Fouad - Nick are you there, you look paralysed 😂😂 I don’t buy it, too many factors go into building muscle for me. For a study like this to be accurate everyone would need to be on a set diet, training program, same cycle, same rest and sleep times and external stress factors. I think there’s too many fundamentals of building muscle to isolate which is nearly impossible and the elephant in the room is all the studies are done on joe average natural athletes. Interesting tho 🤘🏻

Please do not hate me for my comment. Fouad did not exactly rephrase Brad´s Schoenfeld´s Studies, which might have caused confusion. Brad never wrote anything about 100 reps in a set. 35 reps at max. Limiting factor would be lactic acid. His studies however in my opinion have debunked the myth that there are "optimal" rep ranges, which is in fact individual, even different from bodypart to bodypart. Recommending someone to always have 8-12 reps for all bodyparts is in fact questionable. Trying different intervalls (6 reps, 10 reps and 20 reps) in a set and observing the results might be the way to go. @Jamie you are right. But Brad has always pointed out the same thing 😉. As a fan of JP I really love to see that there are also different rep ranges between the working set and the backoff set in the programs I know from JP. So fundamentally these studies are practically implemented already, even if there was a different intention before. Love both your contents. Greets from Germany ✌
@JamieChristianTheGiant
@JamieChristianTheGiant 3 года назад
@@MP-mz7un ah appreciate that man, I thought the same tbh that we were already putting this into practice in the sense we fail at different rep ranges, I agree fully that failure is failure but weight must be enough to stimulate the mechanical tension part enough for the muscle to fail before the lactic acid get's you like you touch on there :)

After running a gym for the last 5 yrs, it's my opinion that no one system is better than the other. The 2 most jacked members I have train completely different. One is in there for 3 to 4 hours as he is a day trader and it's his social time...its his Cheers. He rarely lifts heavy and does a shit ton of volume. The other is a hard working, union plumber who is in and out in 45 or less every time, training with low volume to failure. To make things more contradictory, the dude training to failure with heavy ass weight is the one with the round, round muscle and flowing physique while the dude doing all the pump work has the rugged, Branch Warren type build. Genetics trump all I guess.

Relating to training light vs heavy - Me at 50 years old and doing lighter weight for more reps to failure, have gained more muscle than heavier weight/low reps. I don't have near the base muscle of a bodybuilder (I'm 6 ft/205 lbs/10% bf), so a bodybuilder may respond differently. But I'm enjoying the ride of slow and steady gains without any injuries. Actually George Leeman made a point in high rep sets till failure . Actually high reps you have a better chance of actually going till failure for instance If you bench 25 reps and your failure is 26 reps that’s a 96% going right till failure If you bench 6 reps and failure is 7 that’s only 85% failure . 1 rep shy of failure of a higher rep scene is going to equate to an overall higher% of failure . Its like this is rating someone out of 100 more accurate then rating someone out of 10 .If that makes sense

Would you suggest I stop being this way to improve my physique and journey or is it ok to be a bit of a nut job and just go to war every time you train? It's always controlled movements but just before my set I'm thinking about the craziest stuff I actually shed tears sometimes before my heavy top sets but it's like anger. regarding the first question. no not the same type of hypertrophy. the science of that question is pretty simple. there is a difference between exhausting the muscle from its energy stores and overloading the muscle to failure. when doing heavy weight you are utilizing more muscle fibers. if you do 50lbs shoulder press you aren't using all of your recourses. (muscle) because it's not needed. when you do 100lbs dumbbells you have more activation.
@DANIELGARCIA-qe5oz
@DANIELGARCIA-qe5oz 3 года назад
Doing both (higher reps/lower reps) activates more muscle fibers because you’re activating the 2 types (fast twitch and slow twitch). That’s what Dr Schoenfeld was referring to. You do more activation by mixing it up. Higher reps doesn’t mean you have to hit 100 reps but the work is getting done in similar fashion (higher/lower reps) as you get closer to muscle failure. 15/20 reps is probably more than enough to activate the slow twitch muscle fibers.

I think the main conclusion from Brads studies is that the debate on if you build more muscle doing 6 reps or 15 reps doesn’t matter. It’s obviously not practical to do 30 rep sets your entire career, and no one will likely take that approach. & determining rep ranges On movements should come down to if you can PROFICIENTLY train to failure without reaching cardiovascular fatigue first, judging when you’re actually in proximity to failure, and the safety of the movement

Amazing podcast as always! Just you guys arguing so much about training for high reps or heavy and low reps. If you will do 30reps with lighter weight and bounce on your knees that will hurt your joins the same as heavy.. it's not the reps most important but the mechanical tention on muscle try to do lighter weight but for 3-4 seconds down 1 sec pause 1 sec concentric and do as many reps as possible if you can extent your set from usual 30-40sec to 60s and over that will definitely make more muscle damage even with lighter weight. I can’t agree with lighter weight for more reps causes just as much muscle to be built tbh. I’ve tried it myself with time under tension training for nearly 2 years, then when I switched to heavier all out working sets gains have been so much greater! Also, Fouad you kind of contradicted yourself as you said you don’t need to get any bigger so you’re trying this style of training, which basically says it won’t build any more tissue? I totally agree with you that it will be a ‘safer’ or ‘healthier’ option for joint preservation as you’re getting older but not for gaining...& that’s my 2 cents!lol

QUESTION: Regarding Training Hard vs. Light convo: Maybe I'm thinking of basic Grade 11 Biology class., BUT wouldn't your muscle failure be influence by two different things? HEAVY: Failure influenced by the load on your nervous system, and more adaption would be improved bone density, improved muscle fiber recruitment, potential HGH product (if Natural). LIGHT: Failure influenced by building up metabolic waste and muscle cells not being able to keep up with energy (ATP)production, running out of oxygen, building lactic acid. The adaption would be more increase anaerobic capacity, your cells would upregulate to produce more mitocondria, more ATP enzymes, etc.

I'm commenting waaaay late on this but it's true doing higher reps, lighter weight to failure. I'm 5'7 280lbs 12%bf. I'm not competing now and I do it. Example, I've done side laterals with 60's for 8-10 reps 3-4 sets. Now I do 25's for 30 reps 3-4 sets. I'm seeing more results and I almost cannot lift my arms. Failure is failure and it varies person to person. I'm also an Army Abn Rngr Combat Vet and I was a Drill Sergeant. Doing PT pushing your body to failure is failure. It's a mind set that you must overcome. When competing and you've lifted heavy for so long you cannot grasp something that's sounds that ridiculous. BTW, there are pros that have always lifted lighter. My Wifey loves the show. We actually talk about everything you talk about and Wifey loves anal! Train Hard Win Easy 💪 Michael "Haus" Fitzgerald
