When they get "shrink wrapped" which is why they couldn't get out, most likely from the humidity going down as you keep opening your incubator.. you could have saved them by helping them out.. also if they get their beek out too far, (as I saw one of the lighter eggs had done that) they will have to be helped. They will not be able to zip out when that happens.. I've done this a lot most of my life, and have saved a lot of chicks that way. BTW, there are some videos here on RU-vid showing you when and how to help a chick hatch.. you just have to be very careful not to help them too early, or they will bleed to death. You should see no liquid blood when the time is right. Hope this helps you.. thank for the video.

The pipping and being unable to hatch after being so close to hatching is a humidity issue.

Sadly all those that pipped didn't have because they got shrink wrapped. Next, time add more water to the incubator during hatching. It was too dry.

If you watch the YT channel A chick named Albert, it seems that the membrane dries out and becomes very hard requiring intervention to help them peck through and out. He paints the shell and membrane with water making it soft again and then very gently helps them to get out. I hope this helps for the next time. It’s sad that 8 chicks were lost. Thank you for your analysis, very helpful to me as a newbie. New sub fir you. 😃

Hope you have identified the problem i have seen your post just now and can share my little experience Number 1 at least you can have 9 more chicken by supporting chicks breaking shell manually instead of waiting for them to break Number 2 between day 5 & 7 always candle test/light test your eggs Number 3 if possible instead of horizontal position of the eggs go vertical position (the natural position) that will increase your hatch rate Number 4 sometimes you just have to spray water or if you can add a donut humidifier that will be helpful Hopefully my suggestions will be beneficial for you

I have a broody hen. She is the best incubator! When she goes broody, I either put fertile eggs or day old chicks under her and with eggs, I typically have about a 80% hatch rate! She is on her third clutch for the year and has so far (this year) raised 14 babies to Point of Lay. This time, she has 4 black and 4 white moran babies to look after, last time it was hylines, time before that it was silkie-hyline crosses. So if you have a Momma hen go broody, take advantage of these instincts, it is the way that God and Nature intended it to be, and by far gives the best results! And when she's re-introduced to the flock, it's not a problem, the whole flock recognizes their Momma!
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm 3 года назад
I agree, god has definitely provided the best way, and I do have broody hens, it’s just with my setup and my free range philosophy I usually loose the baby’s to predators . I do realize there are ways around that. At this point I’m incubating 60 eggs every 3 months and it’s just simpler to control.
@PsychicIsaacs
@PsychicIsaacs 3 года назад
@@ozarkshomesteadandfarm Absolutely, I understand! I have my broody hen in a brooding pen, about 2 square meters, she usually goes broody on a nest in the chicken house and on the first day after either hatching or introducing chicks I put Mamma and her babies into the brooding pen, which is in the middle of the chicken run, but blocked off from viewing the mature hens with sheet metal. I could have them visible and have done this as well, and it was okay, but sheet metal is how we do it now. I have my chickens in rotating "Victory Garden" style chicken runs, with dogs (Jack Russell Crosses) free ranging across the rest of the farm. Because of this, I don't lose chickens to foxes any more, but as much as I would love to, I just can't have them free ranging across the rest of my farm, having caught my dogs stalking them once too often... But I live completely off-grid where I am, I couldn't run an incubator if I wanted to, so broody hens it is for me!

Thats why you do assisted hatches sometimes if some chicks can’t break out then maybe they weren’t able to get into position or the shell was too hard or they could zip the egg because they couldn’t move around much so that’s why you should help them hatch by gently breaking away the shell so they don’t die

If you have vertical egg Hatcher lot of times air sac is damaged on shipping eggs. Get horizontal incubator will be better hatch rate. If air sac is broke when chick is about to hatch the liquid in egg is where air should be so they basically drown in the egg. If the are older then a week. The hatch rate drops by 20% each week you wait

Those water trays seem like they have an absolutely huge surface area - We use a Brinsea maxi 2 advance, and you fill up one half of the circular water tray for the first 18 days, and then both halves after day 18. The water dish is roughly 10cm across in diameter, so I have no idea why your incubator has such a huge surface area to maintain humidity

