Red Fox Why do all mantids die so young, damn.

+Noodles37UK because they are seasonally productive organisms

Yeah but you and i have both owned them. I've owned several mantids, but no Orchids. You can clearly see the exceptional qualities these little aliens have. Some one i knew described them as the eagles and hawks of the insect hiearchy. Insect royalty. To give each individual just 12 or 14 months is a shame. And they die just suddenly over a period of, a week, i'd say. They stop eating, then make their way to the bottom of the tank to die.

+Noodles37UK yes I own 4 orchids they're beautiful however orchid mantids only live around 8-12 months.

MantisDude101 They are said to be difficult to feed, as they rely on butterflies i think. I know they are happy with waxworms (name?). I think mantids are incredible.

I didn't know a "bush cricket" sounded like a mouse when it gets attacked.
@starsfalldown1234567
@starsfalldown1234567 6 лет назад
JesseMusicc it's a katydid and not a cricket and no they don't sound like mice OKCUR!
@Marcus-gw4bb
@Marcus-gw4bb 6 лет назад
Actually i was sceptical at first cuz that is clearly a katydid but i thought to myself, this is freaking Sir David Attenborough narrating. He can't possibly get it wrong right? So i checked and katydid can also be called bush cricket or long-horned grasshopper.

I really hate it when the BBC adds those stupid sound effects to these shows. I thought they would be a bit more professional than other channels.

JesseMusicc I asked a Foley guy about this. They justify it with, "Well, when you squeeze a bug suddenly, sometimes you hear the surprise squeak of air escaping the spiracles." Whatever...

The orange and black is an orchid nymph. It easily would fit on the tip of your finger and the katydid would've had an easy meal if it had any desire to eat it. Also orchids don't actually live on orchid flowers. They have not adapted to camoflague but to imitate. As long as they are on a plant they will look like a flower and pollinators will come directly to them. When in this staged set up, they are shown in a different way. They do not typically eat ground prey in nature. Only pollinators like flies, wasps, bees, etc. It's cool to keep them with orchids in captivity so you can see how well they blend in, but for a nature documentary, it's very inaccurate.
