Nice method. This brings up a question: The smallest mass needed for static balance is at 180 degrees from the equilibrium line and near the periphery. But what if you want to minimize the increase in moment of inertia due to the added mass? if m is the added mass and r is the distance from the center along the 180 degrees line then the added moment of inertia is mr^2. keeping mr = constant, it seems that added a larger mass closer to the center will decrease the added moment of inertia.

Thanks for your comments. You are correct in saying that the moment of inertia increases by putting the balancing masses farther away from the rotation axys. So from this perspective it is better to put the masses close to the center, but also in this case larger masses will increase the overall weight. Many times the position of the added masses is fixed, such as in the rim of a wheel, or the tip of a turbine rotor. Furthermore for complete solution of the problem, dynamic balancing must also be considered. In dynamic balancing the products of inertia are cancelled to avoid vibrations caused by esentially angular misalignments.

Any simple way to do dynamic balancing?. Say we only have a vibration sensor.

this was 100% useful. instead of buying an expensive balancing machine. i can use this method. i just need to use my digital scale to measure and form the correct weight. coins are good. a file can reduce their weight accurately. thanks.

question. if we want to think about removing weight instead of adding weight, then how the formulas will work? drilling and making a hole and removing weight is more practical than adding wieght. specially when rotating at high speed cello tape can not be used. adding weight needs nuts and bolts and it is impractical. we make a hole. we weight how much of matter is removed by one drilled hole. then we know each whole with certain diameter of drill gives us that much remkves mass. now, where do we drill? at what angel?
