I often get the question of how I manage to car-top my kayak by myself, and hear of people who want to kayak but think they can't manage the process alone. Well, for years, I really wanted to be able to kayak fish, but I thought that I wouldn't be able to handle transporting a kayak on a car-top roof rack. Through a lot of research, and trial & error, I have come up with a pretty good system, and I'm hoping that sharing it helps get someone else on the water.
My Kayak: Old Town Loon 106 Angler
My Roof Rack: Yakima BaseLine System crossbars, 2 Yakima DeckHand kayak cradles, Yakima BoatLoader EVO

Thanks! The hair bands tend to give out pretty fast, but they are good in a crunch.

That BoatLoader bar is really the best! I looked into the rollers since most setups have one set of cradles and one set of rollers to help load, but I wanted the "cushiness" of two sets of cradles so if I left my kayak on my car for a day in between trips, there would be less risk of damage to the hull.

Nice video! There is a product called “kayak tie down loops” that I may recommend! They attach under your hood (easily) and you simply pull them out when needed - they stay under your hood otherwise. They are back savers and allow you a quick easy and secure tie down for the front of your yak. I think Dicks has them for less than 10. Best wishes for fishing success. I enjoy your videos. Be safe. Hi Ron! Thanks for the advice! I did look at the hood and trunk tie-down loops at one point, but I am used to using these straps with the hooks, so I am sticking with them for now. But thanks, sharing info helps us all! :) -Melissa

To solve the problem of the yak sliding backwards off the bar, if there's no grass around to put it on, you can simply tie a rope from stern of the yak to your front roof bar, making sure there's no slack. Then the stern of the yak can't slide backwards during this step.

Good idea! I now carry a small neoprene pad in my car that I can put under the tail of the kayak for traction if needed.

What a great video! So solid and practical and helpful. May I ask specifics on the tubing used to reduce sliding? I had a bit of trouble with the audio, and the auto-generated closed captioning didn't help all that much. Am I hearing "ClearFlex Premium 60 PVC"? And -- if I'm hearing it correctly -- does the "60" refer to the diameter? If not, what diameter should I order? (My Evo has not yet arrived so I can't measure it, and I'm trying to get everything ready in advance.) I played it over and over, and that's as close as I can get. I'd welcome recommendations or a link to purchase. Thanks, all! Spring is here and it's time to kayak!
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 3 года назад
Hi, sorry about the bad audio! This was one of my early videos, I am learning as much about filming as I am about fishing! The tubing is something a buddy pulled out of his car when he saw the kayak slip off the bar. It is a clearish softish rubbery plastic.... sorry, I know that isn't helpful, but I think if you went to the hardware store and walked around you would find something that worked. He slit it up one side, cut it to fit the length, and it works beautifully! Even just draping a rubbery material over the bar would help...and a rubbery pad on the ground would be an extra bonus if you have to load on pavement. The bottom of the boat sometimes slips out on pavement or wet ground once you put the nose up on the bar, so I try to load on grass, but a little square of something like a yoga mat would work really well, too, to prevent the bottom end from ever slipping.

@@GirlGoneFishing Good morning! That is VERY helpful, thanks. The Yakima Boatloader should arrive next week, so I'll bring it with me to the hardware store to measure diameter. Thanks also for the great idea of the rubbery pad on the ground; when I first got my most recent iPhone, it slid off everything until I got a good "grippy" case. So this makes all kinds of sense to me. Thanks for your video and your rapid and helpful reply. Have a great spring, with LOTS of kayaking.

A couple of other things that I have found to be very useful over the last year: the Rogue phone tether, to keep you from dropping your phone in the water. The Rogue stand up assist strap that I use on the nose of my kayak to drag it, that has been very useful in maneuvering around boat ramps. A Kayak Kushion to make the seat a little more comfortable. And I just replaced my anchor with one that works much better. I had the kind where the three prongs fold up, and it was basically useless even in light wind, just dragged along the ground. Someone recommended a YakGear anchor that looks like a hook shape so it comes up and bends to one side. I have been using that this week in 18 mph winds, and it has worked brilliantly. I bought the 1 kg size, and took the opportunity to buy a longer rope for it I am off to the lake, hoping to get a few big bass before the storms move in today!

@@GirlGoneFishing Good morning. What great replies! Almost all of those are new to me so I will do some online research on all of them. I have a tethered waterproof bag for my phone but I'm always interested in other options. And the "stand up assist strap" is something I've never even heard of. But an enthusiastic "yes" on a kayak cushion, a big deal on longer trips. And I'll admit that I've never used a kayak anchor at all, so I'll research that, also. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Very well done video, a lot of information. I’m interested in the cockpit cover you are using ? Where did you buy that ? It stays on ok at 60 mph ?
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 2 года назад
I used to car-top that Loon with no cover, and oh boy did it collect water on the highway! I researched the correct size and reviews, and went with one of these Seal cockpit covers. I’m really sorry but I can’t remember which size I got, but I know I figured it out through google: www.sealsskirts.com/prod_detect.php?i=25 This is a similar option: www.oakorchardcanoe.com/detail.php?product=3640 Mine stayed on at highway speeds because it has a belly strap on the actual cover, plus I made sure at least one of my regular roof rack belly straps went over the cover.

IMO, stem lines are there to prevent a hull from sliding forward or backwards. Like when slamming on the brakes or wind pressure at high speeds. They should not be ratcheted. This pulls the stems down and forces the bilges outward and in a hot sun over time can distort the original shape. This has actually happened, more than once. If I could post a photo here I would show this.
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 3 года назад
I definitely wouldn’t leave the boat sitting on the car in the sun with the straps tightened, but I like the security the ratchets provide during transport.
@1960HikerDude
@1960HikerDude 3 года назад
@@GirlGoneFishing I agree with John on the ratchet straps. They're overkill and could damage your yak over time. The belly bands will keep your boat from sliding front are back, provided your cross bars are far enough apart so the widest part of you kayak is between them. Then you can use conventional straps to tie down the bow and stern for extra security.
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 3 года назад
I’m happy with the ratchet straps for bow and stern, but I am also aware of not tightening them down too much and not leaving it tightened down sitting on the roof rack. But when a strap wears out, I replace it with whatever is highest quality that I find at my local hardware store, so I change strap styles every couple of years. It doesn’t really matter to me what kind of strap it is, as long as it is high quality and holds securely.
