Another great presentation of an important topic. I think most people underwater. They don’t water long enough and the moisture never gets very deep. The roots then stay near the surface and the plants are more drought sensitive and they don’t get nutrients deep in the soil. Your tip of checking with a finger is so great for new gardeners

Excellent video Veronica. Getting the soil right and watering done, both effectively and efficiently is probably the two biggest challenges I've had as a grower. It's funny because anybody would think it's the easiest sides to growing but it can be very difficult, and if your soil and irrigation aren't right, you're on a losing battle from square one.

I also like to garden organically by feeding the microbial life in the soil and letting mother nature do the work for us. Keep up the good work and the great videos and try not to listen to all the idiots comments just keep doing what your doing its obviously working! Happy gardening!!🌻🌱

For exactly all the reasons you mentioned about fungus and pests I don't straight water the top, always just mist. Something I learned that might help, if you ever get slugs get some geese, geese will run around, eat up all your slugs and then go back to waddling about.

Btw, your talents are amazing. I now reside in Central Florida and gardening here compared to NY has been very difficult to grab onto. Different growing seasons, smaller area and have to grow in pots, heat, humidity and insects to contend with. I did try wicking pots this spring and it worked incredibly well. I used to have to water 3 - 4 times a day. Now every 3-4 days. Sometimes 6-7 days. I need all the help you can give me.

I like morning watering by hand for establishment too. My go to is vintage fan sprayers, which i think there is really no functional substitute for. I'm very conscious of competition living in an extreme Mediterranean climate where there is no rain in the growing season, often not even much rain in the establishment phase of spring crops. Beds with lots of weeds get sucked dry at a remarkably fast rate. I like dirt mulches quite a bit for infrequent watering as the soil stays moist right under the dirt mulch for a long time, but it works best when the plants have a chance to establish first. It's interesting to read old gardening stuff before everyone had access to endless water, hoses and piles of free mulch material. It was mostly about cultivation, managing water and dirt mulching. It also allows the soil to warm up. I had to pull any mulch back just to get the soil warm this year, or I'll be behind a couple of weeks even full out in the open sun. I find that all gardening methods and approaches have their downsides and pluses, and most importantly ideal situations for application.

Those rows are looking nice and verdant. Excellent ideas about weeds, composting them in situ. I think I will treat myself to a hori hori. Happy gardening!

Thank you for so many garden ideas. I have after the freeze I will be getting back in the no till wood chip garden. This year I will be putting in the beer traps for the slugs.

As I weed-eat and cut the yard, I gather up the grass clippings. Layering around my squash plants.

We haven't been having much concern about watering this spring in Missouri. It's been raining a lot. We'll see how the summer goes.

I've recently discovered the "magic" of watering my raised beds using an olla. When spaced correctly, they allow me to water my plants with just the right amount of water. When I combine ollas with a nice layer of mulch, I'm getting some great results. Although they are kind of expensive to buy, I have found an easy DIY method using terra cotta planters that's relatively easy and very inexpensive. Veronica, have you ever used ollas in any of your ground crops?

Hi Veronica, i love the video's! Nice garden but i miss the flowers, maybe a couple of dahlia's? They say the flowers are edible but more important they give tons of harvestable flowers. Kids love thema.

Mother Nature has gone quite overboard with her watering from the top on our farm. A part of our back has been underwater since late January, as we have had 7 or 8 flooding rains and 20 or more non-flooding rains. Can you offer advice for countering too much rain and not enough sun? I think Spring decided to go into self-quarantine.

On dry days, I often pull weeds, shake the dirt off, and lay them between the crop rows. Don't lay perennial weeds like that, of course.

I actually only 'top' water, when I have to, in the late evening around dusk, just because it gets so hot in southern California the amount of transpiration from watering in the morning just dries out the garden, food crops don't typically have that waxy coating or 'hairy' leaves or other type of transpiration protection that native California plants have. Slugs get to be a problem so I have to spend a couple of days 'slug hunting' but I'd rather do that then watch the garden wither. Have you given any more thought to starting up the live q&a again? Great video once again, see you next week!

Have you ever used hair as a method to prevent deer or rabbits from eating your plants? I have when I gardened in NY. They would attack my green bean plants when they were only a few inches tall and when I got my hair cut I would collect it and sprinkle on the plants. After the rabbits got a taste of that they would no longer return to the garden.

I’m a huge subsurface irrigation fan but well said.

Thanks for the great information and delivery as always. I do a lot of gardening and wanted to know how you keep the insects off your plants. Are you using any insecticides ordo you go with mosquito/insect nets or something else? I'm using the nets, which work great, but they aren't all that fun or easy to work with, especially when it comes time to pick. Thanks and phenomenal channel.

Hi Veronica - I notice you seem to have a lot of tree cover over your new space. Do you anticipate any issues with your sun loving crops? I have about 200 square feet of growing space and close to 1/2 of it is shaded until at least noon by a beautiful Horse Chestnut Tree. It gives me wonderful flowers and leaves for my compost but makes growing sun loving summer crops a challenge. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for your videos! I’ve learned a lot!

Slugs, so how do you control them in the garden?

Hi Veronica I had a question regarding my pepper plants. So I have a pepper plant and I didn’t grow it from seed but I brought it a couple months back and it seems to have another plant growing right next to it so I wanted to know if I should take it out and put it in it’s own space or just leave it
