hi I've been playing off and on for years now, but i could never figure out why my slap technique was poor, trying one of your lessons has lead me to one of the reasons, I'm muting with my right hand all the time! here's me trying to follow the lesson and it dawned on me that the was ive always muted was how i was taught with the fleshy part of my right hand thumb. now at 66 years old, im gonna find it hard to change but im gonna have a go, wish me luck😅 ive only just stumbled across you, Scott, but great vids, nicely laid out easy to follow(specially the slow bit) im looking forward to finding more

I like the way you teach that lesson! First you are playing the whole riff to understand what is it about and then you break down the patterns with slow, medium and full speed. It's unbelievable but now i can play that shit...much appreciated Scott!

You are - again - getting great tone . I believe that is a Jackson , possibly a short scale . If that's the case , between the strings , hands and amp it's working ! This lesson shows you can make an interesting groove without being repetitive , simplistic or monotomous . Thanks 👍 .

Thanks Bill for the comment - much appreciated! The bass is a rare thing called a Hurricane, a Japanese built bass from the 80s. I believe it came from a factory that built instruments for other manufacturers - maybe Jackson was one of them hence the similarly.

Scott : In the 1970's I owned several short scale basses , all Gibson . The EB-O , EB-3 and Les Paul Triumph . Unfortunately , in that era , most strings were flat wound . Then Half Round came out . I believe the only bright strings available were Rotosound . The EB-O was a mudslide , coupled with 15" or 18" speakers - used by most players . The Ampeg and Traynor 8 - 10" cabs were fairly new to the industry . It was not uncommon to hear " you have a Gibson fart bass " . Things have changed . Check out the GR Bass line . They have carbon fiber cabinets that are advertised as feather weight . I remember lugging folded horn cabinets with an 18" speaker up and down stairs . And a Fender 400 Head - over 90 LBS. And show up at work for 8 AM after a gig !

Scott, have you got any pick lessons, I’ve just started using a pick having only ever used finger and slap... it’s not easy for someone who never played guitar. I noticed you used a pick on some BIg Country tunes live....

Please remove Mark King’s name from this video. Study him a lot more, (hint: younger days, a lot more percussive w/double slaps dead notes, after World Machine days, more song oriented but still challenging bass lines), and just because you slap & pop that doesn’t make it close to a Mark King line.
@ScottWhitley
@ScottWhitley Год назад
Thanks so much for the comment, Michael! Hard to know how to respond to this, as Mark King was my main source of inspiration coming up as a young player - I listened to almost nothing else for years! Even today, my first port of call when deciding what music to listen to is Level 42. :) In my teen years I was probably bent on trying to emulate Mark's tone and technique as best I could, but as one matures as an artist, one hopes that you take what you've learned and make it your own. This is where I like to think I'm at now - I'm Scott Whitley, not a Mark King tribute. And I'm very happy with that. Regarding the lick in this lesson - I'll have to listen to it as it's a long time since I made the video, but guaranteed (pun not intended lol) it'll be ideas lifted from his early playing... Anyways, thanks again for the comment - you weren't to know...
