1914 -1918 Denmark. The Government told its population to "eat what the animals ate" and to stop eating animal products, as part of the war effort to avoid starvation. When the "Spanish " European bird flu arrived in Denmark in 1918, hardly anyone died compared to the rest of Europe. They were not starving and they had strong immune systems. Ref Dr John MacDougal.
This is the most informative, transformative and inspiring podcast. As a Pharmacist (vegan🥰), I am learning so much more here🙌 Thank you Chuck and Dr Barnard, you are gifts to humanity🥰

Thank you both for your invaluable contributions! Dr. Barnard you are a one of a kind man who deserves to be the surgeon general for America. Your contributions to good health have helped so many and continue to do so. Thank you for all your truth telling and dispelling the myths that cloud the consciousness of so many people who are fooled by the Meat and Dairy industry lies.
Hi I am on the 4th day of my 21 Day Vegan kickstart and I' ve lost 1 kg that means a lot to me without any efforts and end of my frustrations after doing this doing that to lose weight for three years which always came back more. Hoping to say goodbye to my menopausal weight gain :(26 kg, muscle and joint pains, anxiety, prediabet, thank you so much I am so grateful!
@@nylakhan5658 Watch Chef AJ and her guests. That will give you ideas what to eat, and how to loose weight. I love dr. Mc Dougall. He is the potatoe doctor. Eat your white potatoes without any fatty additives and loose a lot of weight. I lost 16lbs. Good luck.
@@nylakhan5658 I am sorry to hear that. You can still watch the videos to find some ideas. I know that loosing the weight made me feel better mentally. Sometimes finding a goal and distraction from reality is a good too. I hope you feel better with whatever solution you find. Best wishes.
I have lost weight going on a vegetarian diet. My A1c has improved from 6.3 to 5.8 my cholesterol has gone down.Your podcast has helped me tremendously.
Wow! This is great video. thank you for this information. Although I rarely eat cheese, now I know I should avoid it and stop taking my multivitamins that contain iron. Thanks again and God bless for sharing this info.
I'm convinced that the big investors and analysts are trying to scare us to keep us poor and ignorant to the market.. because its steady doing good after all the jobless and market crash talks
Thank you for focusing questions on menopause. Very helpful! Re: the person that asked about menopause and are grains ok for us? YES! I am 69 and eat a mix of brown rice/quinoa often! Daily in fact. No added fat! And my BMI is 20. 5'7" 133 lbs. Grains are great for the morning constitutional!! :-) I don't, however, eat processed grains like bread. I eat whole, plump, water-filled grains.
As he mentioned, bread and all other flour products are fine, if made from fresh milled whole grain flour and in proportion with the other categories of whole food. Not .essential, but the important distinction is with refined grain flour, which should be avoided.
LOVE you Dr. Barnard, pointing out that exploitation of animals is the reason we and the earth are so sick. Love this topic of healthy aging as I celebrate B-Day 50 ++.
Thank you! There are two multis I know of designed for WFPB diets: Dr Fuhrman has one, and another is called Complement. They are designed to fill in some of the gaps or hard-to-get nutrients but not the nutrients we normally would have plenty of with plant based diet. There may be others, but those are two high quality ones I know of. Hope this helps someone!
Hallo Chuck, I am following your podcast, I have been vegetarian for more than 40 Years, now with my 80 Years and have decided to become vegan and follow the recommendations from dr Barnhard to lower my LDL cholesterol, but I did not hear any information about Magnesium, that I am taking on daily basis, can put that as topic on your next show, thank you ver much and many greeting from Germany
My respect to Dr. Barnard. Been following his advice and living it for many years. Mid sixties, take no medicines, no health problems, knock wood. Wish I could convince more friends and family to simplify and improve their lives by eating healthy....
Just be an example to these other people, of what can be done if you eat correctly. You may go through life alone, but you’re actually being more of a savior by not bothering the people just showing them. You’re a great example. They’ll see you and say wow, they really must be doing something there.
Grelat Q&A - I really enjoid your conversation and even if I know most of it already it motivated me even more to continue my change toward becoming 100% low fat whole plant based. 🙏🍀💚🐸
Chuck, I'm impressed by and appreciative of your articulate speech. It's so much easier to listen to someone who speaks so well, without all the ums and uhs and repititions and backtracks that typify the speech of most people. Thanks.
I've been eating a WFPB diet for 6 years now and have reversed my heart disease and improved my vision. Well, improved everything for that matter...my brain fog is gone, I have more (much more) energy. Morning joint stiffness is gone. It's been like a fountain of youth.
@@vivianechukwuka5510 I eliminated all processed food, eating only whole grains and colorful fruit and vegetables. Every day I eat a 2 cup serving of 'overnight oats' with lots of berries. The more colorful the food, the healthier it is. Except for nuts and seeds, I eliminated fat of all kinds. I hope this helps.
As a parrot owner I am still EXTREMELY WARY of NONSTICK PANS. Sellers are often very good at shrouding the actual chemical composition of the nonstick surfaces, and some are potentially more dangerous than others. I don't want my companion bird to die, and I don't want to breathe in anything that is potentially toxic to him either. There are good ceramic nonstick that do not run the risk of releasing toxic (odorless) fumes. That is what I use.
