🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

When I was there about 30 years ago, we went to a Kayenne village in Thailand. It was where they lived and they were not selling things in the village. You did have to pay to go in. Because we were interested in learning about their culture and not just there to take pictures and leave, many sat with us and talked to us. We even played games with the children. At that time, the Thai government was charging them to live there, but would not allow them to work or farm. The entrance fee into the village went to the Thai government to allow them to stay there and to go to the Kayenne people in then Burma to fight the Burmese military who were murdering them (which was way they had fled Burma). They would make crafts and go into town to sell them or allow travellers and tourists to take photos for a fee, to earn a living. It was the only thing the Thai government would allow them to do (and it gave the Thai government money as they were a draw for travellers and tourists) They told us they had to flee Burma (now Myanmar) because the Burmese government was coming in and taking their men to be slaves to be in the military, or they would just kill them. So they fled for their lives. When we asked them about the history of the rings, they said that many years ago, when their enemies would make war, the men were harder to capture, but because the women would be fleeing with children, it was easy to catch the women and kill them, which was done by cutting them at the neck. So the women began to wear the rings to protect themselves. Over time, it became a thing of beauty. And the longer the neck, the more beautiful they were deemed. They began to add rings to their legs and arms, too. Some do remove the rings if they become ill or convert to Christianity. Their necks are not weak. It is quite a process to put on the rings or take them off, as they have to heat them slowly to make them pliable to manipulate them, while not injuring them.

This video is really AMAZING! I'd love to meet them, hear their stories and try their food. I was really drawn into this episode because they are unique and very beautiful people. Well done, BEFRS for telling their story and giving the rest of the world a glance of these wonderful human beings!!! 🖤🖤🖤

It's their culture & lifestyle. Let them enjoy it & prosper. If it helps them to run their life & living, better for them, so be it. Thanks Sonny, for sharing the life & culture of the Karen tribe with the rest of the world.

Totally agree. They also have rights to choose how they want to live. It's not like Thai people and Thai government are against them either, otherwise they won't even be able to work there in the first place. Being able to make enough income to support their children's education as immigrants in a foreign country is already a huge feat.

This was a great video. I appreciate your videos showing how different cultures live. I don’t think you get enough credit for shedding light into places no one looks. I also appreciate that you do it in a fun style but you do offer up a serious side. Thanks for the passion. Keep rocking brother.

Is it me or did this episode have some Anthony Bourdain vibes. I like how Sunny was so blunt and honest. When he said a real life human circus 🎪 I felt that 100% 👍

I may have mentioned this before, but this is really starting to dip into the realms of Bizarre Foods in the best way possible. Yes, it is mainly focused on experiencing a culture through their food, but it also showcases local customs and lifestyle in a respectful and curious way. Serious Andrew Zimmern vibes in the way you guys approach locals with a sense of reverence and your attitude is reflected in the openness and kindness shown by your hosts; not everyone who travels (yes, Americans have a reputation for a reason, sadly) is as kind and their experiences are not as welcoming and wonderful. Thank you for treating everyone like human beings and respecting their cultures rather than a sideshow at a carnival to be mocked because they are different. This would absolutely be my dream job, but I can settle for living vicariously through you and your amazing team.

Sonny. I just had to say man, thanks to you, I have more of an idea of what I’m looking at when I see foreign food. And I’m sure if it happened to me, I can only imagine what you’re doing for our younger generation. Thank you for going out of your way with your team to bring this knowledge to us and our kids. We love you man ❤️‍🔥

Sonny, this was one of the most impressive vids from you. It's so double in feelings. I've studied tourism, and ofcourse also read and learned about the long neck tribes. But to see it in this way is almost saddening me. Such a beautiful culture on the one side, but just a charade in the other. Thank you for showing us this part too. Keep up your good work in making us amazed and smiling.💜

Asia is connected to Africa by the Isthmus of Suez and borders Europe. There was Africa before there was Asia, so many things such as cultures, practices, etc traveled outward from Africa, just like Egypt is in Africa, but many will say this is where Africa got this when they go to Asia, when no its the reverse.

You're the only channel of the few I'm subscribed to, which I actually get on RU-vid excited and hoping that you released another video. This is probably your best one yet that I can remember as of late. It was interesting and informative, more of a short documentary feel. I loved the realness you expressed about their culture, tourism, etc. The thought and sight of thses neckrings makes me so uncomfortable. Frankly, it also makes me quite sad to see that these women didn't get to live a life of their own, but it does bring me great joy to hear some are breaking traditions for the sake of their kids, traditions that I feel needed to be broken.
