A big reason why the Airships have never been used in warfare and particularly agains each other is because they're all created for and piloted by House Lyrandar, sure they're hired out for scouting etc but Lyrandar does not permit their expensive investements used for direct warfighting ESPECIALLY against Airships hired out to opposing forces.

It would be like asking why, in the Dune universe, the great houses don't do space battles in warships. They don't because the ships - and the warp travel they facilitate - are controlled by the Navigators and their monopoly.

@Nipha Ahtlantashah in the current edition, they need to be controlled by someone with the Mark of Storm or the ability to control elementals (but Mark of Storm works better)
@christophercheck1590
@christophercheck1590 3 года назад
Yeah, EARLY ON Lyrandar had that monopoly, but as the tech got older, Wizards with Control Weather, or renegade wielders of the Mark of Storm who aren't in with Lyrandar If you're a pirate and you can get someone like that on your crew, that's a hell of a boon. I love the idea of Lyrandar still holding on to (or trying to hold on to) their old monopoly, impotently attempting to enforce regulations on who can control those airships.

I read on Keith Baker's blog that firearms aren't included due to question "why would people use gunpowder, when magic is readily available?" Magic is the basis of the world. Airships fly because of magic. Trains drive because of magic. Magic assists artisans in creating goods. Cannons shoot fireballs and lightning bolts. Gunpowder just seems arbitrary in a world like that. .
@cjwill08
@cjwill08 4 года назад
I always rationalized firearms in Eberron like this: It takes a combination of effort, talent, and/or luck to become a spellcaster. While a firearm will never be as powerful as spells, it is easier and quicker to train and arm riflemen then a squad of wandslingers.
@whiskeyhound
@whiskeyhound 4 года назад
Yeah, gunpowder is redundant in a world where artificers can create stuff like thunder cannons and walking turrets, it seems pretty odd that none of that technology really seems to be in use by regular people.

"What part of [the Warforged] is organic?" I always wondered why people do not see this? Look at all the official art for the warforged. Yes, they have these external metal or stone plates on their bodies. But they are very clearly made from bands of wood that are organized like muscle and have the flexibility of living plant. Their organic composition has always been on display for everyone to see.

@@TheGentlemanDuelist Yeah. I mean, they are described in a 2008 issue of Dragon magazine as having a sap that flows through their bodies like blood, and also describes them having organ-like structures in their bodies. Warforged are not, and never have been, living golems. They are not sculptures brought to life. They are a magically created organic race with an artificial hide made from stone or metal, with very detailed inner workings. Even the original Eberron capaign setting allowed Warforged to be healed by normal healing magic. Although they could also be healed by Repair spells and the like. And Eberron's guide to races even says the Warforged are constructs but not machines. A lot of folk WANT them to be D&D robots, but they just aren't, at least not as written.

On Dragonmarks, I was disappointed the book didn't spell out something that Keith Baker points out on his blog that all other editions of Eberron didn't really do a good job of emphasizing: the biggest magical advantage of having a dragonmark is getting to use dragonshard focus items. Those items are the real basis of the magical industrial economy.

I'm currently running a campaign with this book. It's my third campaign in Eberron and this time around I chose to use the Daelkyr. Dyrnn and Belashyra will be some of the endgame bosses which will take you into kyhber to places like the Citidel of Lidelss eyes as the Daelkyr take advantage of the aftermath of the war to raise the overlords I have sealed underneath the mournland. I started the players in Sharn and the party used Clan Boromar as a group patron. As for crafting with the artificer, I've been letting artificers collect rare metal like adamantine so they can make armor for the party that makes them immune to crits at the cost of time and money and materials. Anyway the last session Sharn was attacked by mindflayers who appeared in ships similar to the ones in the new baulders gate trailer. A dozen or so ships attacked Sharn and dropped abberatiom throughout the city. The party saw a ship approach the Tradefair District where I placed the Clan Boromar main hall. The party got to the ship attacking the Tradefair District and killed two mindflayers that came out of the shio and after killing them dyrnn himself with two mindflayers came out of the ship and corrupted the minds of the party, imprisoned them and now they are in an Elder Brain lair. That's where we'll start next session