@@maryannsinopoli1751 I would advise anyone with a parrot simply not to make use of ANY cookware that is identified as “non-stick”. It is impossible to safely rely on manufacturer’s claims regarding the exact chemical composition of these coatings. In addition, the scientific literature I’ve seen has only broadly stated the potentially lethal effect the colorless, odorless fumes from “non-stick” cookware can have on a parrot. I have yet to encounter detailed information. I do know a highly experienced breeder who might be able to provide me with more info. In the meantime, I would play it safe.

In the UK there is a sudden emergence of plant based junk food. So being plant based is no longer automatically healthy. In supermarkets in the UK it is easy to find vegan bacon, crisps, burgers, French fries, chocolates, cakes, pastries, cheeses, desserts, hams, pies, sausage rolls, ready meals, chocolate bars, sweets, drinks, milkshakes, ice-creams, pizzas.... everything!
True, in the USA as well. It's convenient to tell someone I'm vegan, when they ask me, because people immediately associate vegan=plant based=no animal products. If I tell them I'm wfpb I'll have to spend 10 minutes explaining what I eat. But I think the problem is for new vegans. Old timers, like me, know that all that plant based processed food is not much healthier than meat... Actually I think it's worse.
As popular vegan foods, like soy beans, almonds, spinach are very high in oxalate, so whether being a vegan will be at a higher risk to intake too much oxalate leading to health problems, such as kidney stones.
I am over 80, go for long walks ( up to 10 km) , but l have a poor appetite, and need to take iron and calcium supplements. I take the necessary vitamines, as well. I do this to supplement my scarce food intake. If l try to eat more, l almost throw up. I only sleep 3 or 4 hours per night, and just lay there not able to sleep, especially after a long walk. It doesn't make sence. Any thoughts, or advice out there?
Hello, I am a 53-year-old woman living with M.S. since I was 21 years old. I try to follow a vegan diet as best I can and have no limitations! My only problem is that I have M.S. fatigue and wonder if you can help in any way?
Julie, You should listen to Dr. Terry Wahls who put her own MS into remission some years ago by dietary changes. Also listen to Dr. John Mc Dougall on this subject. Both say that for those with MS, fat - and saturated fat in particular- is a major problem. Dairy foods would be a big problem but other foods also. Theyre worth a listen. If we can eat our way to bad health, we surely must be able to eat for improved health. More and more people are successfully doing so. I hope you can too. Good luck and blessings for the journey.
I would like to hear Dr. Barnard speak to Dr. Weil's points about avoiding breads, including whole wheat breads, because finely ground flours are digested and broken down to glucose too quickly.
Dr. our soils are not as they were of old. Are the foods containing the vitamins, minerals and nutrients if they are not growing in certain types of soil?
Dr. Barnard I don't know you I heard you before in another podcast and had to stop it because I disagree with your information so today I'm listening at minute 35 when you said that grains are good eat your grains stop the butter. Well I'm 62 now I ate grains all my life no butter small portions of chicken and beef, etc. and I have to give thanks to grains for mi diabetes my obesity, flatulence, acid reflux, and a long list of ailments. So 20 years ago after the "carbohydrates addict diet" book I stop eating bread and potatoes, years later I stopped eating rice and beans and now I just don't eat grains, starches, sugars, I eat a lot of butter, beef, chicken, green leaves vegetables lots of cheese and all my problems went away. Lots of energy no problems with my arteries I don't look my age. Opinions??

When you are young you can do anything but when you get older you can take this advice: 2014 Science Daily: A diet high in protein, particularly animal protein, may help elderly individuals function at higher levels physically, psychologically, and socially, according to a study. The research suggests that as people age, their ability to absorb or process protein may decline. To compensate for this loss, protein requirements may increase with age.
Protein sources do not have to be from animal sources. Pea protein and rice protein which are available in powders .In food beans and rich for instance will compensate for any animal sources. they do not have to be taken at the same meal just within 24 hours all added together equal quality protein.
We get bad cholesterol from animals and their droppings. Excess protein can get stored as cysts and tumours since body cannot safely store excess protein. Plants provide a much safer source of protein and since Dr. Barnard explains it all very well, I think his advice supersedes a 2014 Science Journal.

Slow FE brand is a non-heme vegan iron supplement if your iron and/or ferritin levels are too low. It’ll absorb a lot better if you take it with something that has vitamin C. Most people have adequate levels of iron, but some people are very low for no apparent reason. I wish the PC would address iron in depth sometime, including things like how you can have normal ferritin but very low serum iron, etc.
It usually has to do with some unknown loss of iron. Most commonly, it's in a women's monthly period. Not many people know that they have a heavy period such that they need medical intervention, and they just assume a heavy period is expected. Iron supplements usually help boost ferritin, and iron stores for regular iron-deficient people are addressed. If you still have problems. It's likely to be an issue with chronic loss of iron. Red blood cells take a while to mature and replenish the system.
