We are Mauro and Harriet and in February 2021 we bought an abandoned smallholding in Castellón, Spain.
We have 1.6 hectares (about 4 acres) of land, with many productive fruit trees including olive, almond, plum, pear, pomegranate, orange, lemon, tangerine, carob and fig. This winter we've been trying to give some of these trees some care and attention, and we wanted to show you a little bit of that!

No Matter What.. Try to keep as many trees as you can. In my opinion we all "GROW SOIL"... Everything that comes from it is a bonus. You cannot go wrong by Mulching, Nature does it season by season. Your doing a great job. One step at a time. Treat your vision & ideas with your passion of the land and future. Thank you for the videos. Love the content.

General rule basically pruning nearly all fruit trees is to cut branches growing towards inner tree and leave 3-4 strong branches with open middle to the tree. Also suggested is to desinfect all cutting tool before going to next tree, not to pass any diseases. When planting new trees careful not put the trunk too deep, especially citrus trees. Good cutting tools are worthwile investments, like Fiskars etc

Top dress with a good mulch 4-5inches at the base of all the trees. This will help to retain moisture and also feed the tree. Get some fertiliser and feed the pruned tree this will combat any dubious pruning. By making the tree healthier will help it defend itself against disease. Use as much as you can of the property resources as possible. Grass cutting or leaf mulch are fantastic for trees. Even wet shredded news paper is better than nothing. You have compaction and the trees are suffering from lack of water. Get rid of large rocks. Try to break up the surface so the water doesn't run off.

Great work! I always had trouble pruning, I didn’t want to take too much off. To transport branches, put a large branch down first with heavy end pointing in direction you want to go. Then pile remaining branch’s on top with the ends the same way. Tie them with a rope to keep together, and they are more easily dragged by holding the bottom branch end.

Main thing with any restorative pruning is to remove all dead, diseased wood first, then open up the trees /bushes to light, remove crossing branches etc. try to re/create the form and structure of each tree/bush (usually think of a wine glass sort of shape). You will get a reduced crop the following season or two, but the plants will come back healthier over the next few years.

Wow, Harriet, amazing amount of work you’ve done! For the dead hedge, if you take some stout branches and pound them vertically on either side of your row of dead branches, every so often, it keeps them more tightly contained. You can add more branches on top as the older ones decay.

No leave the olive branch Let it grow full inside and out Olives tend to give olives every second year. Sometimes weather plays a role too. Go easy on trimming trees. My dad used to do the trees in late Feb, and he preferred getting an expert to do them . Olive trees are very rarely trimmed, and usually in sept after or during harvest. Do not worry about the tree shape or lights, the fuller it is the better it will give.

Hi Harriet - I'm so pleased you are making things safer for Tofu ; going wandering can be so dangerous, especially in places where there are hunters. An accident can happen so quickly. I dont know much about pruning olives but I remember reading one of Annie Hawes' books where she talks about the traditional method and the modern method, in her region of Italy. So basically I dont think you can do much harm. Remember also that many types of fruit trees work on an alternate year cycle for fruiting, to give the tree time to recover . For your end question, green manure is a lot of work, because to be efficient you cut the plants and dig them in ! Maybe try feeding round the trees first with a good layer of mulch / manure/ straw and then think about the green manure a bit later. And a liquid feed would probably be very beneficial, as well as being less work. Comfrey ? Nettle ? Keep on - its coming along so nicely
@LittleSpanishFarmstead
@LittleSpanishFarmstead 2 года назад
Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your comment. You have given me lots of good things to think about! Yes, I think someone else mentioned the two year cycle with olives so that explains a lot! A liquid feed is an interesting idea, I haven't experimented with that at all yet, I need to research and see how to go about it.

The small olive trees thatbibsaw do not need major pruning. Yet they need major clearing of weed at the base, with circular space that is clear from weeds. Leave them until next Sept Oh that branch should have been left on. Let the olive trees grow until next Sept. They need to grow to produce more olives. I say leave them because the branches seem new and still have a lot of room to grow before the need for maintenance.