Tools: Broadcast Equipment, Land Vehicle Languages: Your choice of any 2 languages. Equipment: Recorder, Camera (Photo or Video), Scholar’s Pack, Cell Phone Feature: I’ve got a lead! You've cultivated sources at nearly every level of society. You have multiple confidential informants who trust you and can provide you with information pertinent to your investigation, should you make it worth their while. *Pundit* Skill Proficiencies: Deception and Performance. Tools: Broadcast Equipment, Disguise Kit Languages: None Equipment: Disguise Kit, Camera (Video), Fine Clothes, Feature: I’m simply asking questions. While conducting an interview you know just which questions to ask to get the “truth” you want out of your subject. Make a Charisma Deception or Performance check while speaking with a creature in front of an audience. The DC equals 10 + the creature’s Charisma modifier. The design goal for the artificer class was said by Crawford to be that each subclass of artificer would be representative as an integral part of the creation of the warforged. The archivist was supposed to be the representation of the mind that gave the warforged its ability to think and learn. It’s a shame that the survey went badly for it. The homunculus being taken away from the alchemist left a hole in the bonus action that each subclass was originally designed to do. Should be able to make an elixir as a bonus action and use it as an action at least. Or make an elixir and use it as a bonus action. I also think there should have been an offensive experimental elixir that represents knowledge gained from caustic or fiery mistakes.

One of the most powerful aspects of the artificer is the fact it can attune to 6 magical items. Curious if it's because many DM's struggle to balance with in the game. I found implementing a proper cover system and making sure my players know that death is far more tooth and nail because if you can head shot an enemy, they're certainly able to return the favour made the game much more interesting. It has made higher levels of play at my table far more risky, just like it is when you start at 1st level. I mean if you've ever played Warhammer and played Clan Skyre with the Skaven, you can certainly turn those firearms into dangerous weapons of alchemy gone wrong (and my players are very inventive on that score!)

I know the origins of the creation and afterlife of warforged are shrowded in mystery, but I think their core, their kernel of sentience, is alligned to the positive plane and when healing magic is used, it is funneled through that connection and translated into what the physical manifestation needs. Basically I see the whole Warforged/construct thing as not just an ease of play but also balance issue. Warforged are already immune to poison and don't have to eat or breathe. Those are huge advantages already that many adventurers don't get. If Warforged couldn't be healed by normal Cure Wounds or potions, you would need a spell caster to take Mending which is what Artificers use to heal their constructs. So Warforged would basically need a second healer in the party just to handle them if normal healing didn't work on them.

for healing warforged, couldnt one use mending? Even though its a cantrip, if you were allowed to cast it at the same level spell as cure wounds, the cost would seem equal/fair, imho.(created a warforged cleric, he can heal himself with cure light wounds by touch, but wanted to scale spell slot mending for flavor, yet remain on an even keel)

Is Jury-Rig a spell in 5E? That could also patch up a living construct. And, mending being a healing cantrip could have a shortcoming in reducing the Warforged's dex or something as mending could stiffen their joints somewhat, similar to splinting or binding an injury. If mending cured 1d6 but did half of that as dex damage, I think that'd be balanced and would prevent abuse.

For non spell casting dragonmark characters there is a simple fix. They can use the spells granted by their dragonmark a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus and they regain these uses on a long rest. Hell, this is probably a good fix for any race that gives one use of one or two spells per day.
@whiskeyhound

I've also seen the idea that they can cast those spells as rituals, which seems like a pretty good way of explaining why the dragonmarked houses are so valuable, since unlike any regular spellcaster they can reliably do what they do all day long at the cost of it taking a while to do.

In Keith Baker's set of novels the dreaming dark trilogy the artificer in that comments how their warforged has organic material similar to tree limbs and vines that function as muscles and organs for a warforge.

