△This video is all about:
1. How to remove salt from Spam.
2. How to marinate and cook Spam in a carbon steel pan.
By the way, I simply love SPAM if it is prepared properly!
I just added a link to those mixing bowls I used: amzn.to/3yRakBy
I purchased my Ballarini carbon steel pan from Amazon: amzn.to/3uFANiE
I found the 11-inch model worked the best because it was big enough to contain almost all the spam. There were about 4-5 pieces of spam I added after the majority was removed from the pan.
You can use other carbon steel pans for your SPAM cooking listed below if you want:
△ Ballarini Carbon Steel Pan: amzn.to/3uFANiE

Does anyone recall needing to open the Spam can with the special "key" that came attached to the top of the can? After the slit in the "key" had the starting piece of the metal strip that wrapperd all around the can threaded through, you would start evenly, nicely turning the strip. It wrapped in one big metal curlicue thing around the "key" all around the can, back to where it began so the lid could lift off the top. Circa de 1964-ish when I was about 10 yrs old, my grandmother, spam-feeder, would let me very, very, very CAREFULLY (because it was a thin SHARP metal edge I was dealing with - hugh potential for getting some nasty finger decapitations if not very, very, very careful!) unwind the metal seal thingy off of the "key", throw it away, and keep the "key" - MY VERY OWN "key" to MY house, my car, my garage or whatever I fantasized it for at the moment! I did it every time I could and would have hundreds had I saved them all. I saved none but I sure have hundreds of special memories of the tons of fun I had from getting to do that! Now opening the can is easier and more efficient but lacks so much adventure!

I'm in my sixties, and I remember that key well. I haven't bought a can of Spam for many years, but I guess now it won't be as much fun to open. The threat of an arterial spurt made life so much more interesting.

Indeed, I remember the days of the 'key'! Sometimes the strip would *break* just after starting and my dad would find some pliers in our kitchen junk drawer (doesn't everyone have a junk drawer?) and he would work the end free and reattach the key and try again.

I remember cutting myself many, many times. It was as sharp as a razor. As children we weren't allowed to open the cans ourselves. We used it in peas and carrot salad, which was a recipe we got off the can in the 60's. It was called "Spam ham salad."! We loved saying it's name! Does anyone else remember that recipe??

Spam...the original MRE. As a single dad, I taught my son at 5 years old it would save his life one day...like his great grandfather in WW2 who survived on an island with it for 3 months after he was shot down. Lasts 30 years or more in the can. But now...fry it, put it on toast with a lilttle pepper and butter and mayo and some fresh onion.....great stuff. With this economy, we're gonna have to go thru it again.

Slice and boil Spam for 5 minutes or until slices float. Let stand in hot water 5 more minutes. Remove slices to strainer, rinse well. Set slices on paper towels to dry. Stack slices for slicing. Cut into squares Sauce: prepared teriyaki sauce, Brown sugar, mix well Melt butter in pan Fry desalted spam in butter until caramelized on both sides. Add sauce, labor of love Let spam caramelize to bring out flavor. Do not over crowd pan. Poor pan drippings over spam. To clean pan, add water while hot to loosen caramelized sugar before going to sink. This looks great. Nice job.

Just an observation. We do most of our grocery shopping at Wakmart. A can of spam sells for $3.38 . A few months ago they were completely out of Spam so I purchased a can of Great Value luncheon meat for $2,28 . To my surprise , I could not tell any difference between the 2 products except that the Walmart brand seems slightly less salty . They look identical in side by side comparison . Since then I have been buying Great Value Lite Luncheon meat which is a blend of pork and chicken with less sodium . It taste and looks exactly like Spam as well. The Spam and the GV luncheon meat list the exact same ingredients. It's a no brainer at $1.10 less per can. One more thing , Dollar General sells Clover Valley Luncheon meat that is exactly the same as well for cheap. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you try these.

Shit ton of salt though, maybe even enough to outright kill a person with COPD.

That's exactly the way that I get the salt out of spam too. I live in Hawaii and we locals love our teriyaki spam musubi. If you don't do this process before adding in the teriyaki sauce, you get salt overload. Of course we have regular spam musubi. In which case you don't really need to take the salt out. The rice balances out the saltiness. Try taking the spam after the boiling process and make a egg and spam sandwich. Just an over easy egg and a slice of spam with a dab of mayo on buttered toast. Nice video. I opened a can of SPAM last week (6.1.23), that had a 2014 'use before' date...9 years too old. It was nice and pink and tasted fine due to plenty of salt. I use a cold water method of soaking and most salt is gone in a couple of hours after several rinses. Goes great with scrambled eggs. So, SPAM lasts many years after the suggested use date, probably 20 years.