I like the fence idea you put up all those olive tree branches 👍I have a suggestion for the wild asparagus put the asparagus under the branches it will grow up in that area 👍 that area where the olive trees and almond trees are I would look for a local beekeeper to set up Their bees During flowering seasoning 👍 on your olive trees I would have cut them back last year after you harvest the olive you’re doing it right by cutting all The center out so more sunlight an air can flow through 👍 If you have fig trees right now is the time to take cuttings and put them in the ground for about eight months to the roots and then you can transplant them 👍✌️🤟🤙

Not sure if rooting compound will work on the smaller cutting of olive branches
@ninemoonplanet
@ninemoonplanet 2 года назад
Cutting off the tips for new growth will stall the length of the branches and could increase fruiting. It does work with regular trees like figs, pears, and others. Olives are harvested in winter, so the cuttings should be started in Feb if the natural seasons are there.

If you can find a variety of willow, the trees can produce a rooting hormone. Cur branches, boil/simmer for an hour, let sit overnight. 20-1 ratio for rooting up semi-hard plants..

Hello and congratulations on the channel. I live slightly north of you and have a few olive groves, I'll try to resume a bit... We burn olive prunings because they attract a boring (barrenador/corc) insect which can then infest the trees, you can see the boreholes on the dead branches shortly after pruning, any keeping firewood I store as far away from the trees as I can and already chopped up. On olive pruning, I prune half the trees one year and half the next so as to have a more or less constant yield, the shape of the trees depends on... Do you need to drive a tractor under them, are any branches a nuisance, are you picking by hand, with combs or machine, do you want to use a ladder.. 20 years ago the pruning was done to grow trees 4/5 m tall and were picked with ladders and hand scrapers, nowadays I don't think I have any more than 3 m tall and pick with pneumatic or battery powered combs. Hope to have been of some help, although a bit long.
@LittleSpanishFarmstead
@LittleSpanishFarmstead 2 года назад
Hi Michael, that is all super useful, thank you so much! I didn't know about the boring beetle, or about how they had the trees taller in the past. That's super interesting. We'll be harvesting with combs/rakes so I'm thinking that encouraging the lower hanging branches is easier for that!

Lots of work done again! Seeing you prune the olive trees, I remembered that you can clone/propagate them from cuttings. You could keep them for yourself or sell them, around here they are quite expensive! The green manure seeds, I would spread in a moist area. Dry ground won't germinate the seeds.

@adammac4381

Almond /olive terrace green manure:- if you have neat pretty mulchlike wood chip spread it, and cast the seeds into the top layer of mulch and rake lightly. Otherwise you could "rough mulch" with the tree prunings and cast the seed, reason being you wont be doing anything there for a few years as you say, and rough mulching takes a lot longer to break down and will simply help by shading the earth. Tge important thing is to get the seeds in this spring,,,, you could lay the branches there, let the leaves dry, jump on them for a bit, take the branches away and dry leaves stay behind leaving a good mulch to plant into,,,,,

First, congratulations on your work rate! Lots of good advice here on pruning, but if you are in doubt about removing a branch, sleep on it before the chop - can't glue it back on after😒. Absolutely agree with Michelle re green manure question - works well if you dig it in (you can use "chop and drop" but I think your climate is not ideal for that). I would be inclined to get a couple of comfrey plants, use the leaves to make liquid manure (nettle not, in my view, quite as good but you may have loads of it😊). Give the almond? trees at least one more season before offing them - prune a couple fairly hard to see if there is a good growth rsponse, then do the rest next year if ok, else think about replacing them then.

You may wish to consider weaving some of the olive cuttings into a panel for fencing, maybe use a carrier for the seeds like chopped straw, which will mulch down and also start the process of building the soil

Mmmm chopped straw, yes, do you think with straw and seeds it will work? What if the ground is super dry? I guess I should sow after rain to give them the best chance?

@@LittleSpanishFarmstead before the rain preferably as you can get nature to help also borrow a donkey, to help trample it in and fertiliser

Your videos are getting better so fast! Congrats! I was thinking of putting green manure on my place as well. I'll be just putting it out after a rainy day and will be covering it with some mulch (leaves and dead branches). You can also mix the seeds with some soil to help them getting started.

Hi Scarlet, that's very kind of you! Yes, good point about the rainy day, I hope the rain we get will be enough for them, otherwise I'll have to irrigate somehow. Good idea about mixing with soil too. Might be useful on the areas that are suuuuper stony.
