Unboxing a motor and wheel replacement for the Ride1Up Café Cruiser electric bike. My Café Cruiser was 13 months old with 2800 miles on it before the gears inside the rear hub motor failed. The motor emits a grinding noise and puts no power to the rear wheel. After contacting Ride1Up support, they referred me to a rear wheel and motor replacement assembly that I could purchase on their website. I'm not really surprised this issue came up as the Café Cruiser has a very compact and thin rear hub motor compared to other beefier 750 watt electric bikes. I also own a Gosen S5 e-bike with a Bafang 750W rear hub motor and same size battery (48V 15Ah), and the motor is twice as wide and produces far more torque. It feels far more robust and durable than the Ride1Up motor. Unfortunately I don't think the Café Cruiser was built with longevity in mind, which is why the replacement wheel and motor assembly is offered.

I plan on taking the old rear hub motor apart to see if I'm able to repair the nylon gears. With any luck it won't be too difficult, and afterwards I'll have a spare wheel and motor for future issues. The replacement assembly only comes with a motor, pre-built rim, spokes, hardware, and freehub body. It will require re-use of the cassette, axle nuts, disc rotor, torque spacers, spacers, tire, rim tape, and tube from the old wheel. So it won't be a quick and simple replacement, but they do provide some video tutorials to help out with the process, which you can check out below.

Overall I'm disappointed to have the issue only one month past the expiration of the one year warranty. I would have expected far more mileage out of the motor before having this type of issue. Since I'm already heavily invested into the Café Cruiser with an extra battery, and numerous Ride1Up accessories, I don't really have much choice but to pay for the replacement and hope I can install it without further expense. If I didn't fix it, the Café Cruiser and everything else I bought would be be around a $2300 loss for me, as without power it's a useless brick.
