Erik Lamkin describes himself as a guy with a HUGE appetite that LOVES food, but his path to RU-vid eating was not easy. Erik first tried a competitive eating competition as an attempt to overcome his fear of food and it proved to him that eating a large amount of food in one sitting wouldn’t change his body. Today, Erik the Electric has almost 2 million subscribers on his youtube channel tuning in to watch him eat and follow along in his athletic ventures. What is it like to be an online sensation for the very thing you feared? Is his struggle with food over - or is it an ongoing struggle that he must overcome to pay his bills?

I love watching his videos because I also suffer from an ed but anyone disordered could tell you that this man has bulimia. Exercising is a method of purging, he is actively binging on massive amounts of food and purging it all out. Just because he doesn’t throw up (at least not on camera), doesn’t mean this isn’t bulimia. The worst part is that he’s trapped in it because he’s turned it into a job, and most people have turned a blind eye to the serious side effects this can bring later on in life. As long as this continues, he will never maintain a healthy relationship with food and this saddens me.

He went from average, to obese, to anorexic, to bulimia. Yes, he does exercise to purge, he also throws up (end of the video). Really tragic, as his wife also is a competitive eater. Matt Stonie naturally has a large appetite, from what he is revealing about himself. He trained himself to eat a lot, store it, then digest it out (also purging). So, different people have different abilities and mental health. We have to understand each other and notice issues, as you have done Ghost. 👍🏼

So you’re just going to ignore all of the consistent testing that he has done to keep himself in check? Seems like he’s very on top of his health and is knowledgable enough to keep himself regulated. He’s very transparent about everything he does. To me it sounds like you’re looking for any reason to hate what he’s able to do and be in control of it as well. I think after years of doing this, if his blood panels had concerning results, the he wouldn’t continue doing this type of content. He also mentioned that he doesn’t exercise like he does to “purge”, he does it because it’s healthy physically and mentally for him.

I used to watch Erik. The man traded one eating disorder (ana) for this one where he eats copious amounts of food and exercises to extreme, extreme excess so he can keep doing it (and keep his livelihood because it’s now his job to eat like this so I don’t quite believe his comment that he does it for the audience because I’m sure he would stop or try to if he made nothing from this). Everything is still about food for him and he still has seems to have an ED and decent blood work (currently) doesn’t change that that still seems to be happening mentally rn. He didn’t mentioned it here, but he’s already made a video on his recent gut issues that made him feel ill for a while before it went away for now (which he debated in his video admitting to it that he doesn’t think his challenges caused it or at least had something to do it which was officially when I stopped watching because the denial over whether _digestion issues_ were caused by thousands of food challenges was wild to me). But eating disorders are a life long battle (as are _all_ addictions) so I wish him the best and that he finds another job that pays him as well without risking his eventual physical and current mental health.

Having had an eating disorder for 10 years myself (anorexia, binge eating, non purging bulimia) I just can agree with most of the comments. I „outtrained“ all my calories when I had huge binges over years. Yes, my blood work was roundabout normal for the 8k+ kcal I consumed at least once a week, but due to training that much and the stress all this food caused to my body, my body was under so much stress all the time that I had a lot of other health issues to deal with when I went trough recovery.. most of the damage won’t be visible right now, but he’ll pay his price when he gets older. The sad thing is, that he is trapped in that vicious circle of earning money with this so I guess it’s comprehensible that he tries to sugarcoat what he does

I'm not qualified to talk on the subject of EDs and I hope I don't come off as rude but my interpretation was very different. Maybe he had a reason for emphasizing that he knows what he is doing and that he takes care of himself. Are you familiar with his videos specifically? I am not but he said he's very transparent and shares what he does to stay healthy... I just think it's not completely fair to say, "most of the damage won’t be visible right now, but he’ll pay his price when he gets older." I do see the logic and an element of truth to what you're saying but I think the reality is more complex than your blanket statement. Maybe it's just me but that statement seems to wipe away everything he said and assumes neither he nor his doctor knows what they're talking about. He also never claimed that this is healthy per say but that he is ALSO taking care of himself. I see the similarities but I think there are differences between what he is currently doing and the stress done to ones body during binging/purging/restricting/obsessive exercise. I also think it is unfair to say, "he is trapped in that vicious circle of earning money with this so I guess it’s comprehensible that he tries to sugarcoat what he does." Sure you can assume that is what someone may do and it's possible he is but I think it is unlikely. He seems very self aware and frankly great at communicating his thoughts, feelings and journey. Maybe I'm just in an optimistic mood but he gave me the strong impression of someone who knows who they are and where they're at. Is any of that a fair assessment?

