Easy Trick to Double Food Production from Your Garden

It is easy to double your food production from your vegetable garden with no extra cost. The trick is to look at your garden differently than just harvesting the fruit and disposing or composting the plant. By harvesting the greens from my broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage in addition to the "fruit" I got enough food for an additional 30 meals! You can use the greens in green smoothies, salads or for juicing. The greens may even have more nutrients than the fruit. I share how I clean the veggies to get rid of bugs, pesticides and make the produce last much longer in the refrigerator.

David, I cleaned up the veggie bed this weekend, and harvested a bunch of large cauliflower leaves. Your video was right on time! I ran them all through my NutriBullet, and didn't lose a thing except the ribs to the compost pile. My recipe: 1c. cauliflower leaves, 1/2 of a medium, seedless English cucumber, 1/2 lg. ripe banana, 1 scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder, 1 c. Frozen Tropical Fruit (mango, pineapple, strawberries) - about 5-6 pcs., 1 tsp. Manuka Honey, 1/2 c water. Hit the Bullet for 10 seconds, remove the cup and invert to force the liquid downward, return to Bullet and pulse for 20 seconds more, or until the leaves drop down and are emulsified. I freeze my Green Smoothies in those tall insulated Hot/Cold cups with the lids and straws. Take one out the night before to thaw in the fridge for breakfast. NOTE: The pulp and liquid will separate if Smoothie is not consumed right away, but a quick 10 second pulse in the Bullet will bring it all back together. Enjoy!

This year I'm doing both my own garden as well as working at a farm w/ a family. They've been working this land for generations, now fully organic. I mentioned the Mittleider system to the Mrs. and she said it wouldn't be "organic." I tried to explain that the "fertilizers" were basic elements, not man-made concoctions, to no success. As I go along with the reading, I'll slowly add a bit here and there in conversations.

You may have mentioned this and I missed it, but have you tried dehydrating them? You could steam, dehydrate and then turn them into a powder for very long term use. Another option you might look into is fermenting to help get probiotics into your diet. Think sauerkraut.

You asked about what we thought is the best juicer for juicing green leaf vegetables. If you have lot of money the "Norwalk Juicer" is probably the best. However, something more in a price range that most health conscious people can afford is the "Omega Juice Extractor, Model: VRT 350, Made by: Omega Products". Look on Amazon.com for it. A man by the name of Norman W. Walker, D. Sc. wrote a book that you might be interested in titled: Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices". It is probably available at Amazon.com also. In his book, and I am quoting from that book, on page 10, he states, "In my experiments, I have found that the toxic sprays are retained in the fibers of vegetables and are not present in the fiber free juices." So, this would indicate that after you juice a vegetable, you should also strain the juice through a "Tea strainer", why? because a tea strainer is very fine and will remove even more of the pulp (unless you are growing 100% organic). If you would like to discuss this more visit my channel at Old Alabama Gardener and send me a PM (private message). BTW, I just ran a batch of fermented cabbage/juice through my VRT 350, man it tastes good!

The Cabbage greens can be chopped up and wilted down add a little cheese maybe some bacon, great meal. The other leaves can be chopped up cooked with potatoes and mashed together. Hot food is much more satisfying than cold and can be done after TSHTF.

Another suggestion, would be to cook these as GREENS, slowly simmering them with a little apple cider vinegar, onions & bacon (or hamhocks or other cheap tough cut) that way you are able to get the fiber as well. Juicing will help you extract the micro nutrients, but leaves behind the macro nutrients. Another option is to blend them in the vitamix, so again you are getting ALL of the plant. IF you find the greens bitter, removing the ribs helps quite a bit, depending on the green. As for juicers, there are FAST or SLOW juicers. For a fast juicer, I recommend the Breville 800jexl or the Fountain Elite. These have consistently been rated among the best juicers on the market.

I always eat the greens, that's the best part of growing your own broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, etc, we could eat the greens while waiting to harvest. They are never sold in the grocery stores, and they taste so good. Glad that you're eating them instead of putting them in the compost.

I have a Breville Juice Fountain. I mostly juice apples, oranges, kale, Spinach, ginger, pineapple and carrots with it. It keeps a lot of the pulp compared to other juicers which is a bonus in my eyes. From what I understand though, is the vita-mix will do it all if you don't want to loose any of the "meat" of the fruits and veggies.

