Is the Eberlestock Terminator Pack still worth buying today even after so many excellent military/tactical packs have come to the market? This is a followup review of my thoughts concerning this pack in what I am sure is to be controversial to some.

Pros :
Tons of Room
Can be comfortable even with a heavy weight but the pack isn’t perfect in this regards and I will talk more about that in a moment.
Excellent quality.
Can Carry a TON of WEIGHT and does so well.
Durability is excellent as this pack has taken a beating over the years and continues one like it was new.
Adjustable which means that it can be tailored for shorter and taller individuals.
Ability to carry a scabbard when you need to.
Removable buttpack is great.
Cons :
Not Waterproof so you will need to plan ahead if rain is a possibility.
Large and Very Heavy. For only a 67L pack, it’s huge!
Complicated - LOTS of POCKETS
Expensive.
Sleeping bag compartment is a bit small which is surprising for how large this pack is. If you want to carry the modular sleep system for an example, it will have to be carried on the outside as it will not fit.
Because of the design of the pack and the back-panel, it has a tendency to sway side to side and that brings down the comfort rating in my opinion. While it is still comfortable the pack never really feels like it is a part of you which is truly very important….or it is for me at least. When I throw a pack on my back, I want it to become a turtle shell, not something that can move independently with the shifting of the weight. There are packs that allow for movement like the Bora from Arc’teryx that that level of movement is different than this as the Terminator feels uncontrolled where as the Bora is the opposite; very controlled.
I know that this pack is used in military circles and I know many who personally make it work for them. From a civilian/tactical standpoint, I have tested and used so many packs over the years that I can easily tell you that this isn’t my favorite and it wouldn’t be my first choice when it comes to a tactical pack. There is too much going on with this pack and it feels like no idea was turned down. In a way that is a good thing as it is feature rich but you are have to pay for those features and you have to carry them even if you aren’t going to use them.
As with all products, they are not made for everyone so my question for you all is this, is the Terminator pack made for you?
Buying Tip : Want to save some money on one of these packs, look on eBay as it is common to find these for sale for less than $250 very often.

This is a fantastic review. Honest and unbiased. And we totally respect that. We are aware of the complaints that you noted and they're accurate for the most part. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to make such good reviews and putting so much thought and time into these. The Terminator is an older, outdated model. It has already undergone a serious remodel that will release soon. I agree it is behind current models on the market. Years ago, this was state-of-the-art, but we need to continuously update everything to stay ahead of our competitors. Thanks again.

Eberlestock good form. I’ve always appreciated your gear and in my previous life I liked all of the individual compartments as well. Now my approach has changed. I would love to see your take on a modern ultralight styled pack that can still haul heavy loads and has your durability.

I just finished watching this entire review, and I got sump'in to say. With the exception of a couple of the reviewers comments, I recommend you ignore everything he said that starts with "in my opinion". I think the only thing he DIDN'T say was, "I HATE THIS PACK!". The shocker was Eberlestock replying and saying "thanks for the honest and unbiased review"! Nonsense. Here's my review, and I'll be honest, mine is "biased", because it's my opinion. I bought this pack in 2012 in the German PX on Kandahar AFB where I lived and worked for 5 years. This pack was then, and still is one of the very best packs ever made. Eberlestock ruined it by "upgrading" it, which resulted in downgraded material quality. I would put my 2012 Terminator up against anything Eberlestock is making today, and mine would take 5 times the torture. If you have the opportunity to get the 2012 model on eBay as mention in the video, be confident you'll be picking up one of the best packs money can buy. Now, was there ANYTHING I agree with in the video review? Yes. The pack is heavier than some (almost 10 lbs before you add anything). I'm 6'3", 230, so I just don't care. The plusses in this bag far outwiegh any downside to the weight. I heard a lot of complaints in the video about it not carrying "a lot" of gear. That's *partially* true, in the main compartment. However, all those other pockets he kept talking about, more than make up for it. With all the pockets and Molle straps, you'll be able to pack more than you can carry! Regarding the reviewers remarks about "sway"....I have no clue what this guy's talking about. I've never experienced sway in the pack. But then, I'm apparently bigger then the reviewer. He looks to be a pretty little guy, and maybe that makes a difference with this pack. When I put mine on (even under heavier loads), I pull all the upper and lower straps tight, synch the pack in good-and-snug, and it stays tight against my body..."like a turtle shell"! To sum it up, if you're able to get the pack model reviewed in this video (vs the newer "upgraded" downgraded crap), you'll have spent your money well, and have a pack that will last you perhaps half a lifetime. Lord knows mine traveled Afghanistan and took the additional torture of being thrown off helos and planes all over the place. It's done 100's of miles in the field, it's survived TSA and airline employees, and it still looks pretty dang new. So in my very biased "unbiased" opinion, don't let this guy at TheOutdoorGearReview sway you from getting a great pack! I LOVE this pack!!!

