Hi, we are Harriet and Mauro and in February 2021 we bought an abandoned smallholding in Castellón, Spain. In these videos we share our life as we restore and improve our little stone house, learn to grow and preserve our own food, and bring our 4 acres of farmland back to productivity.

Carrot top pesto, broad bean hummus, dried rosehip tea, ground cornmeal, pea and mint dip...your culinary creativity knows no bounds. How fulfilling to nurture yourselves from the fruit of your own labor and nature's generosity!

What a superb,delicious array of fruits and vegetables you have been able to grow and eat through last year, thanks to a lot of of dedication and hard work. But you are absolutely right, there is no need to punish yourself into being perfect at growing everything. Better choose your battles and enjoy growing what you really appreciate and make the most of collaborating with your neighbours.

I adored this video and so did my kids (5 & 7)! It's dreary here in Portland, Oregon, USA and this was inspiring because you reminded me to move with the seasons. It makes me feel better that we're getting just kale and tree collards from our urban backyard garden right now! I also loved that you talked about relying on community for your resiliency and not just focusing on self-sufficiency. That seems both wise and kind to yourself! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

Your harvest baskets look so fresh, colourful and tasty. You compose your greens and fruits and veggies to a living picture of garden art and this is also valid for the dishes. Have you thought about printing and selling the images a poster or a calendar? Of course I would rather take the content of the basket than a paper version ;-) Now I am hungry after watching and definitly need an orange juice at least... Thanks for this inspiring compilation, have a sunny and fruitful winter season 2023!

Wow, you two should be so proud of yourselves. Y'all created a wonderful year!. I have been very impressed. The layout of everything seems so welcoming. You even got the attention of your local paper, that is awesome. I would love to have neighbors like you & Mario. Are you two thinking of starting any businesses other than you tube from the homestead? I can see you making goats milk soap one day. It's a big seller here in the U.S. Veggies boxes, so many ways to make money to help pay for the materials you need to get things the way you want. You two are truly an inspiration. I may be in Texas, but I tell everybody about Little Spanish Farmstead. Looking forward to seeing the vision you have for the coming year! All the best & God bless

Congratulations on more than meeting your challenge! What a satisfying feeling it must be. Being part of a barter economy is definitely a great way of being self sufficient. You’re right that self-sufficiency doesn’t have to mean that you yourself produce everything you consume - as you found, that’s not practical or ideal in many cases. It’s about not having to depend on global supply chains, big chain stores, and lots of shipping in order to eat, and you’ve certainly achieved that.
@emmabertrand3

Wow what an accomplishment for your “Challenge“ to not become a challenge anymore but to have it be a way of life! Definitely something to be proud of! And I totally agree about not striving for 100% self sufficiency. It takes away from the importance of community and supporting those around us. We as human beings were meant to be part of tight knit communities where we all come together to support each other. I love how much you have been doing this with your friends and neighbours, it’s very inspirational. No one can do it all but all as one we can 🥰

This is my favorite video so far. Maybe a challenge for this year take a picture of one meal a day and list ingredients and method( these would be great for youtube shorts. This would give you a recipe book with a little winter time editing to sell next year. Personally I’m really interested in how you gather from the garden and then prepare. Like you say in your video, what you thought was important at the beginning of last year didn’t seem so important now. You are on the cutting edge of how to transition from city life to country life, and you seem to have a simple a clear ability to communicate how and what you are doing. Thank you for your devotion to sharing with us, especially the stuff that doesn’t always go as you want.