Just a friendly hello... Salt won't actually mess up your blood pressure (despite what the doc says). That myth is still going around. My doc told me this too, but it's bull. Salt is an essential nutrient and good for ya. If you eat too much, your body will get rid of it without concern (but usually your own taste buds will stop you from eating too much)... and it's nearly impossible to "eat too much". There is actually no legit science that proves salt does anything to your heart but this has been parroted so long that people (including many doctors) still believe and keep repeating it. Sugar, on the other hand, is really the culprit; it's WAY more detrimental to heart health. Recommend checking out the book The Salt Fix. I stopped limiting salt a couple of years ago and enjoy it in my food now. My blood pressure is now totally normal too! No heart issues. We've been lied to about this wonderful little mineral made by God.

If you do have high blood pressure then you do realise that he hasn't taken the salt out of Spam he has actually added more salt and a lot more of sugar to mask the salt in Spam? Oh, you definitely need to fry it then. It is the tastiest way to eat it. Sliced thin though (thinner than him, is how I prefer it.) Not a fan of the texture of it out of the can, so if sliced thin and fried, it changes the texture enough that it is quite nice actually. If it's too thick, it retains some of that texture. @@thomasayer7511 Well yeah, but in a shtf situation or disaster, where are you going to get bacon? Lol. And, we've already seen supply issues and shortages of many things in the last couple of years and it's getting worse. We're pretty lucky Pork has been one of the most readily available meats throughout the pandemic and this. Beef had shortages and was and is getting more expensive constantly and even chicken where I lived was in short supply, temporarily and saw massive price increases. Yet I still find pork sales/specials regularly and in more supply than beef or chicken and not once has it been in short supply near me (and we have no pig farms right locally, so....). Matter of fact, sometimes we were swimming in Pork really and I'm still getting deals on it. If you can call them deals, these days, lol. Bacon prices sure shot up, but other forms of pork are still very reasonable like chops, peameal bacon, lions, hams etc. And now and then I still get bacon specials. But I also ain't fussy about buying fattier cheaper bacon either, fat is flavour and good for you. Even the higher end stuff goes on sale pretty regularly too though. I would use a cast iron grill pan to get good grill marks. I would sauté green onions and pineapple chunks before the spam, for an additional flavor layer. Then finish it with orange zest. Thank you for your slicer tip and the salt remover tip.

yes I remember the key to open up the spam can. Years years ago. We used to cook spam in a cast iron can a lot back in the day especially in the morning with eggs. Thanks for teaching me how to remove the salt from spam. U learn something new every day. Spam does have a lot of salt in it. So this is good to know. Food for thought as they use to say. Using butter to fry it is better than oil. Oil is mostly not good for you in general. We don't fry much in our house because it's not good for u. Use butter when u can people. Good Job on the spam trip. ❤🎉😮😊

You could also make some red eyed gravy with those tid bits of fried Spam from the bottom of your skillet, to use on grits or anything else you want to have. Your less salt Spam with sweet teriyaki sauce looks so good! My son and I practically have Spam everyday in one way or another. It's so versatile. Spam fries, chopped in an egg scramble, in soups or stews, on a hamburger bun with BBQ sauce, or just ketchup and mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, like a hamburger (Spam burger). Fried up with potatoes and onions, in casseroles..in a poor man's meal, great grilled too and one our favs, chopped up and added to Jiffy corn bread mixed, baked in with the cornbread and then before eating we drizzle honey on top. So you get that sweet & salty taste going on. OH, SO GOOD!! Thanks for sharing! :-)

I boil extra thick bacon like this to leach the salt out of it then transfer it to an air fryer and I absolutely love my bacon this way. It's so much less salty and tastes a lot like uncured bacon (also delicious but cured keeps a bit longer). I've also done it with pork belly and even cured ham. It doesn't work as well with cured ham, but every little bit helps. I'm not a big fan of saltiness (and I'm getting older, so it's healthier).

I love this idea! I can’t wait to try it. I would like to suggest that after cooking you might want to put the cooked slices on a cooling rack. That way they cool from air circulation. When you add them to the Pyrex when still hot they actually will steam each other and lose the caramelization that you achieved.

Pro tip for Great Value brand products: They are the same as "name brand products" made in the same factory only different packaging. I worked in a factory that produced both Big Chief (popular name brand in Michigan) and Great Value sugar. Wal-mart makes deals with producers so the company doesn't have to do it themselves which saves Wal-mart and their customers money.
