I recently acquired a 73 c600 with a Clark 282 and a Eaton 2 speed axle. No one I know is old enough to show me how it's done and this is the best video I've found to explain the operation which helped tremendously.

No, its a 2 speed axle, with a typical 5 or 6 speed transmission. These are typically referred to as 5&2 or 6&2 speed transmissions. You basically get 10 or 12 gears respectively, so to speak.
They may still be an available option, however with the additional gears in the newer transmissions they would be pretty rare. I've driven a "Super 10" which is a little different than a 2 speed axle in that you go through 1-5, then shift the range shifter, then go through 1 through 5 again. IMO more useful than a 2 speed axle as you do not have to split each gear. ( A 5 + 2 you can get 9 speeds out of if you split each shift ).

My truck had this and I never knew what it was its always in the down can I shift up and keep it up, or no. Can I keep it in the up position, and Fergot about it?
Unless you're heavily loaded you can leave it in high range and forget about it, you only really need low range for standing starts when fully loaded or at least 90% of full load.
Organic pranks Yes, you can just leave it in high, however it will be harder on your clutch. I recommend that you start off in low, go through all your gears and then in top gear after winding it out you simply pull on the plunger and up shift to high for fuel economy.
Does Eaton make a 10 speed transmission? I would like to have smaller splits in my Freightliner that has a 6 speed manual transmission. Split shifting a rear axle up and down might be a pain. I would prefer just making an ordinary stick shift without and two speed axle. Would your 10 speed fit behind the Freightliner Cummins engine?
