Decided to do something fun and visit the top five oldest restaurants in Los Angeles. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this and recommend others check out these restaurants as well if they find themselves in Los Angeles. None of the restaurants on this list are expensive or have a dress code, so no need to worry and no reservations required.
Most of the food that we discovered at these restaurants include all kinds of different kinds of casual food: sandwiches, french dip, patty melts, salads, seafood, tacos, diner food, beer, bar and pub food, the most amazing onion rings I ever had, and great homemade potato salad. Every place we visited was a lot of fun and well worth a visit!
Here are links to the restaurants:
Magee's Kitchen (established 1917)

Coles French Dip (established 1908)

What a great video. I've been to some old restaurants and bars in LA (Musso and Frank and the Apple Pan come to mind, as well as the late, great Clifton's Brookdale cafeteria. But now I have five new-old places to check out on my next visit to LA!

Thank you! It's one of my first vids so there's a lot I don't like about it that I'm improving on for the next video, but appreciate the kind comments. 😊

I used to have lunch at "The Saugus Cafe" when I lived and worked in Santa Clarita. Goid food, good selection, and pure nostalgia !

Great little place. I love their selection. Even though not much different than most diners I would absolutely go back!

I really enjoyed going to all these restaurants. Which one seemed the most interesting to you that you would want to visit in Los Angeles? Did you enjoy the format of this video? Will post more in the future. Let me know what you want to see more (or less) of!

Thanks for this. I'm a native Angelino, now living in New England. It was nice revisiting some of my old haunts with you. My dad used to take us to Philippe's when we were kids, and his dad used to take him there, when he was a kid. (Dad was born in 1928.) BTW, I'm afraid you were misinformed: 'Philippe' is a French name, and is pronounced 'fil-leep.' It doesn't matter whether you're in France or L.A., that's the only way you say it. 'Felipe', on the other hand, is Spanish. That's pronounced 'fay-lee-pay,' wherever you are. Both are language variants of the name 'Philip'. The classic LA restaurant is 'Philippe' and is pronounced accordingly. Always. Only. Forever. I think the person who told you it didn't matter was trying to be nice. After all, the customer is always right.

You're right! My French buddy corrected me after I published the video. I guess I had misremembered what I heard many years ago. I really should do better research before hand lol 😬 I'm really glad you could revisit your childhood through my video. Seeing things you grow up with still being around is always a nice and nostalgic experience. It's also amazing about your dad and grandfather. Love hearing things like that. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I thought The Original Pantry Cafe was one of the oldest, but it appears it opened in 1924.

Yeah we were thinking about top 10 oldest but the cost and work would have been too much. The Pantry is great though.

If Philippe opened before Cole's, doesn't that answer the question of who invented the French dip? Why yes, it does.

Lol, I mean I guess you can make that argument, but the Idea is that they already existed before the sandwich was invented. That someone had asked for it years after the restaurant opened. I think the story is that the sandwich fell into some juice and the guy said he would eat it anyway and he actually liked it. Again, years after the restaurant opened. They didn't open "because" of the sandwich. One of life's mysteries...

Will keep that in mind for next time! Unfortunately Magees is a tad expensive since they are at farmers market but the sandwiches are pretty damn good! Will need to make some time to go back. Thanks for the comment 😊