The great military pack shootout sounds like a fun one. The pack looks to be much bigger than its stated size. Watching you wear that pack it looks like a 100 liter size. Good review as always.

Excellent review, but I disagree about this pack being "too much". It might be too much for a 2-3 day hike in the woods, but it's not too much for a long-term survival pack when a person has to live out of it for a long time.

I noted that this is the older model terminator pack. I actually have the same model and agree 100% with all the criticisms in this video. The total space in this pack is comprised by its ability to organize smaller items. If you like specific places to put things, this may be the pack for you. For my needs, this pack is awesome. As for the tendency to sway, I believe that is the result of the the back panel on the older models not being stiff enough. When the compression straps are tightened, the suspension of the pack becomes slightly rounded. I solved this by adding the Eberlestock tall gossamer frame. this kept the suspension surface flat, preventing sway, and also stiffened the pack up on the vertical plane, improving comfort for heavy loads. I believe the newer models come with this newer and stiffer type frame sheet already installed.

Great followup Luke; I was thinking coincidentally yesterday about Eberlestock, as I own the Skycrane system. So here is my story; day before yesterday I went on an overnight trip; it is a 10 miles out and back but i could only go couple miles into trail, camp and came back next morning deciding not to go forward. My food failed me; i was not able to get a fire going and could not eat dinner other than rice that ended up burning my canteen and wasting half of it on the ground, lol, a complete failure, then the gears I was testing; Hestra Gloves failed; kept my hands frozen at night as temp went down to 28 or 30F, also had with me a Fjallraven Belt that did not do its job and was a constant nuisance as I had to be picking up my Fjallraven Vidda Pro Pants up. Anyways i will post a video of this failure overnighter but i called it next morning; going up 2000Ft of elevation for 5 miles on an extremely rocky-gravel-boulder-like terrain is not fun under those conditions, adding I am still wearing a brace on my left knee with an untreated broken ACL; I think it was brave of me to even try it. I was carrying total 32 pounds when I started going up, including 3 liters of water, as there is no water source all the way up to then a spring that trickles some water but it is not guarantee to have any, my pack was the Zpacks Arc Haul and I remember thinking part of my way up how would have been if i had chosen my Eberlestock Skycrane system? (note not the Skycrane II)...that pack at 10 pounds would have been torture! I bought it and have never used it..almost $1000 in all the options it is available for it; all new in my closet. i remember thinking it would make an awesome pack for a hunting trip but now, I don't even know if that would happen and certainly i am not taking it for just backpacking. It is unholy!

I have 3 Eberlestock bags, the quality is top notch. That said, I pointed out the “ sway “ issue years ago in a review of the Gunslinger pack. I think that if they built a line where they removed the scabbard option completely, 2/3rds of the PALS webbing, 1/2 the interior pockets, and cut the denier down to 500 at the highest wear points and other materials at low stress points then they’d have a winner for the backpacking crowd. That’d lighten up the weight considerably and with their excellent suspension set up I think people would really like it.

Well, I've had my Tasmanian Tiger for 20+ years. Its been to the Balkans, Irak, Afghanistan. Only real downside was the green color that only worked in 3 seasons in Europe. Had to paint it and ad camo in Irak/Aghanistan (the dust helped !!!), and ad camo molle pouches. Only some webbing has gone bad from cuts and heavy loads. I'm convinced the Eberlestoks are equaly durable. Great video.

