my uncle caught a snapper in eastern massachusetts... my grandmother cooked up it... i was around 5 years old at that time... my uncle and i were the only 2 brave enough to eat the soup...
Great video. Country Boy Can Survive. A little more of the cost of this modern advancement and convenience and I might have to hike across the woods to your house for supper.
Yeah you should of put it through a pressure cooker, then the crock. I would of taken it out of the shell before butchering it up. Saw a guy use an air hose to lift the skin off the meat of a gator to make skinning it easier. Thanks for the vid... Watch for those beheaded turtles lil paw!
Just a note: As scary as this seems, decapitating a turtle doesn't kill it instantly and the brain can remain active for quite some time because reptiles have slower metabolisms than mammals. When you kill it, you should destroy the brain first.
Good video. Catfish skinning pliers helps a lot. Have yourself a one of those diamond sharpening rods, because when you cut through that shell your knife is going to be dull immediately and when you work around all of those bones. Also besides the neck muscles, I try to remove all the meat that I can from the leg bones, I think that it improves the flavor quality. Lastly I think soaking the meat in a vinegar/oil brine with your favorite seasonings for several days is going to help tenderize the meat.
Hey Lil Paw--- i sure do love and miss a big pot of Snappin Turtle Stew... been a long time since i caught a nice one. :) You gotta Salt and Pepper and fry that meat in oil till its nice and brown then put it in the crock pot.
Sixty penny nail through the top of the shell and walah, skinned many of our years ago in southern I'll out of slews, skin one out in twenty mins each, raised on em GREAT MEAT TO EAT
Campbells use to sell a turtle soup right next to the chicken noodle soup. I ate alot of turtle soup when I was young . We had to thin turtles out of our small spring fed lake about 6 years ago they were eating all our crappie . After you clean a few you will get faster. I really don't know why but I was taught to always soak meat in salt water overnight. Love your videos. Once again you need a presure cooker to do just the meat in. It will be very tender .You can get an electric pressure cooker and they are so easy to use . Cook the meat about 45 min then add your veggies and cook another 15 minutes
Just found you today. Tell Lil Paw hey. Reminds me of my grandfather. He turned 96 this year and still takes care big garden. We are up here close to Cullman, Al
Just a heads up on the possum the one I tried some of was about 75% fat and 25% meat and was also fed out for a week on corn but it wasn't good at all lol.
Haha I've heard that before. We're going to feed one out but also boil it in 3 different pots of water to get rid of the greasyness of it (so I've heard) and see how that works!
@@AdventureswithPastorD I know my grandpa roasted a big fat one on a turkey roaster put barbecue sauce on it and it looked like a skelton with dark stringy meat hanging off it sitting in a pan full of grease . I had to sit at the table until bedtime cause I wouldn't eat it. Lol the only times I had to sit at table was when we had possum, it also smelled up the house .I have had possum fat gravy and biscuits but it didnt taste bad cause my grandma put tons of black pepper on it.
Honestly I never cleaned a turtle haven't ate one since I was a kid I miss you grandma but you had better tools and she went through the cleaning process maybe she better but they didn't look like much maybe technique I don't know i can barely skin a rabbit love video like this I'm trying to go back to the wild myself just never did it I grew up in miami when video games was starting off 😫😫 but big momma let me witness some thing's before the good lord called her
I understand how that is, we will be reunited one day as long as we follow Jesus. My granny waiting on me too. But yeah they say soft shell turtles are easier to skin, that's what I'll be trying next when I catch one. Like you said though, I think we all need to get back involved with the old ways. That's the inspiration of my videos. Thanks for watching and for your feedback!
Whats up Lil Paul. Are you ready for some turtle meat. Grandpa used to make turtle soup. He always took the shell and made like a mask like the old Indians used to so.
Scald the turtle on boiling water for a minute or so right after you chop his head off bud. It helps loosen the skin and kills parasites. are y'all anywhere near Hamilton Alabama?
Awesome video man, just watched the water moccasin cook and clean video….When I caught and cleaned my first snapping turtle my grandfather said to pour boiling water on it to help separate the shail surprisingly it worked pretty good, only thing back then I didn’t know to put to turtle in a cooler, ir something full of water and feed it whatever to help clean the insides out!! Man it stunk but we ate what We could…. I learned from experience Lol…. I absolutely love turtle stew… I only catch turtles in creeks, and rivers now, there way cleaner and taiste 10x better than a turtle caught out of a farm pond…
Holding it like it's an Alligator snapper. That thing can easily bite you with it's long ass neck. Did you chill it down? Sure moving sluggish at the beginning.
@@AdventureswithPastorD yeah, after a bit they get tired from tryin to bite backwards. I got one as a pet, the bugger got me the first day. Thank God he was only 5 inch shell length. Took the very tip a mah index figer off man. Now he's over 8 inch and onery as heck!. Also got a big ole Alligator Snapper....she could really snap fingers off lol! Awesome videos man. 👍🙂.