In the Eberron game I run for my family there are a full range of airships not just the dinky standard type talked about in the official books. Their party is currently tooling around in a ship that is the elemental airship equeilent of a cross between the Millennium Falcon and a Firefly class ship. I have created an entire catalog of airships that exist in the world from small dingy sized ships that anyone can drive all the way up to supercarriers with wings of griffin riders that take a whole team of those possessing the Mark of Storm to pilot! I have mostly just used the old Spelljammer rules for ship combat with just a few modifications and it is working amazingly! P.S. We also use the resonance black powder equipment in the DMG.

I do love the way wizards and the creators wrote this 5e book. My campaign is now going on it’s 11th month and I still don’t feel like I’ve even arrived at the good stuff! I ran my first story arc in Q’barra and we just moved onto the talenta plains in the second arc. We are ultimately facing against the overlord of winter and the fear within. Which is what I finally landed on for my 5th version of writing this campaign haha.

I found a homebrew map of Khorvaire that slaps an inland sea in the middle of the map and it just changes so much about not just the countries but how the war was fought. Suddenly the rivalry between Thrane and Karnnath becomes more intense as they are competing for control of the trade routes in the scions sea

I agree a nice lore book with tons of info. I think they messed up a bit in both artificer and warforged and a lot on the dragon mark. Just let the marks be cantrips or 1-3 lv spells.... why didn’t they? Overall the book is worth the money to me. Also I loved the old times newspaper articles also read them in the old radio voice.

Great episode. I've loved Eberron for years and it was one of the only reasons I've considered running a 3.5 game again. I agree that it was a little disappointing there weren't any example backgrounds. I'm wondering if Jim and Pruitt have ever played Primeval World of Thule. It seems like something they'd dig.

I run warforged as necromantic creations. The body is built, but integrated somewhere in each one are say, bones, or teeth, hair, the remains of a creature as an anchor, and the magic that animates them is necromantic. That's how I justify the "creature" overlap.

About warforged healing; the battle smith basically can "heal" their steel defender with the mending spell, I'd suggest warforged would work the same way. I think that would be suitable substitute for traditional healing spells. That or as you mentioned use a skill for repairing them maybe a raw Int check or maybe knowledge arcane. From personal experience there are a lot of things you can safely do to repair machinery without tools so I'd allow it but I would definitely give a bonus for using smithing/woodworking tools
@mlp_firewind8129

I feel like healing spells working on warforged is when the game part takes precedent over the role playing part. There are plenty of players who would find not being able to be healed disqualifying. Making them constructs has a lot of other implications, and having like a page dedicated to the exceptions for healing seems clunky, or at least had the potential to be very clunky.
@bruggeman672
@bruggeman672 3 года назад
I would play the warforged healing issue as the magic is healing the spirit or soul that inhabits the machinery and makes it sentient/sapient.... that is why it won't work on ur sword...

Eberron is really one of the best settings ever made, for any roleplaying game. It's a shame, that the much more generic (although fun, don't get me wrong) Forgotten Realms gets all the attention. I'd love to have more games in the Eberron Setting like Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's an old game, but I can only advise everyone and anyone to check it out to get some Eberron flavor.

Keith Baker said that they don't have Firearms in Eberron because they have magic to do that, they never needed to invent then because they CAN just give everyone wands. Early firearms were unreliable as fuck when compared to bows and arrows, they just required less strength to use. A wand requires no strength to use and doesn't suffer from incredibly shit accuracy, blinding smoke filling the battlefield, and giving everyone tinnitus.

I use the old Dragonmark UA when I run Eberron games. The Dragonmarks as subraces isn't the only way to get a Dragonmark. Also, you don't need spellcasting to use the spells given, but they still add to your list.

Hey Jim, I think you may have missed a bit from ERFTLW as you can cast spells with you Dragonmark without the class feature, it's just a once per day thing, it's just that caster get an expanded spell list. They are listed in the individual marks.