Using the compression straps while having a load on there would help with the swaying, I would think. I’ve put a number of miles on this pick with 45-55lbs and I wasn’t bothered by it, however I did tighten the straps down pretty snugly before setting off each time. Your comments are all valid, to varying degrees, in my opinion. Yes, there are packs that can haul more, packs that are more comfortable, and packs that are certainly lighter, I would be willing to bet this bag would outlast them “in the field”. The reason I buy, and continue to use Eberlestock is because I know the product will not fail me, regardless of what I throw at it. I also want to applaud Eberlestock for their comment on this video, admitting that their product is now outdated, and has been redesigned. If/when I wear mine out, I’ll likely go with them again in the future!

Its a great company. I think Glen Eberle-the founder of the company- designed most of their packs. One thing weird is that they dont really listen to user feedbacks and upgrade their products unlike Maxpedition or Vanquest.

Great video. This pack was one that I consider getting. It came down to a top three the "Eberlestock Terminator, Raptor Tactical Ranger Alice Pack, and Mystery Ranch blackjack 80". I ended up going with the Blackjack 80 and love the comfort

I would love to see a top 5 pack comparison. I have the f4 terminator pack and I agree with every criticism you had. I am still looking for a good INCH style pack so durability and the ability to carry a heavy load as securely and comfortably as possible are a high priority.

Luke .... I don’t have a pack yet. Not made of money so, saving up for my perfect pack. I am about the same height as you, so fitment for me is kinda similiar to yours. I have been doing SO MUCH RESEARCH and finally set on the Terminator XL, mostly so I could pack shelter & sleeping system internally. Now I know you aren’t reviewing the XL, but You said it won’t accommodate a sleep system. I was hoping that you could recommend a better pack.

I've managed to pick up the *"Terminator F4NT XL"* Pack as issued to our Army Pers in the NZ Army, as well as the Current Issue MCU Kit. Wet Weathers, Smock, Boonie Hat, Under Armour Shirt etc for a pretty cheap price from a guy down by Linton Army Camp in Manawatu. Pack only cost me $120 which is fantastic, considering the Current Issue Kit (Civilians can't buy it) I have is near brand new for the cheap price I've paid for what I have so far. 👍🇳🇿

I don't have that particular pack, but as I said the big ole packs fit a purpose. My feelings on backpacks is that you really have to have several unless you are simply planning on singular use. For instance if you are in a bug out survival situation you would want a big pack to haul all you need to survive, where as if you are simply doing a weekend camping trip these big ole packs are overkill. I have a couple day pack that gets far more use than my big ole "bug out pack" But my bug out pack is packed and ready for that situation when it comes. And you touched on a very important thing, everyone should train themselves on where things are located in their bug out pack, it will not do a lot of good to you in a stressful situation if you don't know where you are keeping the things you need. Can't wait for that other snowstorm overnight you teased us with :-) Always love your videos bro, I don't think it's possible for you to make a bad video. They are always top notch.

a great vid, as always, and v comprehensive. I understand all the negos that u point out... and agree that those negos may be applicable to people with a certain frame type/size. I am 6', 230 lbs and u would have to pry this pack out of my cold dead hands. For me, this is the perfect pack... and yes, l like the numerous pockets, pouches and sleeves. I carry alot of gear and everything has it's own designated place - love it! If l could change one thing, maybe, or maybe not, l would lighten it 2 - 3 lbs but, l would not want to lose and pockets, pouches, sleeves or cubic inches etc. To me, the 10 lb weight is not actually a consideration bkz of my frame size and weight. I have this pack, and additional molle on pouches in Unicam and l use it, and love it, for med and hv load outs. Personally, l love this pack. It is my "go to tank"! If u have other packs that u prefer and are similar, please do a vid and/or give links. Tks again 4 the great vid!

I have this back and I agree with you about the sway and lack of space. This pack is very deceptive. The pontoons or side pouches are great for tarps. I bought this because I got a good deal and it does hold part of the sleep system. and I put my tent in one of the side pontoons. I have transitioned this into my hunting pack and have since began yet another search for a grab and go weekend get away camping pack. I would like to see this compared to the other military packs such as the ilbe and filbe pack. I have the molle ii pack as well which was my first and I hated it. this pack was an upgrade. I would like to see a review of the Vanquest MArkhor 45 which looks to have more usable space than this pack and is smaller.

