Little Bit looks like she was eating more basil leaves than she was putting in the basket 🙂. She is such the cutie---especially how she just loves to help and watch mom rolling out the pie dough and everything else kitchen related. The boys are a never ending pleasure to watch growing up on the farm and how they pitch right in with chores and all of the other (sometimes unpleasant) goings on. Y'all are raising them right. Now, about that beard. . . . .😏

Meg, when you made that little tart with the leftover pie crust you took me back in time. When I was a little girl my grandma lived with us and she baked a lot of pies. Each time she made a pie she used the leftover pie crust and sprinkled it with butter and cinnamon sugar and baked it for my brothers and me. What a lovely memory you brought up for me. Also, thank you for telling what you put in your mayo. I gave up making it because I never liked the taste of the recipe I had...I'm going to try yours! Thank you to you and Ben, I love your videos.

Watching Buggie watch you bake brings back wonderful memories! I stayed with a neighbor lady while my mother worked. (Yes, some moms did work in 1963 - it preserved my mother’s sanity. 🤣) That lady was a wonderful baker, and I loved to sit on a tall stool and watch her do her magic. I can still remember the thrill I got when she let me use the fork that flattened the peanut butter cookies. 😁🤣. I think my love of cooking and baking stems from those memories. You never know what interaction with a child will light a spark in them. 🥰

I was wondering what Meg was gonna do with the left over pie crust. Making the sorta pie was new for me. My mom always rolled it out, smeared it with butter and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. After baking it's like a giant elephant ear. A nice little treat while we waited for the pie to get done! Loved seeing the kids eating basil as they plucked the leaves!

My grandmother used to pickle beef tongue. A farmer down the road used to give it to her when they butchered a beef. Their family never liked it. Grandma and my uncle Willie loved to have beer with their pickled tongue sandwiches and if I was lucky, I'd get a call, if I was at my mother's. We liked it too. I was more than happy to furnish the beverage. You both bring back so many good memories I have and was fortunate to spend a lot of time with my grandparents.

One if my Great Uncles was freed from a POW situation. When everyone got back to the ship they git to eat anything they wanted. Knowing that his abused stomach would immediately refuse anything he put into it he requested a gallon of mayonnaise. He sat and ate it all, a bit at a time. Every now and then he made a deposit in the head, but he wasn't returning chunks the way every else was. He knew it wouldn't hurt coming back out so he ate mayo as his first "meal" once freed. He told that story until he passed away of old age. And he ate mayonnaise the same length.

Buggy's voice is heart-melting. When she smiles, waves, and says 'bye" my heart feels like it's gonna pop. ~ Loved the shots of everyone sitting around the table picking the leaves off the basil branches. And, like you Meg, I MUCH prefer my homemade mayonnaise to store-bought. I don't care what the brand name is, nothing beats the jar I make myself. Ever since I bought the Thrive Market coconut oil version, it's the only thing I buy refined coconut oil for. For a while, I used 1/2 avocado and 1/2 coconut oil, but 100% coconut has become my favorite.

When I was home alone as a teen and then later in college, I ate mayonnaise sandwiches. Just 2 slices of bread and a thick layer of Kraft mayo. Or a foldover sandwich- a thick layer of mayo on one slice, and fold it over, in half. As an adult, if I want to eat a spoonful of mayonnaise, there's no one to stop me. And I do. Just yesterday, in fact.

Haha, I'm used to cow tongue because I was a grocery clerk for years. The market I worked for sold it along with tripe/tripas (cow intestines), pig feet, sweetbreads (brains) and whole pig heads. I haven't eaten any of those, however because I didn't know how to prepare them. My teenage granddaughter informed me she loved lingue (tongue) sandwiches from our Mexican market. I'll have to try it sometime. I agree, they look weird, but all of the parts are good for something great!👏❤️

I’m making pesto tomorrow. I’m going to dice up some zucchini, mushrooms, onions, sauté the vegetables and add the pesto and serve it over noodles. Then have chicken with it. I’m definitely looking forward to dinner tomorrow. I make my pesto pretty much the same way. I was told not to add the cheese when freezing the pesto but add it to the dish before serving. Have a blessed day.

That tomato pie looks delicious- definitely going to try it. When I was little my Grandma would let me roll out the extra pie crust dough, we’d brush with melted butter, sprinkle w/ cinnamon & sugar, cut into strips and roll up. Bake on a cookie sheet for 10-15 minutes while the pie was cooking. We called them pinwheel cookies. Lots of good memories. Sending hugs and blessings.

We spent the summer at my Grandmas house one summer. She made all of those things like the pies, the cinnamon crisps, apple sauce, bread and jam, dried beef, and all of the other goodies you would find on a farm. I have very fond memories of it all.

Have you guys thought about putting together a cook book mixing old recipes and new homestead recipes? I would be interested in that!

Love your kitchen videos!! If you ever want to deviate from using walnuts in your pesto, try sunflower seed kernels. I love it! And if you use the roasted/salted kernels definitely taste before adding more salt. My son in law is allergic to all tree nuts, so I have had to get creative. Love everything you guys do!! 🥰

Ben and his one liners always cracks me up! "Tongue is tasty"!🤣😆😂 You're so funny, Ben! The pesto looked beautiful! I was wishing I could pull up a chair and have tomato pie and a slice of cherry pie for dessert...great lattice work on the pie, Meg!😘 I'm going to try making some of your mayo soon! Do you add a little salt? No new piglets? I sure hope that mama pig's babies are okay as she's laboring to have them.🙏 Bye Buggie! Glad you got to help pick "matoes"! p.s. Meg, I love mayo too. I used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches when I was a little girl! Now I add a fresh tomato slice to my mayo sandwich! Tasty!
