A great tip I learned about growing sweet potatoes was to let a potato sprout on the counter. When the sprouts are between three and 4 inches long, pluck them off of the potato, trying to keep the little plug at the end of the sprout (where it connects to the potato). Place the sprouts and water and allow them to grow roots for 2 to 3 weeks and until this sprouts are between six and 8 inches long. Plant these sprouts 4-5 inches deep. These will be much more successful than cuttings as far as producing potatoes…

Consider the addition of about 30%-50% wood shavings or some other organic addition that loosens the soil. Sweet potatoes that grow well actually grow along the top and are very easy to harvest and produce a great deal of huge potatoes.

Just used a Aldi's bought sweet potato (no clue if it's organic) to grow slips started by covering half the potato in organic potting soil. On my third set of slips. These slips will go in 10 gal grow bags while all the others are in the raised beds. The raised bed slips have been planted for a month and are now just starting to take off because it's what we call "Africa Hot" here this time of year. They stress a bit now but they will do fine. As far as the bag plantings, I will cut and transplant them in the bags this evening. Looking forward to see the differences. Enjoyed your video and learned something. Thanks!

Ive figured out that plants that want to grow, will grow in anything so long as their basic needs are met. Sweet potatoes like many others will grow quite well in hydroponic set ups, so they dont even need soil, bur do need something to support the roots and storage roots. This year i tried the seed potatoe method from rhe hardware store, and at least one of the six is doing extremely well, and so is my experiment with growing them in pine needles with only a little dirt for moisture and nutrient retention in buckets. Im also not going birher with seed roots, and am just going save rhe small "potatoes" for next years growing stock. These really are vegetables you only need to buy once, like peppers, onions, peas.... just wish i could keep growing year round, but that would require at least two green houses, each climate controlled ro simulate the seasons. I think your success with the bags had a partial effect from they being above ground, and the colour being black, keeping the heat closer to tropical. I also did wind a few vines back into pots to see how well theyd do, but im not sure about rhat since rhey only had about three months insteadnof five. Up in new england you really want rhe full five month growing season since its only ideal for growing between july amd August, as the temp can vary wildly in September as it cools down and comes ro a hault in October.

Thank you for your video! I just ordered the 12 foot raised bed from Smart Pods. I ordered 25 slips from Johnny’s Selected Seeds. I was hoping to plant half the raised bed bag with acorn squash and half the sweet potato slips. Am I going to crowd 25 slips in 6 feet? What would you do?
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 2 года назад
That may be a little bit of a squeeze, but the 10 gallon size that I used was only slightly larger than a square foot and I planted six slips. I would normally space them 8 inches apart but in this instance they were spaced at about 6 inches. They turned out well in my opinion, but required daily watering once the weather got hot and the tubers started to size up. 👍🏼✨

I wish I could send pictures for you see what I'm saying 😢Thanks again!!

Hey! They need 6-8 hours of full sun. You don't have to do anything with the runners. You can add more soil to cover the white roots, but I'm not exactly sure what you're seeing. Send me an email with a photo if you wish, scott@newgardenroad.com
@nic.h
@nic.h 6 месяцев назад
Not an expert, but I believe you are supposed to get better results not letting the runners root, as they divide the effort it would have been putting into the main cluster. So you might get some more from where it roots, but overall you'll be harvesting smaller sweet potatoes. Just something I heard previously, so take it with a pinch of salt.

I planted my sweet potatoes in grow bags a month ago but now I noticed that the leaves are starting to turn yellow. This is my first year growing and I don’t know if I suppose to fertilize them or move them to a different area that gets more sunlight.
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 2 года назад
Hi, when I observe yellowing leaves the first thing I check is the soil moisture. If kept soggy, roots can rot. If that seems to be in balance try applying liquid seaweed which is good for plant stress. While not a fertilizer on its own, seaweed is often combined with fish emulsion to make a complete plant food. You might look for Medina Liquid Fish Blend. They will grow lush leaves just as well in part shade, but for the best tuber production they need 6-8 hours of full sun. ☀️
@vrobinson9283
@vrobinson9283 2 года назад
Hello, how often should you water do they like sunlight or half and half
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 2 года назад
Hi! Watering will vary and I always recommend physically checking the soil. The top two inches should feel dry-ish before they’re watered. That being said, newly planted slips will need daily watering until they’re established (generally two weeks). During the hotter months I watered daily, and mine were in full sun. They can grow with less sun, but may be less productive. I would shoot for 6-8 hours of full sun if possible with southeast exposure. 🍠☀️

@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 10 месяцев назад
I don’t do anything with the vines but let them grow freely. The best sized potatoes will form directly below where the slips were planted in my experience. In terms of watering, allow the soil to dry slightly, but if the weather is hot and you’re growing in fabric pots, daily watering will likely be necessary. I hope that helps.

I used a potting mix in the grow bags, and I reuse it from season to season by adding 1/4 fresh potting, and some organic fertilizer. Sometimes I add a little compost or mushroom block substrate. This has resulted in satisfactory tuber production.

I've seen them grown in the ground, in grow bags, directly in potting mix bags, in cardboard boxes and rubbish bags. All seemed to be pretty viable. I'm planting some for the first time this season and trying to decide where I'm going to put them. I have space in the ground but am hesitant as they are prolific spreaders, so am considering containers to help keep them well...contained along with some sort of trellis for the vines to climb.

Why did you plant so many slips in one pot instead of letting the vines root itself in the pots? Other videos I've watched say that more sweet potatoes grow wherever the vine roots itself. Did you maybe not know this or did you plant so many in one pot for some other reason? I'm curious because this is my first year growing them.
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad Год назад
The vines will root, but the potatoes they form are much smaller than the cluster that grows at the base of each slip. When they root a long the vine this can also redirect nutrients away from the main cluster. I was also experimenting with this planting as I had already planted out a raised bed with slips. In the end I was pleased with the harvest from these grow bags.
@goldengirl65
@goldengirl65 Год назад
@@newgardenroad thanks for replying. There's so much conflicting information from different channels it's hard to know which is best. Other videos and articles say only put one slip in a bag because if you put more then that can affect the size and amount you get to harvest. I've planted about four grow bags with one slip only. Perhaps my next bags I will try two or three and see how the harvest compares. I'm a bit late putting them in because the weather has been awful, so I will be happy if I get anything. It's good to experiment and see what works best. But of course that doesn't mean what worked best one year will the next. Good to hear you were happy with the grow bags. This is my first year using grow bags and I have all sorts of vegies in them and all are looking great. I'm impressed so far with how well they are all doing in the bags and it's great how you can move them round so if something gets a little big for the area you put the bag you can move it elsewhere. I'm going to pop a couple of fruit trees in bags because I've seen so many say they do really well in them.

Sweet potatoes are invasive. You should contain them in bags or a dedicated garden spot. One tiny part surviving will spread throughout your garden eventually. Scorching afternoon sun is bad for food crops. 1st 1/2 day or so of sun works well for most crops. Black pots can kill any roots on the side facing the afternoon sun.
