I got almost every one of this, thanks to you and also Laine over at Our Restoration Nation , and because of living in a remodeled 1871/1898 called a “1910 Folk Gothic” which wasn’t! Now in a c 1905 Vic 1-1/2 story bungalow with an Art Nouveau arch, a columned colonnade, a turret room, stained glass, unpainted woodwork, 2 wood toned t&g 3-1/4”wood floors, and pocket doors, along with an oriole window and 2 bays!

After watching Laine & Kevin for over a year, and discovering Brent here, I'm so well informed about houses! I'm in a 1931 Spanish Mission Style home, with Territorial accents (custom house). Unpainted woodwork sold me (gum wood), along with the glass doorknobs. :)

This was definitely fun! I believe many old municipal buildings and large churches were some flavor of Richardson Romanesque. Many years ago I found a postcard my great-grandmother's brother had sent to her in England; it was of the old Los Angeles County Courthouse, which was built in 1891. I'd never seen it before and was surprised at the huge 'brick pile' with the giant tower. My Dad grew up in Los Angeles and remembered when it was torn down due to earthquake damage. The 'new' Courthouse, the one you can see in the old Perry Mason TV show, was built in 1958.

Great “quiz”. Throw in the possibility 80 or 100 years of renovation and I suspect many houses were once a particular style.

Just found your channel, we’re in the process of purchasing a 1900 built Victorian. I think it’s a “folk” style that’s had some details changed over the years. Very helpful channel to learn about these older homes.

Hello Brent, Thanks for this video! I'm in the UK, and have been recently trying to understand historical house styles/design in the USA. This video and others have been really useful. I'm surprised that your discussion and description of these styles seems to be all based on exterior decoration - when considering equivalent italianate, neoclassical and gothic revival styles here, it's also common to look at the internal layout. Is that something that separates styles in victorian US homes, or do the layouts stay pretty similar? From your examples, many seem to follow a fairly classical plan, with shingle-style appearing to become more irregular.

Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. The quick answer is that with mass manufacturing after 1870, many interiors all begin to look the same and it is very difficult to tell the difference between a Queen Anne interior and a 2nd empire. Moldings in catalogs at this time are not labeled by style and many casings look the same except for subtle changes like the addition of a bead or cove. I hope that helps.

Hi Brent, I am a beginner and hoping to learn more about Victorian homes. Other than your channel (you're doing amazing work!) are there books that you recommend for beginners like me? Thanks so much.

I would go and visit Victorians. You might also try Field guide to American Houses.

What is that style of the house in the thumbnail if someone knows? I think I fell n love with it.

Haha, it is kind of a mess as far as style goes. I couldn't find a direct style so I asked google, apparently Twains biographer called it "part steamboat, part medieval fortress and part cuckoo clock". I think there is some Gothic in there as well. Thanks for the question.

😆 🤣 lol. The houses today, are definitely in the "sometimes it just isn't any style" of house. I do not like these prefabricated cookie cutter looking structures. Extremely poor quality (especially for the cost) and just an eyesore on society. There are subdivision after subdivision after subdivision of pretty much the same 6 houses. Just flipped right to left or exteriors skip a bit on siding, shutter and shingle colors.

I would say there are very few victorian houses in America. There might be American houses built in the victorian period but they would be American.
