Try your best not to touch them with your bare hands, it causes spotting from oil on your skin, and don't wash them with water until ready to use! Also don't allow frost or freeze to kill the vines! Just a few things I know from many years of growing this incredible vegetable!!

Beautiful tubers and some great hints. Thank you!! It’s my second year of growing SPs in containers. I only had slips for the Japanese purple variety. They were very small last year but very sweet. I’m hoping for some larger ones this year. I planted the slips a bit early, and it was too cold for them to grow, but they took off once the weather got warm. I give the leaves to our hens.

@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 10 месяцев назад
The top growth will die back with the first frost, but the tubers are more cold hardy. Supposing the first frost isn't a long hard freeze, you could harvest after. Best thing you can do to assure propagating them for next season is to harvest and store a few to sprouting in late winter.

I would consider your first average frost date. You may still have enough time to sprout and plant. In ATX ours is late November, so I’m comfortable starting slips as late as early June for mid July planting.

This was my first year growing SP. A lot of them were curvy and twisted around each other. Any tips to avoid this?
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad 10 месяцев назад
This can happen when the soil is heavy and the tubers encounter resistance as they develop. Adding organic matter such as compost can improve soil texture over time. I'm not sure if that's what happened here, but I hope that helps.

Thank you for that input. I mixed potting soil with some of my garden soil so had a good mix. I did however just read that if you didn't transplant them in a timely manner the roots could become tangled. This may have been my problem as I started them early. Searching for info about planting and protecting my hard work. You mention weevils as a pest to watch for. How do you try to prevent them from infesting and ruining the crop. This will be the first time planting in a new garden (not beds but hills) So no cross contamination. Researching items on line, one site said you need a license to order. Any info would be appreciated
@newgardenroad
@newgardenroad Год назад
Hello David! The main thing that I do to prevent them is crop rotation and disposal of any infested potatoes. They have never completely ruined my crop, just a handful of the overall harvest. One other option to consider is applying beneficial nematodes to the soil prior to planting. You can find them at www.arbico-organics.com/category/beneficial-nematodes. I applied them to my garden last December and so far I'm seeing much less occurrence of pests such as flea beetles, and cucumber beetles. I hope that helps!

What is your geographical location? When is your last frost? When is your first frost? I sprout a grocery store potato in the house 2 months before planting it April 20, that is our last frost. I let my plants grow 6½ months until our first frost kills the plants Nov 1st. I typically get 20 to 25 lbs of new potatoes from each plant. Plants love our hot blistering 100° dry as desert TN weather. I only grow white color sweet potatoes, we don't like the orange potatoes. My crop never seems to do better with fertilizer or water. I added a lot of dead tree leaves to the soil but leaves are gone in 3 months our hot weather cooks the organic material away. Sweet potato plants grow excellent in full sun. Sweet potatoes are a zero maintenance crop return 6 months later and dig up 75 lbs of new potatoes from 3 plants. We don't get much rain during the summer about 1" every month.
