Saw them at a club in Cambridge Mass - Harvard area - September 1979. Amazing. My first semester at Berklee. Same basic set, beginning with SILENT FEET. Rainer Bruninghaus - on keyboards - stole the show.
That was probably "Jonathan Swift's" on Harvard Square. I saw Jan Garbarek there in 1982. Eberhard was with him. Bill Frissell and Michael DiPasqua. I saw "Colours" at The Bottom Line in NYC. 1979. The same tour you saw. I missed Jon Christensen's drumming at both shows.
Hey...Weekly Talk. I was also at that wonderful show in Harvard Square. We were in town for just a couple of days and I was record shopping next door to the club Jonathan Swift's and my wife comes in to let me know Eberhard Weber was playing that night Sept 17 1979. It was a 9:00pm show and tickets were only $ 6.00...still have my ticket.
So would I (only it was the 90s)! My ECM label infatuation started at age 19: my mother hands me a still-in-the-shrinkwrap LP copy of Pat Metheny Bright Size Life (was a b-day gift from her sis, but she says, "you can have it" Thanks, mom!). My buddy Brian and I would sit in awe listening to that trio with Jaco, knowing we'd stumbled into otherworldly musical territory. My next ECM purchase was Metheny's Watercolors, which (as you know) has Eberhard in the bass chair, and my fascination with his tidal, haunting bass style has never ceased. Just got Yellow Fields for my record store's jazz section, and lately I'm finding it difficult to locate anything better than any of Eberhard's ensembles' live sets to listen to. Cheers!