I have this pack along with the v69 destroyer and other backpacking brands like mystery and kelty. This pack is not a typical hiking pack. I would refer to it as a specialty pack designed to tailored technical needs. It has a ton of versatility and organization. It is heavy but durable. I would recommend thicker padding for sure. This design has its place. This thing can carry three hydration bladders and all kind of tools, multiple nerf blasters 😃, communication equipment, medical supplies etc etc. I would finish by saying yes some sway but load placement and compression straps can help with that. They could create two variant models off of this with different organizational layouts. It is truly a Swiss knife of packs.

Haha so a couple three years ago I ran across Eberlestock packs while looking for a good bugout bag, plus I have never done overnight hiking but love the idea of it. I saw the Terminator online I was like..."whoah..." I then saw the Eberlestock Battleship pack then I was like "Whoooooah." I saw your battleship review and I was trying to build the ultimate long term bugout bag. I was so gun ho on prepping I WENT AND BOUGHT THE BATTLESHIP LOLZ! I haven't taken it hiking or anything yet but I am ready to bug out definitely haha. I was thinking it would make a great overnight hiking pack, however after you now doing a follow up review on just the Terminator pack, I can't help but sit here and laugh at myself. I have a $429.00 bugout bag that I am wondering if it is even the best option for that as far as weight transfer.

For same amount of money, Battleship is a smart choice if you want to carry a heavy load with comfort. Its an alpine style pack. Check out my vids.

This bag is an expeditionary type ruck, and isn't made for comfort. it's made for folks who have to move a large amount of gear to a base camp, F.O.B., etc. It's not for the average guy or girl for camping or pushing up the A.T. We all need to evaluate our needs and buy accordingly. I don't own one.

EX MARINE: please read thank you. hey so i watched ur vid thanku so much cuz im currently purchasing this brand of packs. i just ordered the main frame pack which is just an external frame that u can add to and modify anything. and this terminator pack was a question in my mind and cuz it is expensive at 429$ i want to make smart purchases. everything you pointed out i could see for my self in ur video and it makes complete sense. i dont mind pockets but at 67 liters which is tiny for me its a very large pack and i HATE when a pack sways back and forth. i am a HUGE lover of external frame packs. i bought the usmc FILBE pack and i returned it cuz it sways and does not carry weight well at all. im not a big fan of many internal frame packs due to how u have to bend over when walking and carrying them and they make me sweat horribly losing valuable water in my body. im a military pack lover. im an ex marine from way long ago and i will always buy military cuz u get absolute durability and molle webbing and i love the military look and dislike how hiker packs look with colors and thinner fabrics. i dont mind weight at all. i prefer heavier packs cuz i know their quality and bomb proof so to speak they hold up!! and thats all i care about. i find the molle large rucksacks external frame to be my favorite packs of all time. nothing carrries weight better then those larrge rucksacks molle. they have a square frame on the outside that makes that heavy weight so supported right and no sway and their just locked down to ur back but allowing u to walk upright and good ventilation. and with all military packs you can just keep adding ur own system of pouches and bags and i always carry my sleeping system on the outside ayways. but this video about the terminator showed so much. i am concerned about the eberlestock back pack im getting cuz from their pictures the shoulder straps and hip belts look like u said bare bones and very thin...im nervous about that cuz it is a hugely loved company but all their straps are so thin on the shoulders and hip belts...will it be comfortable???...i dont know.alot of people love this company and their packs are very visually stunning and awesome to look at. this terminator is a no go for me. does this comapny have other packs that dont sway, packs on the larger side?? i love my huge packs and i like 110 liters on my back with a very durable 1000d nylon codura fabric if i can get it. hmm if u can offer any help i would be grateful. i know this is a long message but i felt like writing it thank you for ur time!!!

Its 100L, internal aluminium frame-marries with my back perfectly, great for load hauling, works great on mountain terrain cause its alpine style pack with tactical features. 100% agree with your opionions on backpacks. MOLLE2 is better for load hauling but FILBE is also great cause its very modular and versitile but like you said the frame is weaker and uncomfortable for heavy loads. I think ILBE is the best military issued pack so far.

