Easy to Make Dust Collector for the DeWalt DW735 Planer

It doesn't get much easier than this, especially when you see how well this works. The Dewalt 735 planer is a very common model and it has the advantage of having a blower built in to push the shavings out, so this is a solution that will only work with that particular planer.

And for any other planer without a blower, you could easily sub the filter out for a fitting for your dust collector. I may just use that idea for my HF collector I've been meaning to put a separator on. Thanks John!

I just built something very similar to this, based on your video - and it works amazingly. I used a 4" hose, and the air filter I just changed out of my Car, and 3D printed the hose attachment angle, and used a bin that is thick walled and was kicking around for years - came out amazingly and not a single scrap of dust comes out of it. Thank you very much @John Heisz

So good to see you uploading material again John. This is rather timely as I am in the process of reassessing my dust collection. Do I really need a 3hp motor running for the planer. Not really as that blower is pretty powerful. Do I need a 3hp motor for the sander. No, pressure is too low so a shop vac is better. I need to make a thein separator and buy a new, small shop vac as my large one has died. Despite replacing the bearing it does not sound healthy. Time to build a separator I I have one on the 3hp dust collector)but like in your original plan, have a "proper" air filter to keep the fine dust out of the shop. The 3hp dust collector does a great job at the table saw, general clean up and will be used on the CNC.
@xxxxMaddnesSxxxx
@xxxxMaddnesSxxxx 2 года назад
FYI, rocker's dust right quick connect handle has an adjustable port under it that you can open up when using a sander so the flow and pressure is not restricted. might be able to DIY something to the same effect for sanding if you don't want to spend the money on a new vac.

Thanks for the video! I have been stuck trying to figure out what to do about my Dewalt 735. I had it attached to my 2 stage dust collection where I also would run a high velocity shop vac (~200 CFM) from the other side. But the air flow from the blower on the Dewalt planer (~500 CFM?) exceeds what the shop vac can suck up, and it actually keeps pushing in the ball from the inside of my vacuum and locking it up. (so frustrating) I decided that the dewalt 735 just needs a separate dust collection and let the blower do its job, it doesn't need additional suction. So, I'll setup something similar to what you have... this video is great, thank you!

I imagine the radius of the lower circle has to be smaller than the bin, so the sawdust goes there? If so, what is that gap size, surely has to be in a certain range, too big or too small won't work well.

Aerospace engineer with a background in high pressure hydraulics, aircraft pressurization, and iso 10k clean room operations. This is quite clever from an economics standpoint…I will be doing this with a slight modification to the filter design to make it more easily replaceable. The one single thing i could possibly think of to add is some kind of low pressure gate valve at the entry point to minimize dust when disconnecting and moving to a disposal location outside.,,but honestly that’s probably overkill!

I keep trying to figure the precise design to mount my wet vac directly to a larger can with a Thien baffle or cyclone. I think your design gets me there! The engine/lid can "just" be spaced off the top with a many-a-gon angle-cut plywood cylinder, then the hole through one side for the pipe. Awesome.

First I’ll second all the welcome backs - that could not have been any fun (I work in IT, I KNOW it wasn’t any fun) Second a technical question I was hoping you’d toss into the voice over …. What is the gap between Thein Baffle and side of bucket ? Would any sort of partial center (spacer) column cover make any difference? I’ve never built one of these Thein style separations - but I recently got a DW735 and I CAN attest - holding the barrel behind it doesn’t work (LOVED that clip!!) Thanks John

The dust spins around the edge of the bucket, then loses momentum and falls through the gap to the bottom of the bucket rather than going up the centre hole to the filter

Are you satisfied with this planer. Is it the type 1 or the 12 ? It seems that since it is made in China (type 12) instead of Taiwan several users have experienced problems with the engine of this new version. You can see the type right next to the serial number. I'm asking you this because it's on a big discount here in Canada (-$220 off the regular price $899 canadian dollar). The demonstrator in store was Type 1 but the one I just bought is Type 12 so I wonder if I will return it. Has anyone experienced any issues with type 12 vs type 1? THANKS !
