We put our compost into a worm tower. It's much easier than handling other forms of compost. You just bury a larger PVC pipe a few feet into the ground that has holes drilled in the side wall and put your compost materials into it. the worms will crawl thru the pipe and bring the nutrients out to be disbursed into the soil. It's really cool to see when you fill it up with compost and then come back after a couple weeks and it's empty again! 🙂

hey liah! Loved your video ❤ I think there are two more crucial habits you can add: 1. Using your own cup for coffee since most people get coffee everyday and it can have a massive impact if we can change from using to-go cups to personal cups. Starbucks has a promotional system where you get 25 stars for every time you take your coffee in your own cup so that means you can have 1 free coffee after every 5-6 coffees. Other small cafes also give discounts for this! 2. Carry your own bag! No matter how sustainable paper bags are in comparison to plastic bags, they will take resources to be made and be transported and be printed etc. this can be easily avoided by carrying packable tote bags with you in your purse or bag and use them for whenever you shop. They are more durable (obviously) and look stylish too! It’s a win. And you get charged to use bags here in New York so it saves you money as well! 🌴 Edit: it may sound crazy but I carry my own spoon and fork because I eat out a lot and I think it should have to impact the planet. I usually just put them with my personal cup and it takes absolutely no space! It’s really the little things that matter. Recycling also takes up a lot of energy so why even create waste when being sustainable is just a little more work. It also gives me great joy and makes me feel I have a purpose in life which is very rewarding and satisfying, I think that feeling is missing for a lot of people.

1) cut out on eating meat as much as you can (especially red meat) 2) turn off your wifi at night/when you're not home 3) repair your electronics and furniture instead of buying new whenever possible 4) take care of your stuff to make them last as long as possible 5) when you have to buy, buy second hand (or repackaged) when possible
@bluekimchiandrea4476

Growing up poor, we did all of these habits. We didn't have the electronics we did now, but I remember as a kid being annoyed that I had to always plug the TV back in before watching!

Love the idea, but to be honest, I can't really relate. In my 3rd world country...we usually finish our food and do all to save electricity including unplugging and turning off all but the bare necessities of lights (although it's more for economy than saving than saving the planet). Washing machines don't usually come with warm water settings and most people hang dry their clothes anyway. Even many that DO have driers dryers still partially air dry their clothes after. The idea of leaving the faucet running while you're brushing your teeth is absurd. Do people really do that? The recycling business though, I completely agree. We probably have similar stats to yours. It was interesting though to learn our differences. Your "campaign" for a greener lifestyle is very admirable and I hope the message reaches more people.

I wash my hair in my sink, and it has allowed me to cut back water usage per wash from before 6 gallons in shower (this just hair washing alone, not including body showering) to now 2 gallons in sink. Also allows me to wash my scalp/hair more thoroughly (before I couldn't get all the shampoo rinsed with just the shower head), I'm able to wash my hair with cold water without freezing my body. Give it a try, especially helpful for those with super long hair 🌴

Perfect video! Sometimes I thought I was the only one feeling this way, anxious about the future we are not preserving, in Brazil we are living in dark times losing the Amazon, it is difficult to explain to the people around us that we don't need everything, we don't need to consume so much, what we need is to learn to live in balance with nature and not dominate it
@kirafeara
@kirafeara Год назад
💔 idk what to say how I feel, what you said makes me sad and I feel for you and the others living in more dire climates/locations. I am privileged enough to live in a well-populated city in the US. I feel guilty, even tho it’s out of my control, and wish more people cared. There’s a huge disconnect and nobody actively thinks about the impact on the planet. Sorry for my anxiety/adhd rant lol
@1hakury
@1hakury Год назад
@@kirafeara I understand and unfortunately the USA is the most consumerist country in the world and they spread that with a lot of influence from that culture, but as WE are trying to change so we can take small steps, I love to see how it's working for me. When I do/choose something sustainable people laugh, but the second or third time they're curious, the fourth time they're probably like, "Are you still on this shit?", but when you keep doing it they start looking at you with admiration or definitely thinking you are crazy hahah I like to give the world a chance and for people to see how good choices can make a difference

In Germany, it's actually wasteful to wash your waste before recycling and they tell people to stop doing it, because there's no need to waste water and power to clean it. It's actually so tiring and confusing that there are no universal rules for recycling, even within the same country. Now I know there are different given circumstances and possibilities because of different recycling methods/facilities, but I think it would help so much in clearing the confusion that people face

🌴 I love this video and stand by everything in it. But with the recycling thing… is it worth using water to clean/rinse an item in order to recycle it? I’m sure there’s info/data out there about this but I haven’t looked into it. Like if I use a jar of peanut butter and then have to use soap and water to clean it before I can recycle it, was it worth the water used in order to recycle? Or should we just throw “dirtier” items in the regular trash? 🤔
@LiahYoo
@LiahYoo Год назад
Yes, most recycling facilities would advise us to wash/rinse before recycling otherwise it can contaminate the whole other recyclables in the mix I heard :) I always try to do so too!
@kirafeara
@kirafeara Год назад
@@LiahYoo that’s not what I was asking about!! Lol. I know most recycling programs only take clean/dry items. But water usage and waste is a factor when deciding to wash/rinse an item in order to recycle it
@mindyp7256
@mindyp7256 Год назад
I have asked about this before in an ecology class and I was told to just try to control the amount of water you’re using. You don’t need a huge amount of water to wash most things, and try to mechanically get as much gunk off as possible before using the water. Try to reuse water if you can to wash multiple things at once. If you wash your dishes by hand, use your dirty dish water to wash recyclables. Basically, be smart with the water you use!

🌴 i wish recycling in malaysia would be as easy as when i was in christchurch, nz. It’s hard to implement due to lack of awareness, recycle bins are always found full of nonsense items. We still have a long way to go.

Great video! I'm surprised you didn't mention cutting out meat and dairy. We can read on Wikipedia: According to a 2022 study quickly stopping animal agriculture would provide half the GHG emission reduction needed to meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 2 °C. The global food system is responsible for one-third of the global anthropogenic GHG emissions, of which meat accounts for nearly 60%. A significant reduction in meat consumption will be essential to mitigate climate change, especially as the human population increases by a projected 2.3 billion by the middle of the century.

The tips you offer are manageable and creative, but Liah, how can you talk about methane, food waste, and water use without mentioning how problematic eating animals is? Your line is vegan... The world's most comprehensive study on farming and it's effects on climate, undertaken by Oxford University, confirms that *the* most effective individual act we can make in combating climate change is switching to a vegan diet. We'd also be a lot kinder to lots of animals who we share this world with.