Take all I say with a grain of salt though I’ve had several low hatch rates my last one was about 60% had two underdeveloped that hatched, but still had a good portion of yolk sac attached and a few that just stopped developing I later found that the center of my incubator (the only portion without a tstat or humidity read out was running colder. Dude if you want the best that I’ve every had in incubator is the Farm innovators pro from tractor supply. It doesn’t show it in the picture but it has a hole on each side front and back for putting water in . This way you don’t have to open it to ad water . Last year when i set mine three different hatches I added the water just like they all say do . Well I would always have chicks not to make it . So I did what they call the dry hatch on my first set of eggs a few weeks back . I set my incubator up place the eggs in the turner and the temp was at 99.5 in o time . This incubator has also got the humidity reading on it . I never open it tell seven days and I would crack it open enough to take two eggs out test them with my light and put them back I did all 40 . Had two not fertile and I dropped one . That left me with 37 on day fourteen I did the same all good . So I was to take the turner out on day 18 but I didn’t . I did add the first water I had put in it on day 18 . My humidity staid around 34% the hole time with No Water Added until I added some water no much either . It brought it up to 80% on day 20 I had 12 hatched . So at that time I took those twelve out and the tuner and on day 21 I had hatched all but one and it hatched on day 22 . I think what makes this incubator stand out from the rest is the hard plastic on the out side of the styrofoam. I didn’t get this kinda hatch with the 600.00 one I had years ago . Plus I put my eggs in another tuner as I collect them so they are being turned in my room while I’m waiting to get my trays full . I have the second batch in the incubator now and no water my humidity is staying the same . That could be to all the rain we have had and still getting I don’t know but even so I wouldn’t let my humidity go over 34% no lower than 15% . And keep the lid shut as much as Possible . And I was reading about how you had some with the points up you can candle the egg and tell where the air sack is if the shells are not to dark .

Well that sucks. I have never had that experience but I have only purchased four times from eBay. eBay eggs definitely have challenges you need to make sure the seller is reputable then they have to survive shipping it’s definitely better to do your own however the advantages of the bags are possibly getting chickens that aren’t available in your area or at all times of the year when they’re not available in the stores. Thanks for the comments good luck with your chickens

I’m guessing the ones that pipped or began zipping didn’t make it because they got shrink wrapped. This is caused by the incubator being opened after they begin zipping, the loss of humidity causes the membrane to dry and the chick gets stuck, without help/ assistance they typically die. It’s important not to open the incubator whilst chicks are hatching.

Thanks for the info, I’m editing my second try now, much better results.....when do you open your incubator?
@bilalasghar1305
@bilalasghar1305 4 года назад
Part time Homestead I usually open my incubator after a couple of chicks have hatched but that’s because it’s small. I’m using the brinsea mini II advance so there’s not much room in it once chicks have hatched. But because of its small size it’s rather forgiving and the humidity climbs right back up within seconds of closing it. With the larger incubators you can leave chicks in the incubator for about 24-48 hours. Looking forward to your new video 🙂

Yeah, now I leave in up to 3 days. After first chick hatches.

@@ozarkshomesteadandfarm Interesting! I would’ve thought that you would get them out as soon as they fluff? Am I way off?
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm 3 года назад
Well it depends, The incubator I’m using holds 40 eggs they will not all hatch at the same time they will be in different stages of hatching so typically I will leave them in for three days after the first hatch and take my chances with the rest open opening the incubator will cause issues

@@ozarkshomesteadandfarm All Good. How's the E-Bay eggs hatching now? I was thinking of giving E-Bay a try.
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm
@ozarkshomesteadandfarm 3 года назад
Despite shipping and everything, the EBay eggs still have better hatch rate than mine, but that may just be my chicken issues. I get better than 50% hatch rate every time and keep in mind a good EBay seller will always toss in extra eggs. In the end nothing is better than hatching your own or easier than just buying chicks but if you can’t get what you want EBay is the way to go.

Low humidity in your incubator thats why some of chicks cannot out in the egg

@@ozarkshomesteadandfarm don't open the incubator whilst pipping! You removed 4 chick's therefore doomed the others. They can stay in there for 24 hours from absorbing the yolk. Could've had lots of maran chick's if you had waited abit longer

Wood ships are bad, see how they want to try eating chips, they need to learn to eat food first, best not not start off with chips. I have had one lady put 6 week old chicks on the wood chips they still ate them and died.

From my learning and experience, fully developed chicks dying just before they could get out is because of 2 reasons: 1) too much average humidity across the 21 days. 2)too little average humidity across the 21 days