@@marley7659 Thanks for the feedback. I don't get my period anymore and I've been checked every way my doctor can think of for blood loss and there simply is none. My ferritin level is in the low normal range but my serum iron is always low without supplementation. My ferritin never gets beyond low normal. I've had this problem for a lot of years, even many years ago when I was still eating a bit of meat. I only know one other person who has the same problem except she's worse - she can't keep her iron levels up even with supplementation at times and has to have IV iron. I just wish someone could tell me what's happening. My doctor can't figure it out but she thinks it's a problem. But I appreciate you responding.
@@soilikasanen I do have symptoms if I don’t supplement. Very tired, off balance when walking, shortness of breath. All other tests show normal or low normal levels. Thanks for the input.
I heard the good Dr repeatedly mention that saturated fat interferes with omega-3 bioavailability. What is the proposed or known mechanism? Are there any citations? Like many people, I'm aware that omega-6 fatty acids compete for the same elongation enzymes as those needed to elongate omega-3 short polyunsaturated chain fatty acids to EPA and DHA, but this relationship between saturated fat and polyunsaturated fatty acids is a new one to me at least.
Dear Chuck, thank you so much for the extremely informative conversations. I have a question. Is it safe to take vitamin D 50,000 units once a week? I am prescribed 13 D_Forte 50000 U ( Ergocalciferol) once a week.
Years ago, I was severely deficient in vitamin D. I think I was 13. I was put on 50K a week, can't remember how long I did that. Then went to 10k a day. I was tested and think I was 38, now I'm on 5k a day. I'm a senior citizen and I really don't go out in the sun. I know the suggest amount is 2K, but don't think for me that's enough.
I was prescribed the same amount but it was D2. I chose to take D3 instead along with K2. Mine was 5000 IU daily and my D is now in the normal range. I took the Solgar brand
I've also been taking 5,000 IU's with K2 per day for almost 18 months. It reversed my low levels from 31 to 65, and holding there. I'm post menopause and not in the sun enough, so this is working well for me. 🙂
I am 82, and am deficient in iron, so am takin an iron pill along with vitamin c first thing in the morning, then after about 20 to 30 minutes, l have my breakfast. Is this the correct way to absorb iron?
It depends If you're in catabolic (inflammatory) state or anabolic (in balanced) state. So, with anti-inflammatory diet and handling stress with healthy ways you get a benefit for bones.
Like my grandmothers (both healthy on very simple food until over 90 ... secret? They never saw a doctor) - I eat in intervalls eggshells for calcium (proofed of perfect absorbation of the body) put my champignons 30 min. into sunshine (and myself at least that every day) for vit D. etc. - old people wisdom
The important thing is that you keep in mind that in a wfpb there are two vitamins that you can't get from plants: B12 and k2. They were all surprised in finding out in a recent study that vegans suffer more bone fractures... But no one mentioned that k2 (vitamin which manages the use of calcium in the body) is present only in animal fatty acids or (in small quantity) in natto. So you'd better supplement it.
I’m confused around DHA and EPA. Do we need to take a supplement for this? I hear deficiencies in DHA as we get older can bring on Alzheimers? How do we make sure we eat the right foods to get this?
Dr Tim Radak has awesome lectures about EPA/DHA. According to Dr Joel Fuhrmann e fifth of ppl are poor transfers ALA to DHA. I myself take 250-300 mg algae supplement and blood work of fatty acids was fine.
@@soilikasanen I've never managed to test my fatty acids levels. I tried with a couple of doctors, but the lab came back blank (I guess they didn't know how to do it). I eat a couple of tsp of flax seeds every morning and I use dulse everyday for iodine intake. One day I'll have to figure out who can test my fatty acids (online tests cost a ton of money) levels.
@@gigipizzuto4068 I got my FA's checked for free by a company which would have liked to have me on board to market their products. When test results came with interpretation that I should eat more saturated (!) fat, I knew I do well : ) Although I take 250mg of DHA and EPA almost daily, I eat 1 tbs of both hemp and chia (sometimes flax) seeds and at least 2 tbs of walnuts daily. All great sources of ALA.
You don't have to count macros on WFPBD. Hovewer, as vegetarian, did you know that 59% of calories of skimmed milk comes from sugar? And there's no fiber at all in any animal products. Watch documentary Milked.
I cook on my non stick pan for years. Also years ago I have learned how to cook anything and everything on water. I was planning to buy a cast iron pan, because I thought that I should, but now I know that I don't need it. Thank you Doctor. Pleasw, get your colonoscopy when recommended. The colon cancer is the most preventable cancer. The doc will remove your polyps during the colonoscopy and that just prevented your colon cancer. The polyps need abt 7 years to transform into cancer. Have best health everyone.
Calcium must be taken with Magnesium in the ratio 2:1. And D3 helps with absorption. K2 (Mk 7) removes calcium from arteries and retains it in the bones.
There have been some very recent studies showing no benefit from K2 unfortunately. The people who conducted the study haven't given up on K2 though and studies continue.
@@sharkair2839 K2 = natto, cheese, sauerkraut, butter . D3 is vitamin sunshine. Most of the soil is deficient in vitamins/minerals. Unless you eat tons of veggies daily, and even then I doubt that’s possible.