I think the pack designed for hunting? I d recommend you to get V90 Battleship or V69 Destroyer. They are more like alpine backpacking style packs with military specs.

As a past guide, the extra pockets would be great for organizational needs. That said, for fishing rods or rifles it might be fine. I agree though as a short frame (18) it would not be my first choice.

I never thought i would use the top lid as a fanny pack until i started taking my young children for bike rides and short hikes. I can fit their two water bottles, my wallet and phone and keys and snacks ih there. I find it very useful

Gary Goertz is right: most of american packs are umbelievably expensive. In Europe you can find good alternatives at half a price. For example the "Rajajääkäri" by Savotta or the "Col Moschin 45 liters" or the "Tuscania 60 liters" by Ferrino. These are nice jumpable, IRR, combat proven medium size packs. Ferrino has its production facilities in Italy only and is one of the official suppliers of the Italian Army.

Maybe a little late to this party, but I did just recently get this pack for myself, after considering a number of options. I was specifically looking for a large military style pack that I could use more as like a base camp/follow-on pack. I am ex-military myself, so I appreciated certain design aspects likely more than some others would, namely the firing platform off the bag etc. I haven't taken it on any long range adventures yet, so I can't comment on that yet, and my usual loadout for this pack is around 40lbs. so nothing crazy. I've had a number of packs, and while I won't say this one is my favorite, it is by far better than anything the army ever issued me! Last comment, in regards to the issue of water/lack of waterproofness; never count on your pack keeping your kit dry! No matter what kind of pack you have! I am a firm believer in dry sacks and Ziplock Freezer bags! I live on the "wet coast" of Canada, and I haven't had any issues with wet gear yet. I think there are a lot of highlights to this bag that this review doesn't necessarily cover, but those may be in the more detailed review that you did of the pack. That being said, based on this video alone I likely would not have bought this pack, which would have been my loss I guess because although I've only had a it a short time, it has served me very well.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on the 5.11 Rush 100. Looking for a 60l+ pack for longer excursions. My only complaint was that it didn't have a ton of internal organization options. Something like the Vanquest Markhor 45 does extremely well.

Luke, with you vast experience and unique perspective, I don’t think that I would be alone in saying...I think it’s time for some Top 5 or Favorite videos. Or something like “ your wife said” you could only keep 1 setup (shelter, pack & bag) for 5 different scenarios like: Summer and/or lightweight. Winter and/or Heavyweight etc... I think these videos would be highly valued and fun to watch, especially if we could see you going through the decision making process. Lol

The only drawback I found was the base weight. But with materials used at the time that was to be expected. It was able to take a 70 pounds load no problem. Usually had a radio, camo net system including poles and spreaders, 2 water bladders and food for three days. As long as everything was cinched down, away was not a problem.

I had the G4 Operator pack which is similar. Hit the nail on the head, too many pockets. The extra pockets and features add weight. I never used the scabbard, you had to loosen the compression straps to get the gun out. One annoying thing with some of the pockets is that you will loose room in one pocket by filling another pocket to the max....oh and it has molle on it, so you can add more pockets.

I love my F4 terminator. I love all the pockets. I have not attached additional pouches. I did buy the Terminator because it gives me a location to carry my rifle, admittedly I have not carried my rifle with me (more like an emergency bugout scenario). I am the type of person that has a place for everything. I know where everything goes and where to find it. The sleeping bag compartment is just fine for me. I can carry my 0 degree down mummy bag and liner just fine down there (and the inflatable pillow). My Nemo insulated air mattress is stored in the main compartment. I did notice the sway, but I figured that was due to the extra height from the attached fanny pack that acts as an additional storage compartment. I normally leave the fanny pack at home and strap my tent directly to the top. Maybe the sway is worse when the fanny pack is not strapped tightly?

1. Get your hands on some Mystery Ranch packs. I would love to see your reviews of them. 2. Waterproof - unless you want to waste your money on the undersized "waterproof" bags, just utilize some of the large trash bags meant to hold yard debris as they are tough and offer more than enough space for all your gear. They can be sealed in many ways from straps to velcro, or rubber bands to make them water proof.