But your metabolism pays a huge toll with yo-yo dieting and fluctuations which is exactly how how he’s maintaining himself. I don't think that he's as bad as you're making him out to be, but I do worry about him sometimes because he also acknowledges in some of his vids that what he does to his body is not healthy at all and is very physically punishing.

Clearly you did not do any research, the term Mukbang (먹방) means eating show and it originates from South Korea. The culture of eating together with families or coworkers is something that is highly respected and enjoyed not just in South Korea, but generally also in the vast parts of Asia. When one is not able to join in the presence of others, they result to visiting and watching online Mukbang streamers so that they may eat at the same time and feel less lonely. There is a saying that indeed, food tastes the best when it is shared, and when you cannot find that similar companionship due to the pandemic or what, then the culture of Mukbang will make sure to make you feel included and not alone. It is a misunderstanding to think that Mukbang is a slap to the face to people who go hungry because if that were the case then you could simply watch something else lol. Food is literally life so you said, so please look at Mukbang with a more positive approach this time.

Sometimes I still have binges not as big as the first ones (the first ones were around 7000 to even 9000 calories, now it´s between 1000 and 3000 calories), but I think it is because I am not eating enough, simply as that. This small binges that happen once two weeks or once a week. I am a teenager and I am 16 years old, I weigh 73kg and my height is of 180cm, I train usually between 3 and 5 times a week, 3 days of those I go to the gym for half an hour. The other days are usually walks or things like that. If someone knows how many calories I should be eating in a day I would appreciate that very much, so I can start eating that amount and through the months stop counting calories for good and be in a 100% good relationship with food. Hey, I have recovered/am recovering from an ED, safe to say I'm at least in remission. I hope you are doing well. Regarding your question about your calorie intake: I would highly recommend that you see a professional, e.g. a dietitian. Your calorie requirements for one day could vary, based on what you've written, between approximately 3000 and 4000 calories. This is an extremely large range, therefore neither I nor any stranger on the internet can tell you the exact amount. It depends on a number of variables such as metabolism, thyroid function, the kind of food you eat and your gut bacteria. The best way of finding the right amount of calories to eat is to try it out. I know this an be stressful, but it will pay off, I promise! If you are uncertain, go talk to a professional, as said, a dietitian or a doctor. They know much more about you than any person writing a comment here. All the best and keep going!

@@redmom9634 Very likely not but he knows his body won't take it much longer. Imagine damage already done to it, things will turn to very bad within 10 or 20 years at most. I noticed it starts happening after 40 years of age, depending on abuse.. I thought about how many things he would have to change in order to "cure" addiction, separating from girlfriend would be one of first, etc. Some people simply can't do it, especially those who started very young like him. Well, reality can be real hard on us, isn't it?

I was exactly like this guy. Was 180lb+ in grade school. Other people saying how fat i was made me want to change. I never became anorexic. Just started counting calories, working out, and running everyday.

Drugs an alcohol is the same way. It's a life long thing. I used to be a opiate addict for many many yrs, I been clean 3yrs now an after this long u have done changed ur life an don't even think about it. But then I hurt myself an almost cut the tip of my finger off, well even tho I ain't thought about getting hi in yrs. I keep thinking of I go to the hospital an they give me drugs will that trigger me on a binge or relapse for a while before I get it together again? If so how long? It's the same issues just a different setting Brodie so we all feel u. The addiction community understands where u come from.

This is quite literally a different form of bulimia - binging and purging, except with obsessive exercise in place of vomiting (although even in this video he does a bit of vomiting too)…

This is actually pretty sad. Although hes been able to become successful and make a living out of this he basically just traded one addiction for another. He should really consider psychotherapy

I honestly don't understand why some people find it interesting to watch other people eat. The mukbang videos, the food challenge videos, etc. Why? Is it because they're eating something you can't eat yourself? Do people get some sort of satisfaction from watching other people eat tons of food in one sitting?
@waterguy1092

To answer your question, yes. I personally don’t watch mukbangs but food challenges are fun to watch, especially spicy food challenges. I enjoy eating food as does most of the world. Watching people try to complete physical challenges is fun.

I love watching mukbangs for entertainment, to get new inspiration seeing what other people eat. It's even more interesting if you already "know" the person and they talk a little about their life and their food, it's a nice way to spend my lunch break while working from home. I don't however watch any food challenge videos. To me, food is and should be enjoyable, mostly healthy, nourishing and watching people stuffing their faces with junk food for clicks doesn't tick any of those boxes for me. Mukbang doesn't mean overeat, it literally translates to broadcast eating, I'm assuming the internet attached the overeating connotation because high calorie challenge eating videos tend to be very popular?

@@redmom9634 I hope he reads your comment. And thank you for being honest...never understood ppl who took joy and pleasure in watching others suffer. I know it's self harm, in Erik's case, but still..it's sad and painful to see suffering (regardless of the 'cause').
