The most inexpensive and practical food to eat while living in Thailand would be the street food. The food sold off carts parked at certain times on the streets or sidewalks. The most common Thai dishes can be found being sold this way. Costs average around 30--35 Baht per dish that comes served over rice. This food is the real fast food as it is cooked and served faster than the traditional Western fast food and much tastier and nutritious as well. Check out what food is available in just one area of town in Chiang Mai.

I go to Thailand often, and something I notice is how many westerners, especially Americans, assume that the vegetables and fruits are organically grown. That's not at all the case, even the rice is grown with strong chemicals added. In fact, they must wear boots in the rice fields because I'm told the fertilizer used to grow rice will make your toenails fall out if you stand in it too long. They use fertilizer and pesticides, just like most agricultural operations around the world. Still wonderful food. I stay at least a month when I go, eat like a king every day, and still lose 12-15 pounds by the time I get home.

That's really true in the video. I have lived in Thailand two and a half year now, and use to eat street food almost every day; food poisoning is simply a thing that doesn't happen here. The only thing I check first is that the food doesn't contain any bones, skin or intestines; it doesn't make you sick, but as a Westener I doesn't like it.

I think it's important (speaking from my own experience) that you order your meal as soon as the carts are setup and running. Chances are that if you eat late at night, the bacteria have had the opportunity to multiply just enough to make you sick. Thais become seldom sick because their bodies are used to the most common bacteria which resides in food.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+woodyamsterdam Takes a lot longer than that for bacteria to produce. Trust me I know from being a certified food manager

+retirecheapjc Fair enough. I guess that in my case it was just bad luck then. (happened only once)
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+woodyamsterdam Pre-cooked food is what I was referring to in my first comment. Keep in mind also that the vendors keep the fresh meats and seafood on ice in coolers until it gets cooked.

Outstanding. I was in Chiangmai several years ago and ate at the rotee.cart. They have upgraded their signs. I appreciate the inclusion of the vegetarian food in your video. I agree, eating on the street is the ultimate experience. Thanks for the insights into food safety.

My wife is thai, when we are in thailand she has one rule, never buy food unless the vendor has facilities to wash their hands. If they have water to wash hands she always buys from these. Thai street food is fantastic and you can get a good bagful for 100 baht.
@earlymann1954
@earlymann1954 10 лет назад
They might get it fresh at 3am, but it doesn't take long for bacteria to multiply, basically bacteria doubles every 30 minutes when left out in that heat and humidity. I can't tell you how many times farangs end up in Bumrungrad hospital with food poisoning. I used to live there 20 plus years ago and unless you have the stomach of a goat, or you were raised there, you are taking a big risk. True that it happens even in normal restaurants as well there. One has to be careful and know your own stomach! I don't risk it because I don't have a goat stomach. (grin)....My wife is Thai and can eat anything though.... I'm jealous...

Good work fella. I've been living here 7 years now, I live in Samui but my wife is from Chiang Rai (near where you are). This shows the beauty of street food here in Thailand. I too have never been sick from eating from a street stall. The best rule of thumb is if you see locals eating there, it's good to go.

We just love Thai street food rather than eating in Lebua Tower or on fancy restaurants, but eating at Lebua tower was a nice experience though. Seeing a panoramic view of beautiful Bangkok from high above but the most great experience was eating bbq´s and noodles soup on the street.

Great topic JC and one that is very important...we all got to eat ha ha! In my home town these kind of carts are prevailant and quite popular. We have all kinds of Asian carts including Thia, and I have been eating off these for reasons of budget and quality tasting food. I have never gotten sick, the food is good and vendors are friendly. I'll bet the food in these videos is even better. I also noticed vendors list food in both English and Thai...bless their hearts! I love Thia Ice Tea!

Hi, this is the first video of yours I've watched & I really enjoyed it. Thanks! I admire the fact that you're mastering the language & that you're learning about the place- I'm very impressed. I've found that alot of expats don't bother to learn anything about the country, the people, customs etc...& just hang out with other non-locals in westernised/expat run establishments which, I wouldn't describe as 'living' in another country. Cheers!

Yes but I think he is the guy that can't eat the fruit Durian. Great and tasty stuff!! BTW the clams get stuck closed AFTER they have opened sometimes because of the viscosity of the sauce. But yes if you pry them open and there is no sauce inside it might be a good idea to pass on those.

the fact is that these street vendors would never want someone to come back sick after eating from their stall, it's all reputation, if they didn't serve good food, they'd be run out of business by their competition. this is what true capitalism is, you work hard and do a good job and you thrive.

Yes the street food is amazing. They just made an announcement that in Bangkok they will take all the street food vendors off the roads. If they do that that would be a big step in the wrong direction for tourism where that in Bangkok street food was voted number one in the world.

I ate street food every day for three years. I only got sick once from a street vendor, it was on Sukhumvit soi 4. I remember eating some chicken that wasn't thoroughly cooked (in hindsight). So, I think that's pretty good considering the low price, freshly cooked, and convenience of someone else cooking for me. I highly recommend it.

Perfect reply,I've only lived in Thai for 6yrs to many expats that's not long enough to be entitled to an opinion BUT I haven't even had a loose backside in 3 1/2 yrs .Lots of chillies,lots of garlic will take care of any bad choices of which restaurant to eat at. Only one tip I can offer,never enter a Thai food shop that doesn't have a big Thai clientele they know exactly what's going on,up to you to catch on.

Did anyone else notice that when this guy says “I have never gotten sick from one of these carts” he sound a bit like Bill Clinton when he said “ I have never had sexual relations with that women”. Funny! He does make a good point however when he talks about chain restaurants possible being more dangerous than the street carts. In fact, I spent over a year in Thailand all told but despite constantly eating street food I only got food poising once. And I had only eaten in places like Burger King and other very clean and modern chain restaurants in the 48-hour period prior to getting sick, which means I did not get sick on food from a street vendor. So despite how horribly sick I got I still eat street food. Besides, the best Thai food is always at the dirty hole-in-the-wall places.

Depends on the Thai visa you acquire. Some 60 days, some 90 days and some 1 year. Also there are single entry and multiple entry visas. As you can see it is way to complicated to explain on RU-vid so this kind of information and videos are in the member site. A Retirement Extension though is good for 1 year. I hope maybe that answered the question though.