I believe this pack was designed for the special operations purpose where design requirements are very different from civilian needs. This is not a “pack everything” light weight camping backpack. This is a built for special ops guys going down range.

Have you ever thought in terms of building a custom pack by combining parts and pieces of different packs. For example, the harness system of one pack removed and replace the harness of another pack. I been thinking of building my own pack in this manner. I expect there will be sewing, I been talking to quilt makers and saddle makers, getting ideas. It would be interesting to see what you put together pulling parts and pieces for your own custom concept. I have a German flektarn rucksack, love the pack/hate the harness shoulder straps.

If I'm going to go with a large rucksack. I'd probably go with the destroyer. For a large military ruck, fitting the modular sleep system is a must in my opinion. Currently debating upgrading my ACU large rucksack with the destroyer

I don't mind the bag, with all those pouches I would just ditch some of the organizer bags. Being able to carry firearms and having the shooting platform are definitely great for hunting. Also I would be very interested in your opinion of what the "best" overall bags would be. I am currently looking into investing in a good bag, preferably of the military style, and want to get something that's both comfortable for long distance, heavy carries, and durable, hearing your opinion would be great in helping decide which way I might lean. So far the Sarma TST RP80 Recon is looking like a good bet.

What are these other packs? I'm feeling a little led on. looking for a longer term bugout and I've gotten no where with your admittedly great reviews... help a guy out. I'm looking for 80L... I want to be able to carry 120+ lbs but obviously I won't be most of the time. What backpack is best for moving with you? i've heard Mystery Ranch... which one? Have you checked out the Kelty Falcon 66 (Kelty Tactical Falcon 4000) ? Its basically the same bag, without all those outside pockets. It has the lid that is a fanny pack. All the straps are very padded. Comes with a nice rain-fly, etc. It sounds like it could be what your wanting. Its also my pack as well, and i very much dig it.

For exactly the same price, you can go for V90 Battleship Pack. More volume, more heavy loading capacity, more padding..I think the Terminator pack is designed for military personnel especially who are in sniper units. For long gun users, it would be great.

I'm not interested in pockets everywhere, that's when your stuck measuring everything so the weight is balanced. I'm using my old medium sized Canadian Army bag but with only 2 inside sections plus a hydration section with a kneeling pad. All my essentials are in coloured dry bags for easy identification of items. I don't use it much anymore since I'm in a wheelchair now. If you want to review it I'll send it to you minus my coloured dry bags of course. I'm going to just get a dry bag backpack for my groceries etc. Let me know if you're interested, Still in excellent condition except for faded plastic buckles....It's strong enough for 24 cans of beer with ice too. lol 🍺🍺🍺

The Battelship V90 is more my style, that or a ilbe surplus pack. In any case I'd go used. Eberlestock stuff is just too pricey for my budget but they do make excellent gear if you can afford it. 👍👍👍

I don't own this pack, but it doesn't look too bad if you are someone who might go out on solo hunting/camping trips. I have a Savotta Jaakari L rucksack, which usually has plenty of capacity for everything I need to take with me spring-fall if the temperature stays above 30F.

I have been doing research on the perfect eberleestock backpack for multi day camping. I want to be sure it fits my snugpak scorpion 3/ops expedition sleeping bag. Snugpak inflatable mat pillow and all my other gear for camping. I also make videos so i want to be able to fit my camera gear and accessories. Would also like to fit my rifle. What packs would fit all this gear? I was looking at the rocky mountain elk pak...was also thinking about the frame/2 batwings and dry bag. Is the terminator v2 any better? Any help from anyone expierenced with these packs would be greatly appreciated!

They will do Luke, Staked 3 packs high in the T.C.V. They will look neat and tidy. Later to be Carried, Draged, Or Droped over or under, but it's easyer to go around a great big bloudy wall, With the complements of the Staff stg and his stores. Things must be kept neat and tidy for this bloudy war.

Had a long rebuttal intended as the new version is a vast improvement, but anyway. Like I said, the new F4 version is so much improved over the one in this video. Took out a couple pounds, same capacity, sway has been addressed, and can handle a full load out for active personnel. I highly recommend the new version, obviously.