Hi LDS Prepper, For juicing green leafy veggies, a horizontal masticating slow juicer will give you the maximum yield. I use the Omega NC800HDS daily, as I drink about a litre of "green juice" each day. For juicing fruits for "fruit juice" (as opposed to blending them for smoothies), I like to use the Omega 350VRT juicer, which is a vertical masticating slow juicer. The 350VRT also juices hard fruits and veggies such as apples, carrots and the like exceptionally well. I have found that the horizontal juicer has the effect of "ringing " the juice out of green leafy veggies the way you would ring water out of a wash cloth. If you think about it, you get the most water out of a wash cloth when you ring it out horizontally as opposed to vertically. With fruit, on the other hand, because it tends to be so plump and juicy to begin with, I have found that using a horizontal juicer causes the juice to flow back towards the auger creating a mess, whereas with the vertical juicer, the juice flows straight down because of gravity. I hope this helps!

Omega 8004 refurbished is what I got because 1) it's a masticating juicer, 2) cheapest i could find, 3) easier to clean. I imagine others like to use it to make other things like nut butters, jam, baby food, or sorbets.

Another thing you could do with the leaves is to blend them up in your vita-mix with a little bit of water or juice, and pour that pulp into ice cube trays, freeze them, and then pop them out & store them in a zip lock bag in your freezer...that way, they don't go to waste, they act as ice in your smoothie, and you get to keep all that good insoluble fiber that you lose with juicing.

I have the Omega 8006 juicer and we love it! We made BlackBerry jam this last summer and this juicer took out all the little seeds. They've also come down in price since Omega's newer juicer has been released. (We also just moved to Houston recently from Idaho and are looking forward to the better growing season here!)

Hey, I have the Omega VRT 350HD and it's great, absolutely no complaints. It is also a masticating juicer and works particularly well on leafy greens, as well as any other type of produce. I have noticed that it does need some help if you're juicing citrus or any other softer fruit exclusively, but I think that may be the case for any masticating juicer. (I don't often juice just one thing, but when I do I just add a carrot to help get things going again if needed.) The yield of juice that comes out is great too, and the pulp is almost bone dry. Very happy with it. I bought it off of amazon, because it was cheaper for me as I live in Canada, rather than their site. They have a 10 year warranty on them as well, customer service is good as well. I had a piece crack (my fault) and lost my plunger. They replaced the piece and gave me a plunger at no cost.

Check out the Breville Juicer. I'm thinking of doing the 10 day juice fast like that in the documentary "Fat Sick & Dead". That is the brand juicer they use and at one point they mention how good that juicer is. One thing they mention in particular is the large 3" inlet to stuff the food into. Even to the point of complete smaller apples but also siad it works great with large leafs like kale. Sure would work great with your leaves too. It's a little more expensive but look to be a very quality built and designed system. I think they run from $100-150

You better start planting if you plan to eat produce only from what you grow : banana, pineapple, blueberries, cherries, etc . I know it would be difficult eating just what is in season and what is grown locally but that is what our ancestors had to do . All other produce was for those very rare and special occasions . That is a lofty goal and one that I set for myself even though I am far from accomplishing it . I do have rabbits and hens so far and working on getting them to produce . A garden is next .

I like your thinking in that we should not waste good quality food items that we have grown ourselves. I do have a question about your vegetable cleaning solution. What is the benefit that is seen from using colloidal silver in your washing preparation? The other ingredients you use should be more than sufficient in the washing process. Everything I have read about colloidal silver seems to indicate that long term use is actually detrimental.

@Lemonz1989 10 лет назад
Justgivemethetruth I use around 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar (or maybe a bit less) to clean leaf vegetables with, in a small tub. I let it sit for maybe 15 to 30 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. It kills larger insects like earwigs that hide between the cracks, and vinegar is also supposedly antiseptic as well. It seems to work well - never had any problems with it. :)

Great idea! How long does the juice that your making keep? Does it lose any nutritional value the longer it sits? I would agree-- the Vitamix is simply the best mixer on the market. We use ours for all sorts of things, expecially for processing tomatoes-- skin and all-- for sauce in the summer.

Why use the colloidal silver? I've heard some nasty stuff about it. There are many plants with antimicrobial properties that you could grow yourself.
@brainplay8060
@brainplay8060 10 лет назад
Colloidal silver has antiseptic properties. Unfortunately, many misunderstand older text and get this confused with antibiotic properties. This leads many to erroneously view it as a cure all. Using it as a non-alcohol, non-toxic, anti-microbial substance to clean food or even wounds is just fine. Putting it in liquids to preserve against microbial growth is just fine. It is something to consider as a long term storage and emergency substitute for hydrogen peroxide in a SHTF situation. Daily intakes as a method of staving off disease has little scientific grounding. The number of studies in favor of it is drowned out by peer reviewed studies that show no benefit from daily ingestion or combating diseases already manifested in the body. It doesn't cause any health issues although it can turn your skin purplish/blue for a while. The skin issue is the only "nasty" thing about it. Well that and people who use it instead proper medical supplies when on hand.
