In 1970 l bought steppenwolf live double album and it rocked . Long time ago now all the old partyers l knew are all gone but l still have some sweet dreams.
Those crunching powerhouse chords combined with those WAILING riffs are what make this song so uniquely great---this is HEAVY blues at its finest!! (And what a fitting tune to begin the greatest counterculture film of all-time!!)
One of my favourite movies& song. This is so cool. Have a trippy, groovy psychedelic, Sunday rockers,, I got to see Steppenwolf in concert& they were outta sight☮️💙🎸🎹
Can you imagine being in grade school and understanding the words to this song, I would listen to the words, instead of the music! The pusher! He still here in 2023!
The iconic paint on both of those choppers (and that helmet) was applied by Dean Lanza. That's a fitting tune for that scene. "The Pusher" was penned by Hoyt Axton. Steppenwolf made it their own.
I wouldn't necessarily call it the greatest film, as while it does capture a certain age and feeling really well, a bowl of soup, or even a Michael Bay-movie has more plot than it.
LOVE this song.... my dad had the Easy Rider soundtrack.... used to listen to it all the time while driving. (Was on a cassette.... don't know where it is now... should download it...)
Brings me back to 69/70 at Val's Hamburgers Danbury Conn when John the night manager would put this on instead of the muzak we had to listen to when the owner or day manager was there.
You know I've smoked a lot of grass O' Lord, I've popped a lot of pills But I never touched nothin' That my spirit could kill You know, I've seen a lot of people walkin' 'round With tombstones in their eyes But the pusher don't care Ah, if you live or if you die God damn, The Pusher God damn, I say The Pusher I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man You know the dealer, the dealer is a man With the love grass in his hand Oh but the pusher is a monster Good God, he's not a natural man The dealer for a nickel Lord, will sell you lots of sweet dreams Ah, but the pusher ruin your body Lord, he'll leave your, he'll leave your mind to scream God damn, The Pusher God damn, God damn the Pusher I said God damn, God, God damn The Pusher man Well, now if I were the president of this land You know, I'd declare total war on The Pusher man I'd cut him if he stands, and I'd shoot him if he'd run Yes I'd kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun God damn The Pusher Gad damn The Pusher I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man

*_There's revolution in the air... And also in the river... I'm not gonna cut my hair... The sky's up in the sky... And the rivers are the forests are the mountains are the seas... And I am you... But you are not me... And the visions of our minds are in the vallies which are vallies. And the oceans and a camel and my new socks and a book._*
Has any one ever noticed that the opening scene first showing the bike then Fond is reversed ?look close and see the stars and strips and lines on jacket on opposite sides ? i noticed this many years ago but have never read it mentioned . this is my all time favourite film and started my custom bike interest more than 30 years ago .
Hoyt was a very prolific singer, guitar player, and songwriter. He wrote songs that most can recognize, but be unaware of his contribution. He wrote the classic "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" , The Pusher man, and many many more. Godspeed, Hoyt .....
Important fact, both those choppers were designed and built by a Black builder. His name was Sugar Bear. Look it up. The racial climate in 1969 suppressed that info. Awesome machines!!
